IndieMinded interviews Radnor & Lee on their high school years

IndieMinded Interview

We recently had a chance to catch up with indie folk-pop duo Radnor & Lee to take a walk down memory lane. Both Josh Radnor and Ben Lee gave us a little insight into their life during high school, and even took some time out to make a playlist for us (and you).

“Ben Lee began his career as a young teenager in the early ’90s, in the Australian lo-fi punk band Noise Addict, who were discovered by taste-making artists Sonic Youth and the Beastie Boys. This began what is now an almost 25-year career of producing intelligent and spiritual indie-pop songs that have soundtracked Ben’s inner life in music.”

“I started playing in a band, Noise Addict, when I was 14 – so high school for me was not really high school – it was a series of interruptions to my ongoing adventures in the world of indie rock. Music was everything to me. It was a map and a destination. It soundtracked my experiences and also dictated them. I was so lucky to be a teenager during the indie-rock lo-fi craze of the 90s. It gave me a culture that I could fit into without polish or pretension. I was also obsessed with sex, obviously, and indie rock presented a more sublimated, genteel version of masculinity that I could relate to – not about being macho or anything, but about being smart, funny and dorky. School was really just something that I had to get through each day to get home to my guitar, my band, and my records. I still don’t think about it very much!” – Ben Lee READ MORE…

PopDose premieres “Good in it All” by The Good Graces

PopDust Premiere

Popdose is pleased to present the new single from Americana/indie-folk collective the Good Graces. Led by frontwoman Kim Ware, the group opened the Indigo Girls 2015 summer tour, and has shared bills with The Old Ceremony, Vandaveer, and more.

Set Your Sights (out July 7) is a reflective set of tracks that explore getting older, looking back on life, and trying to correct missteps. Ware describes as her “midlife crisis record.”

New single “Good In it All” is a quiet, downtempo ballad about finding the silver lining in times of loss, driven by Ware’s airy vocals atop blankets of atmospheric, reverb-washed guitars, piano, and sparse percussion. READ MORE…

Surviving the Golden Age premieres “Puget Sound” by Bret Busch

Surviving the Golden Age Premiere

Atlanta music scene veteran Bret Busch is preparing to release his new album, Pills Lace & Confetti on July 14th. Surviving the Golden Age is excited to premiere the latest single “Puget Sound.” With a hand-clapped beat and funk synths, the track is danceable as all get-out. While it is reminiscent of bands like Miami Horror or Escort, the track does deliver some surprises. Busch explains “we were looking to record a simple and catchy party song. We added the weird vocal harmony, quirky guitar solos, and percussion accents in the hopes of delivering some unexpected complexity into the mix.” READ MORE…

Vents Magazine interviews Injected’s Danny Grady about fatherhood, Star Wars, and the band’s first album in 15 years

Vents Magazine Interview

Hi Danny, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

-Rapidly shifting between deep existential despair over existence being a simulation/instant meteor death/the arbitrary nature of reality and excitement that the French place down the street put pig’s feet back on the menu.  So, basically, normal.

Can you talk to us more about your song “The Truth About You”?

-Not anymore than the lyrics could tell you.  At the risk of being pedantic, I think it’s obvious that the “You” that keeps surfacing throughout the album is really “Me”.   That’s the not-so-secret ‘secret’ of the record.  Folks like things explained to them these days, and I don’t mind.  I don’t see it as a function of anxiety or stupidity, more a function of the sheer amount of information we must parse nowadays.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

-It’s a pastiche of my late 20s, mixed with some codependency themes.  I’m glad I survived.

Any plans to release a video for the track?

-Given the imagery in the song, I think a video would be redundant.  If a particularly vicious live version was filmed, there’d be sense in doing that, seeing as how every band I’ve ever been in has been better live than on record. READ MORE…

No Depression premieres “Where I’m Going” by Bret Busch

No Depression Premiere

With over 25-plus years as the singer in half a dozen Atlanta bands, Bret Busch is gearing up to release his debut solo effort, Pills Lace & Confetti due July 14th. Produced by Atlanta legends The Rock*A*Teens’ Will Joiner, who also wrote the project’s lead single “Ink Black Sea”, the album came together from two ends of the musical spectrum—the indie-centric Merge Records roster (including members of Destroyer and The Rock*A*Teens) and the backing band of R&B star Janelle Monae. These guest artists’ combined talents and Busch’s admirable range as a vocalist create a sparkling, laid-back pop album that highlights Busch’s eclectic influences including Jazz, Brazilian rhythms, and Country flourishes. No Depression is pleased to premiere “Where I’m Going” a twangy country shuffler that speaks to the familiar tale of overindulgence and loneliness after a night at the corner bar.  READ MORE…

New Noise Magazine premieres video for “Ghost Dance” by Radiator King

New Noise Premiere

We’re pleased to bring you the premiere of Radiator King’s new music video for their song “Ghost Dance” (watch it below). The track is taken from the band’s latest album A Hollow Triumph After All, which is available for purchase through Bandcamp.

The video for “Ghost Dance” displays the proclaimed “Madness that shook the earth,” through black and white, found footage of “us vs. them” brutality on the Western frontier. Radiator King’s deep, raspy breaths light a fire under the lyrics (“We are dancing on the rim of the world”) that run across the screen, frantically scrawled in a manner befitting the tracks dissonant, uneasy tone.
