Indie-folk outfit Book Club share their latest single “Space Between the Days” at PopMatters

book club atlanta dust of morning

As much as Book Club’s lineup has shifted and evolved over the years, at its center has always stood guitarist, singer, and songwriter Robbie Horlick. In the ironic social landscape that mainstream “folk” now resides in, much of what represents the genre on the radio today feels more like pretentious pop-rock than anything else. With Horlick at the head, however, the multi-faceted frontman has kept the band humble and, thankfully enough, utterly folk throughout all of Book Club’s renditions. There may be a contemporary twist here or there that carries the music along, to be certain. Yet, this is more along the lines of Cash meeting Ledbetter than Led Zeppelin meeting a banjo.

“Space Between the Days” soaks itself in Atlanta sunshine, instantaneously evocative of the sort of rural landscape that Horlick has been invoking into Book Club’s songs since the beginning. It comes easy, with his plaintive trademark vocals carrying a certain wistfulness that, when paired with the song’s piano, cello, violin, guitar, and drums, makes it feel like a bonafide windswept number in a string band’s set. Accentuating the tune with her own gorgeous vocals, Lauren Love sings alongside Horlick as they paint this Americana-marked picture together. READ MORE…

Indie-pop duo Tiger March share new single “Either Or” at PopMatters

Tiger March‘s debut LP Hold Something may be destined to be one of the key synthpop/chillwave records of the year with sounds that summon fond memories of the Psychedelic Furs, Simple Minds and others that populated the soundtracks accompanying John Hughes films from the era. Albeit with a little more grit and darkness.

On the single, “Either Or”, husband and wife duo Matthew and Annie Gleason breeze their way through a romantic splash that’s undeniably infectious and sweetly memorable. With Annie’s laser-focused lyrics and vocals and Matthew’s shoegaze inspired instrumentation, it’s a number that makes you yearn for the endless nights that new love brings. READ MORE…

PopMatters premieres “Garage Sale” by Pedigo’s Magic Pilsner

Pedigo’s Magic Pilsner is a lot of things. For starters, it’s Dallas songwriter John Pedigo’s latest project. Secondly, it’s a lush, rhythmic Americana movement that’s all about having hope and keeping your chin up in the face of adversity. Thirdly, it’s a personal affair for Pedigo, given that in its own way, the project was made to honor his father.

Pedigo lost his dad to terminal cancer in May of last year. When he was diagnosed in 2016, his son set forth to write and record a collection of tunes that would honor him. Pedigo does so with keeping optimism alive even in the face of loss and mourning, with bombastic horns, drums, and guitars driving his rich, exuberant world of roots performances under the “Magic Pilsner” moniker forward. Even the name of the project, speaking of it, was named after an unbearable brew that John Pedigo’s father had created once upon a time.

“Garage Sale” is the good old Magic Pilsner’s latest release, and it carries much of the idea of making the best of a sad situation as one might expect from reading the above. But, instead of this writer lingering on analyzing the tune by his lonesome, John Pedigo himself took part in a Q&A; that should shine a light on things.

What is “Garage Sale” about / inspired by?

I think when people break up and chunk the other person’s things out on the lawn, it’s not only lazy, but a missed opportunity. Not to mention, it makes all your neighbors embarrassed for you, which makes borrowing milk just plain awkward. A better idea is to take all those things you’d be tossing out the window in a blind rage, and calmly selling them in a garage sale. It’s a no-brainer. You make some cash off the ex’s possessions, then go buy you and your friends some margaritas. Who wins? You do. All the way to the bank.

Any fun stories about writing or recording this particular track?

Besides the raison d’être and the motivation for actually making this record, I was extremely fortunate to have incredible players to work with. This song in particular took its unequivocal shape when Danny Balis was tracking. His walking bass line led to Chad Stockslager’s haunting piano part which led to Chris Holt’s doubled slide guitar. I added the Pixies-esque guitar part in the chorus to add some pep to it, but really it was those guys that made song special. Getting to hang with them and let them have at it was the fun I got to have with it.

How’s 2018 treating you so far? What are you looking forward to this year?

I know I’m not alone when I say that 2017 wasn’t the …

Wait, full disclosure, I wanted to say ‘bees knees’ just then. Which is ridiculous. However, I just Googled “Other ways to say Bees Knees.” Yes, even more ridiculous. But even more ridiculous still were these gems that came up in the search: “elephant’s adenoids, cat’s meow, ant’s pants, tiger’s spots, bullfrog’s beard, elephant’s instep, caterpillar’s kimono, turtle’s neck, duck’s quack, duck’s nuts, monkey’s eyebrows, gnat’s elbows, oyster’s earrings, snake’s hips, kipper’s knickers, elephant’s manicure, clam’s garter, eel’s ankle.” No joke!

Anyway, last year wasn’t the “kipper’s knickers” so to speak. I’m really looking forward to getting this record out and hitting the road with the Pils and making things happen. I owe it to my Dad. I’m also looking forward to working on my bowling game. It’s been slipping since, like, forever.

PopMatters Premieres New Video from Kat Myers & the Buzzards for ‘Reluctant Love’

Kat Myers & The Buzzards

It’s been a whirlwind past few years for Kat Myers. Just five years ago, you could’ve thought that the Buzzards’ frontwoman was living the dream between a steady job, steady relationship, and a steady place to live out amongst the throngs of New York City. Yet, she just wasn’t happy.

Rather than stick around, she “realized that you don’t have to do what your parents think you should do; that there are other paths”, took a transformative trip to Southeast Asia after leaving her past behind, and wound up in Los Angeles. Now, she’s a full-time musician following her dreams, right at the precipice of releasing a debut album.

Ahead of the upcoming EP, Kat Myers & the Buzzards are releasing a music video for their single, “Reluctant Love”. The rolling Americana tune is driven forward by Myers’ soulful alto, carrying the song with a particular vocal yearning for the greater sense of awareness in the modern world that it’s lyrically centered around.

The video, directed by Thomas Smith, keeps the selling point of the song going as it follows an individual’s struggles — and eventual success — at finding a meaningful connection in a wired world full of distraction.

“I feel that nowadays, people have a much harder time committing to things than they once did. Whether it be a relationship or just meeting a friend for coffee,” says Kat Myers. “People seem to be more self-involved than ever and many times prefer the company of their phone and computer over a human being. The song isn’t necessarily about love, it’s about all types of relationships and being present.”

PopMatters Premieres New Track from Derek Hoke, “Destination Unknown”

Derek Hoke

For the last seven years, Derek Hoke has found himself as the host of $2 Tuesdays at the 5 Spot in Nashville. There, he’s hosted the likes of artists like Shovels & Rope, Nikki Lane, Margo Price, and many others.

A consummate singer-songwriter in his own right, Hoke has been putting out albums since 2009. It wasn’t until more recently that his blend of roots stylings began to bubble towards the top alongside his contemporaries.

He found considerable acclaim in the Americana world for the release of his third LP, Southern Moon, in 2016. His fourth record, Bring the Flood, is coming out on 13 October via Little Hollywood. With it comes a total change of pace for the Georgia-born troubadour.

While he’s still blending styles as far-ranging as rock, country, gospel, and many iterations of blues on his latest, Hoke is also taking a considerably darker turn in regards to his LP’s conceptualization this go-around. Inspired by the current dark political climate, his heartland sound has become a bit more brooding and to-the-point.

With all of that said, his latest single, “Destination Unknown”, feels like a hopeful spark. Inspired by a night on the road, it offers a soothing inspiration amidst the heaviness that Hoke mentions as a driving force behind Bring the Flood’s creation.

Of “Destination Unknown”, Hoke says, “One the most inspirational places for me to write a song is while driving in my car. Pre-dawn. No radio on. Just driving. Usually west of Nashville. No particular place in mind. Hit an intersection and flip a coin. What’s down this road? Don’t know…yet.”

PopMatters premieres Fred Wickham’s new single, “Rock Bottom”

Reminiscent of the rambling of folk and country legends like Dylan and Cash, Fred Wickham‘s “Rock Bottom” is a modern bard’s sardonic tale of twists and turns for the worst. It’s all stapled together by the final utterance of its chorus: “You might think you’ve hit rock bottom, but you’ve got a long way to go.”

Despite its cynic’s worldview, the makeup of the song itself feels decidedly upbeat. Wickham’s world-worn perception of the scene his lyrics are painting is adequately met by maundering, folksy vocals. Otherwise, the instrumentation is jaunty, featuring both brass and organ-produced synth that brings more of a playful, sarcastic overtone to the ongoing events laid out in the song.

Wickham’s Mariosa Delta releases on September 29th. READ MORE…
