“The River” is a euphoric tribute to adolescent joys, soaked in nostalgia and buoyant melodies. The band captures the hills and valleys of memory, beginning the track as an easygoing sun-lit reflection, carried by breezy acoustics and ringing slide guitar. As the track winds onward, it builds to a vibrant high, calling forth memories of unbridled teenage mania amidst sweet harmonies and colorful brass hooks. Red Rum Club deliver a perfect track for the waning days of summer, inviting you to find your own joy in the haze of soaring trumpets and teenage memory.

Times Argus reviews Maple Run Band’s sophomore album, Used to Be the Next Big Thing (out 11/18)

Following on the heels of its first self-titled CD, which we liked because of the quality of the songwriting and the simplicity of the production, Maple Run Band’s second album, the 10-track Used to Be the Next Big Thing ups its game a notch.

The elements that made its freshman effort successful are here in terms of the songwriting by band leader and vocalist Trevor Crist. Crist knows how to turn a phrase and populate his songs with people who aren’t cardboard statues. His protagonists may not always come out on top, but they do seem to have more to them than some characters in song who aren’t more than words on a page.

“A brooding and dark tune that explores the dynamics and delicate issues of mental illness building masks, and the joke of the American Dream. LUNA’s sing-song slam-poet rap style seamlessly blends with the beat as he lyrically confesses his metamorphosis from the nice boy you knew growing up to the catalyst for the Apocalypse.”

Buzzbands L.A. spotlights Sonja Midtune on new Ears Wide Open feature, noting, “[Midtune] blossoms in silken hues after shelving sadcore as the basis of her writing.”

For her second EP, “Golden Girl,” she partnered with Sean Oakley (Frank Ocean, Georgia, CHAMPS, La Roux) for production and programming to bump the bpm a few notches up while she layered electric and acoustic guitars and synths. With Michael Champion (CHAMPS) and Mikey Wagner (Andrew McMahon) on bass, and mastering by Rupert Stansall, the result is an immersive, technicolor ride through the depths and highs of redemption.

RIFF includes Sonja Midtune’s new single “Haunt You Back” on their new music weekly roundup

Sonja Midtune, “Haunt You Back” – Sonja Midtune blew up on TikTok recently with her song “Pretty Please,” but doesn’t consider herself a TikTok artist, as she’s been recording for eight years. One listen to “Haunt You Back,” a tune that’s mellow yet poppy, and you’ll understand right away why her catchy tunes get stuck in people’s heads. Midtune says her new EP, Golden Girl (out Nov. 11), is more upbeat than her previous “sad girl” music on 2020 EP Dreams Melt Away. She says Golden Girl will also have a limited edition candle available to complete the listening experience.
