PopMatters premieres debut solo single from The Wans frontman Simon Patrick Kerr

Simon Patrick Kerr‘s solo effort Doldrums arrives on 20 July. It marks a stylistic change for the longtime frontman of the Wans. That trio’s powerhouse live shows and psychedelic leanings earned the band slots with Jack White, Pearl Jam and others as well as a reputation that many acts would kill for. This time, though, Kerr takes a slightly quieter, if no less mind-bending approach, weaving his magic on the acoustic number “Out of Your Mind”.

The track finds Kerr unravelling a personal tale of disappointment and upheaval in a voice that asks us to imagine Thom Yorke taking a cue from Neil Young or M. Ward. The quieter the song becomes, the more the listener finds themselves fraught with an internal conflict as they ask themselves if what they’re hearing is the sound of healing or only the first strike into a wound. Wide Open Country reviews John Calvin Abney’s new LP Coyote

john calvin abney coyote

You may not have heard of John Calvin Abney but there’s a good chance you’ve heardhim. He’s been John Moreland‘s loyal sideman on Moreland’s last few tours. If you read the credits on Chris Porter‘s stellar posthumously released album Don’t Go Baby, It’s Gonna Get Weird Without You, you’ve likely wondered if there’s an instrument Abney doesn’t play. Abney’s musicianship is the foreground for Coyote, an expansive album that draws on the guitar-slinger’s road fatigue. Abney’s previous album, Far Cries and Close Calls, was a promising start that leaned heavily on Dylan as an influence. This time around, Coyote, shows John Calvin Abney owning his voice.

Coyote is richly textured, which could only happen under the guidance of a musician like Abney. He is endlessly curious and playful, a virtuoso with almost no ego. Abney is committed to his songs and lets them breathe. Give a few spins to Coyote, but you won’t get tired of the fills Abney and his cohort add to the expansive songs. They seem to stretch beyond the horizon like an empty highway. READ MORE…

The Deli SF features Some Professional Help’s new EP ahead of album release party at Uptown Nightclub

Every now and again, a special kind of artist falls onto our radar—one that is able to give nods to music history, while also successfully innovating and pushing boundaries. One such artist is Scott Alexander, whose new project Some Professional Help is ambitious to say the least. Backed by a rotating 16-person band, Alexander leads the eclectic soundscape with his knowledge of orchestral music (if you think that there isn’t enough bassoon in pop music, then you and Alexander may be cut from the same cloth.) The self-titled debut EP is a glittering, baroque take on orchestral pop. With vocals akin to that of Bright Eyes’ Conor Oberst and arrangements that whisper influences from Sufjan Stevens, this project shines as a standout singer-songwriter debut. Some Professional Help will be performing in Oakland at Uptown Nightclub on May 24. READ MORE…

New Noise Magazine streams Some Professional Help’s new self-titled EP

Some Professional Help’s self-titled debut EP explores different angles of orchestral pop through the lens of indie rock & underground folk, guiding listeners through soundscapes of horns, strings, and thumping percussion. At times it feels like a well-curated mixtape for a lover; a little Bright Eyes here, some Jonathan Richman there, a nod to the Mountain Goats… each of the 6 tracks sound like a different band because each track is a different band, albeit with the same singer/band leader.

Listen to the radio and it’s obvious guitar music is on the cultural backburner at the moment. The music community has a thirst for new sounds, drowning themselves in ’80s and synths in the search for pop perfection. What they don’t know is perfection doesn’t live in a drum machine. Pop perfection is born from an orchestra, and Scott Alexander’s non-monogamous collective Some Professional Help is here to usher it in. READ MORE…

The Bitter Southerner streams Violet Delancey’s new album Columbia Road

Violet Delancey is, by her own description, a California girl who became “obsessed with Dolly Parton.”

That obsession uprooted her to Nashville, where she pursued the country-music dream. Her first album, 2016’s “When the Clock Strikes Midnight,” and it was a worthy homage to her musical inspirations. But her second, “Columbia Road,” which will be released in one week on May 25, is another matter entirely.

The pairing of Delancey with veteran producer Andy LeMaster, a co-founder of the longstanding Chase Park Transduction studio in Athens, Georgia, has resulted in a record that seems doubtful to get airplay on straight country radio, but dang sure should capture the attention of anyone who values sonic exploration. With LeMaster at the helm, Delancey has created a record on which the country is clear in her voice, but the lyrics conjure fairy tales in a sonic context that sounds more Kate Bush than Florida-Georgia Line. It even, at its best moments, recalls Emmylou Harris’ groundbreaking “Wrecking Ball” album. READ MORE…

The Oklahoman interviews John Calvin Abney about his new LP Coyote

john calvin abney coyote

John Calvin Abney counts sitting down at a well-tuned piano as one of life’s greatest pleasures.

So, even when he was penning songs for his new album on his guitar in hotel rooms or the back of his best pal’s van, the Oklahoma singer-songwriter and musician knew he would eventually pair many of his wistful lyrics to the tinkling of keys.

“Piano opens up a whole different world of color for a musician. … It’s funny because I wrote more than half of the songs on the guitar, but the transition to piano was pretty seamless because I felt like they were going to be those kind of songs in the first place,” Abney said during a recent phone interview shortly after rolling back into his home state after weeks on the road.
