Caitlin Anne Webster // “Wait (On Love)” & “Powhatan River Blues”

Mixing the driving narratives of traditional folk and country, the charm and depth of 60s soul along with her own modern edge, Caitlin Anne Webster delivers songs that cut deep.

As a member of Nightingale Rodeo, Webster and her bandmates earned acclaim from outlets that include LA Weekly. In 2015, she released her solo EP Black Moon and introduced an engaging blend of influences that range from traditional country to edgy vocal powerhouses like Bonnie Raitt and Linda Rondstadt.

Recorded live to tape in Los Angeles’ Palomino Studios with production from Dave Lang and engineering from Jason Soda, Webster’s two new tracks display her versatility as a multi-dimensional artist and songwriter. This time, she dug even deeper and found her inspiration from an array of artists that range from Blaze Foley and The Deslondes to Nancy Sinatra and Karen Dalton.

“Wait (On Love)” was born from the ashes of a long-term relationship and the challenges of separating two lives that had been deeply intertwined. Reflective and thoughtful, Webster melds her cuttingly honest lyrics with accompaniment from Iain Weigert on lead guitar, Travis Popichak on drums, Jada Wagensomer on bass with backing vocals from Amber Bradberry and Laura Marion.

On “Powhatan River Blues,” Caitlin’s soulful vocals and compelling acoustic guitar take center stage. Inspired by a carefree day spent on the water with her sister, Webster brings a sense of nostalgia and longing for a simpler time.

Now rooted in Tennessee, Webster is in the midst of an inspiring new creative chapter. With a full-length solo project and a new record from Nightingale Rodeo in the works, Caitlin Anne Webster is positioned to shift from one of the genre’s best kept secrets to one of its most pivotal voices.

“Caitlin Anne Webster’s got the kind of rich, clear singing voice that would have made every beatnik drop their espresso and every hippie drop their doobie — and make you drop your vape pen.” – Adobe & Teardrops

“Mixing the driving narratives of traditional folk and country, the charm and depth of 60s soul along with her own modern edge, Caitlin Anne Webster delivers songs that cut deep.” – Lefuturewave

“Caitlin Anne Webster’s new song digs deep on two levels – there’s the touchstones of her music which serve to give the song a classic traditional folk feel and then there’s the emotional depths.” – Americana UK

“An alluring bluesy folk number.” – Wide Open Country

Nikki & the Phantom Callers

Atlanta’s Nikki & the Phantom Callers are a jangling country-tinged indie-rock outfit with one boot heel planted firmly in retro 1960s sounds and the other in the now. Leader Nikki Speake—also a member of garage power trio Midnight Larks and all-girl psych rockers Shantih Shantih—grew up singing at church in smalltown Alabama, Dadeville to be exact. She was writing her own songs by age 16 and fronted punk and country bands during college. Since then, Speake has shared bills with Shooter Jennings, Joshua Hedley, Shannon and the Clams, L.A. Witch, The Legendary Shack Shakers, King Khan & the Shrines, Tav Falco, Lee Bains III & the Glory Fires, Banditos, and Lydia Loveless.  Speake has played in front of thousands at major Southeastern festivals such as Project Pabst, 420 Fest, Muddy Roots and Music Midtown.

Nikki & the Phantom Callers were named Creative Loafing Atlanta’s “Best Country Band of 2018” and their first release, a new 7-inch single “Prodigal Daughter” / “Mamas Should Know” gained glowing national reviews from the likes of Cowboys & Indians Magazine, PopMatters and Wide Open Country. The band features Aaron Mason on lead guitar, Russell Owens on drums, and Speake’s Shantih Shantih bandmate Anna Kramer—also of Anna Kramer & The Lost Cause and, most recently, newly resurrected Merge Records band The Rock*A*Teens—on bass & backing vocals. Speake and Kramer’s voices are front and center, calling to mind artists like Alvvays, Best Coast, and especially Neko Case singing in lockstep with her longtime backup singer, former Rock*A*Teen Kelly Hogan.

John Salaway

John Salaway / Americana Dreams (October 25th)

Frontman. Acclaimed songwriter. Sideman. Nationally-endorsed multi-instrumentalist. Producer. Since moving to Nashville in the early 2000s, John Salaway has become one of the city’s most accomplished musicians, holding down a weekly residency at the world-class BB King’s Blues Club while also playing shows with acts like Peter Frampton, Ben Folds, Anderson East, Zach Williams, and Denny Laine from the Moody Blues and Paul McCartney’s Wings. He’s a drummer. A guitarist. A pianist. And with albums like 2019’s Americana Dreams, he shows the full range of his abilities, mixing a lifelong appreciation for the Beatles’ classic pop melodies with the southern-fried sounds of his adopted hometown.

“With every album I make, you’ll always hear a touch of the Beatles,” says Salaway, who apprenticed under the Fab Four’s iconic sound engineer, Geoff Emerick, during the final years of the studio legend’s life. “With Americana Dreams, though, I wanted to show off my Americana influences, which come mostly from Crosby Stills Nash & Young, Bob Dylan, The Band, and Tom Petty.”

Those influences are all on full display throughout Americana Dreams, whose 10 self-produced songs bounce between heartland rock & roll epics, pensive ballads, and rootsy rave-ups. While Salaway’s earlier records found the songwriter playing nearly every instrument himself, Americana Dreams is a work of collaboration, featuring tracks co-written with India Ramey, Kyle Daniel, Scott Gerow, and other Nashville staples, as well as blistering slide guitar solos by Joey Fletcher and sweeping fiddle from Bri Murphy. On an album filled with some of Music City’s brightest lights, though, it’s Salaway who shines the brightest, whether he’s channeling Simon & Garfunkel’s softly harmonized folk-rock with “It’s All In Your Mind,” cranking up some bluesy soul with “You Better Believe,” or taking a moment to appreciate the smaller things in life with acoustic highlights like “The Beauty That Surrounds Us.”

Salaway has every reason to sound appreciative. A Florida native who grew up listening to Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and other records from his parents’ vinyl collection, he has sharpened his diverse sound and expanded his international reputation throughout a two-decade career, earning accolades from outlets like American Songwriter along the way. His debut solo album, 2013’s The Song in the Air, was named the year’s best independent pop/rock record by Yahoo and The Examiner, while his 2015 follow-up, Down the Road of Life, explored a heavier, grungier sound. Americana Dreams finds him chasing down new milestones, with “A Little Bit Broken” — the album’s kickoff single, full of rock & roll stomp and gritty guitar — climbing to Number One on the worldwide indie radio charts several months before the album’s release.

Appropriately, Americana Dreams is a sunny record, stocked with reminders to seize the moment, savor the good times, and let go of life’s unnecessary burdens. These songs preach the importance of focusing on the things that really matter: love, good people, even better music, and the times we share together.

“I want to inspire people and make them feel uplifted,” says Salaway, who echoes similar sentiments during tracks like “Inspire You,” a quietly anthemic song laced with violin and acoustic guitar. “That’s my goal in life: to be a positive force for somebody else.”

In Nashville, much has changed since Salaway moved to town more than 15 years ago. The skyline looks different. The music scene has exploded. But Salaway, with his recurring Friday afternoon gigs at BB King’s — sometimes performed as a one-man show with loops and effects, and sometimes performed with Salaway on the drums, leading his full band like a younger Don Henley — has become a citywide staple. His music is rooted in the best parts of the past and filled with contemporary finishes — a reminder that Nashville, despite its modern makeover, has always been a place anchored by classic songwriting. With Americana Dreams, he begins a new chapter in a story that’s still unfolding, excitedly showcasing new angles of his sound while still taking a moment to enjoy the ride.

“If you hold on to too much regret or negativity, you usually wind up seeing more problems in your life,” he explains. “It’s like a chain reaction because negativity attracts more negativity. These songs are about letting that bad stuff go and saying, ‘Look, life is beautiful. Let’s be thankful for what we have and enjoy our time together.'”

“Salaway offers a gritty voice with a twangy, blues and pop underbelly that serves a righteous bridge from Cracker/Camper Van Beethoven to Tyler Childers.” – Glide Magazine

“Salaway really shows off his knack at blending groovy rhythms with Americana twang on Americana Dreams. Years in the production studio have really honed his ear.” – Americana Highways

“John Salaway shares his devotion to music both past and present.” – The Daily Times

“Keeping in mind classic folk sounds of the ’60s and ’70s while marching straight into the future, Nashville’s John Salaway impresses on “The Beauty That Surrounds Us” from Americana Dreams.” – PopMatters

“Life-Changing.” – Wide Open Country

Bandsintown Interviews Hanne Hukkelberg About New & Self-Produced, 𝑩𝒊𝒓𝒕𝒉𝒎𝒂𝒓𝒌 LP

In a roundabout way, Hanne Hukkelberg’s new album ‘Birthmark’ is a breakup album.

In the two years since her last LP dropped, the “Embroidery” songstress has been silently reinventing herself. While 2017’s Trust put her onto the map with sprawling tracks that relied almost entirely on tonal changes, pitch transitions, and vocal chops, Birthmark takes a more minimalistic approach to production, allowing Hanne’s voice to take centerstage on all nine songs. It’s ironic, as the Norwegian singer-songwriter was born a maximalist, but this album sees her doing the exact opposite—breaking up with her innate nature and learning to trust the simpler things of her creative process.

The Deli LA praises Wyatt Blair’s power-pop earworm “Cherry Rose”

wyatt blair los angeles lolipop records baby robot media cherry rose for the first time

It may seem as if Wyatt Blair unlocked his hook-filled guitar pop from a time vault. But upon first listen, the tireless singer-songwriter’s latest single, “Cherry Rose,” sounds very much akin to this city’s late-seventies power-pop roots—its crunchy guitars and compressed drum sound could be easily mistaken as a Bomp/Elektra Records long-lost gem.
