Nasty Gal premieres Misty Boyce’s new video for “Oh Marie”

Misty Boyce is one of those musicians that I’d seen around town before I knew her as a solo artist. And by “seen around,” I mean that I saw her on-stage with BØRNS at Coachella 2016, holding down the keys and wailing on the harmonies in a taupe suede skirt. Set yourself a reminder, because she is about to release her next (woman-produced!) full-length album—called “Get Lost”—on February 16th, 2018.

Yes, that is so, so far away! But never fear, because she is releasing her perfectly cloudy-weather single “Oh, Marie” today, jam-packed with matriarchal angst and the desire to connect. And we are premiering the beautiful and affecting video, made by a brilliant group of white-haired young women in Sweden, right here.

Misty on making the video: “I remembered that a really talented young Børns fan named Sandra Trillkott had made a rad video for one of my older songs… So I approached her about it, and she took the idea I had (which was “Girl, Interrupted” meets mental hospital meets women wrestling with each other and themselves on many levels) and ran with it, with the help of her sister and a bunch of talented girl friends where they live in Sweden.” READ MORE

No Depression premieres Sara Rachele’s new single, “Anna”

Sara Rachele has impressed me from the get-go, and her upcoming album April Fool(out November 17) looks like it’s going to be her best yet. Already a master at baring her soul, the sparse instrumentation on “Anna” shows Sara Rachele at her most vulnerable. Of the song Rachele writes,

“Sometimes music is an easier way of communicating for me. I’ve been that way since I was a child. With “Anna,” the conversation is imaginary—a preparation for the actual conversation…

There are times when you know the truth will crumble, instead of materializing. These moments are phases, which often take shape in a song. The pain becomes more bearable, and albeit awful, the lies become understood. Yet, these moments are potentially necessary Machiavellian stepping-stones to get to the truth. I wrestle with the lack of permanence and its illusiveness… I once heard Ryan Adams talk about getting over the ‘illusion of permanence,’ and that definitely resonates with me in life and in my music.

So much music is about love and relationships, and in a sense, I guess this song is too. I’m recounting a story to a friend, and they couldn’t possibly understand—but art allows us a true closeness, even within ourselves, where we can say, “This is the best I am, and this is me doing the best I can. I know it’s not good enough, and I’m sorry.”

The overwhelming swell of Rachele’s voice brings the emotional fragility of the song into stark relief. This is one that will certainly stick with you.

Earbuddy premieres Phantom Electric’s new single, “Friends”

Phantom Electric are set to introduce themselves via their debut digital 7? Friends on October 6th. Leading the project is the Atlanta-based multi-instrumentalist and producer Nick Whitson. Whitson has a fair share of past experience in Atlanta projects such as Elevation and Alchemy. Here, he brings in Daniel Draddy, Sean Michelson (Alchemy), Peter Norman (Spectralux), Matthew Pendrick (Slow Parade/Gas Hound) and Kristopher Sampson (Ponderosa). As Phantom Electric, they create music that soars instantly as evident by the anthemic six-minute “Friends”. But don’t just take our word for it. Listen to our premiere of the new song. Plus, check out what Whitson had to say about it below.

Nick Whitson on the new song:

In a failed attempt to move to New York City, I had just returned from Europe where I blew all my money. That was late August 2014. We were supposed to go on tour for a month, but that fell through the day before we were scheduled to leave town. Throughout that year, I really changed and grew a lot, on a personal and spiritual level. I made lots of poor decisions against my better judgment and left a lot of people and places behind. It was a lot of ‘taking back my life,’ and posturing. I was in need of reorienting myself and finding a new direction to lead.

Alone in a basement with an acoustic guitar, everything was weighing heavily on me. I was also thinking a lot about my relationships with friends. When I came back, it was like everyone was cool with me and glad I was back, but everyone had a chip on their shoulder about it or had issues to sort out amongst themselves. That’s where the chorus of “Friends” really stemmed from…’Oh my friend, what troubles you?’ There was a lot of backbiting going on at the time: pride, arrogance, deceit, manipulation, greed, self-righteousness—you can kind of pick up where I talk about those little ‘sins’ in the verses.

The song is a take on one’s character, looking in the mirror, recognizing and accepting your own responsibility and truth. I wanted to call out solipsism, and take time to address overcoming your own mind to become aware of all things around you and your impact and influence on others in life. READ MORE…

PopMatters Premieres New Track from Derek Hoke, “Destination Unknown”

Derek Hoke

For the last seven years, Derek Hoke has found himself as the host of $2 Tuesdays at the 5 Spot in Nashville. There, he’s hosted the likes of artists like Shovels & Rope, Nikki Lane, Margo Price, and many others.

A consummate singer-songwriter in his own right, Hoke has been putting out albums since 2009. It wasn’t until more recently that his blend of roots stylings began to bubble towards the top alongside his contemporaries.

He found considerable acclaim in the Americana world for the release of his third LP, Southern Moon, in 2016. His fourth record, Bring the Flood, is coming out on 13 October via Little Hollywood. With it comes a total change of pace for the Georgia-born troubadour.

While he’s still blending styles as far-ranging as rock, country, gospel, and many iterations of blues on his latest, Hoke is also taking a considerably darker turn in regards to his LP’s conceptualization this go-around. Inspired by the current dark political climate, his heartland sound has become a bit more brooding and to-the-point.

With all of that said, his latest single, “Destination Unknown”, feels like a hopeful spark. Inspired by a night on the road, it offers a soothing inspiration amidst the heaviness that Hoke mentions as a driving force behind Bring the Flood’s creation.

Of “Destination Unknown”, Hoke says, “One the most inspirational places for me to write a song is while driving in my car. Pre-dawn. No radio on. Just driving. Usually west of Nashville. No particular place in mind. Hit an intersection and flip a coin. What’s down this road? Don’t know…yet.”

The Boot Premieres New Track from Kat Myers & the Buzzards

Kat Myers & The Buzzards

Americana quartet Kat Myers & the Buzzards are premiering a new song, “Under the Rug,” exclusively for readers of The Boot.

Featuring the smoky-voiced Myers on lead vocals and a pulsing bass groove, “Under the Rug” is an anthem for procrastinators and avoidant people of all kinds. Myers also found inspiration for the song in a Catholic tradition she never quite understood.

“It also goes along with the recurring ‘Owe Everybody Money’ theme of Catholicism, and how many Catholics simply go to confession and tell a priest their sins, then come home and act like all is fine. This was always a very strange phenomenon to me,” Myers explains to The Boot. “So, I suppose that’s how the idea for “Under the Rug” came about. It’s not meant to be a very serious song, but the theme is slightly serious, but I don’t really want to talk about it anymore, [so] let’s just sweep it under the rug.”

After parts of the song rolled around in her mind for over a year, Myers headed into Jackson Browne’s Groove Masters studio to record “Under the Rug.” The song was essentially just a rough draft when she stepped inside.

“The amazing thing is that there was such a good vibe with everybody and in the studio that the song basically finished itself,” Myers says. “It’s hard not to appreciate the history of the space, so we approached the recording in classic rock ‘n’ roll fashion, recording the track live in one day and not shaving off too many of the rough edges.”
