No Depression reviews Ben Trickey’s new pensive, ‘roots-informed’ LP Choke & Croon

BenTrickey_2016_AlphonsoWhitfield[1_“Three years was far too long to wait a new Ben Trickey album. His debut, Rising Waters, was one of my favorites of 2013 and continues to be a standby, even three years later. But maybe three years was the right amount of time; it goes without saying that Choke & Croon is meticulous in its execution. Trickey has side-stepped away from the distinctive, mournful Americana that defined his first album. Instead, it’s probably more accurate to say that this collection of songs is informed by roots music. The songs are rife with guitar and fiddle, but feel more like set dressing than driving forces of the music. This is especially true in the six-minute epic “Monster,” which brings Trickey’s previous experience as an abstract installation artist to the forefront.” READ MORE…

PopMatters premieres title track from The Dexateens, “Teenage Hallelujah”

dexateens cornelius chapel records alabama

The Dexateens’ “Teenage Hallelujah” is, as the title would suggest, an ode to the hedonism and stupidity that comes with being a teenager from the perspective of the older and jaded. Accentuating that hedonism is a guitar onslaught that rushes through the song’s two minutes, ripping solos and broken-amp sound manipulation taking center stage. It’s the quintessential Southern rock song, dusty and distorted and frenetic. Teenagers grow up fast, so this song speeds forth appropriately.

Brooklyn roots rockers Mail the Horse share new video “Backlash” with PopMatters

imageedit_2_7378789711Mail the Horse’s sun-baked indie rock rolls like endless plains on a cross-country road trip, relaxed nearly to the threshold of sleep. “Backlash” wavers under a sheet of dust, psych-rock guitars noodling over the twang of a subdued country backdrop. It’s the kind of rock as at home in a Williamsburg bar as a Topeka barn, a universal style meant to unite. This sort of county-fair indie will stay in our cultural consciousness until the day the last guitar is smashed onstage, so it’s a relief that “Backlash” proves we still have a ways to go before we hit the bottom of the barrel. Elmore Magazine shares new single from award-winning Nashville singer/songwriter Becky Warren

rsz_becky_warren-high_res-3-photo_by_kyle_dean_reinfordOver a decade ago, Becky Warren made an auspicious debut as part of the critically lauded Boston alt-country outfit the Great Unknowns. But soon, threatened to get in the way of musical success. Warren fell in love and married a soldier, only to lose him a mere week later when he was deployed to Iraq. Over the following years, she struggled with their long distance relationship, and felt his pain acutely when he returned home with PTSD, the trauma of the experience forcing her into an extended hiatus from singing and songwriting. “The whole time I wasn’t writing, it was very painful for me,” she shared with Elmore. “I couldn’t even really listen to music, because it made me feel terrible. I was thinking about everything I was missing.” Eventually, the two came to a mutual divorce agreement and Warren slowly took up her pen, finding that she could ease the pain and come alive again by releasing her soul into the music. With her fellow Great Unknowns scattered across the country, she began a career as a solo artist, and it wasn’t long before she won both the prestigious Merlefest Songwriting Competition in 2014 and the Kerrville New Folk competition in 2015. The Skintights were born out of wedlock, on the dusty road from show to show. Sara Rachele and wWaylon were out on an East Coast tour, after their drummer joined the Navy, the simple pair made frantic calls to Gyasi Heus for help. He came in on the touring side, and the Skintights materialized out of pure musical frustration, hotel jock-itch and gear-shoulder. READ MORE…
