Bio:

Duncan Nielsen has sported the moniker ‘DONCAT’ since 2013. Since then he’s lived in a vista-abundant neighborhood in San Francisco, CA, just south of Haight-Ashbury. From almost anywhere in his house the eye can reach the eastern edge of the city, as well as downtown.  On most days, just on the shoulders of the hill behind the house, fingers of heavy fog quietly creep in.  While most would consider the view an inspiration, Nielsen finds it to be a distraction. He focuses his sights inward.

As a teen, he spent the lion’s share of his time channeling classic rock and folk. In junior-high, he gifted Led Zeppelin I at a birthday party and was ostracized. By the time he entered high school, he found himself as the token kid-with-a-guitar: loved by all and known by none. This bolstered his penchant for writing iconoclastic songs, as well as skipping high school to surf alone.

These days, Nielsen moves from his grandmother’s Wurlitzer piano to his father’s hand-me-down acoustic guitar writing songs at home. He prefers not to look out the window.

DONCAT will be released his latest LP, Easy Cowboy on September 2nd, 2016.  It’s 11 tracks are a string of haunted musings with an onion-centered soul. Every doubt and question set forth is a layer to peel back, revealing the complexity of one’s past decisions and its effects on the individual at the brink of the present.  Third track “Take A Break (From Cool)” is a slow-motion wave of guitar and synths in which Nielsen sings “maybe it’s all in your head/it’s just you’ve never turned to face it.”  This record is a vignette into blissful uncertainty.

To date, Nielsen’s songs have been featured in many network television series and independent films. He’s opened shows for The Walkmen’s Hamilton Leithauser, Hayden, and Chuck Ragan.  While he’s not writing and performing his own music, he tours with San Francisco-based band, Geographer, as a guitarist, keyboard player and backup vocalist.

Dead Posey – Freak Show

Befitting their handle, Dead Posey is fascinated by what lies beyond, their music exploring the nature of mortality through both waking life and dreams. But while the Los Angeles duo’s lyrics lean toward the metaphysical, its debut EP, Freak Show, is a raucous, fuzz-loaded collection of back-to-basics rock ‘n’ roll. Singer Danielle Souza’s inspired vocals blend seamlessly with guitarist Kyle Foster’s muddy, blown-out riffs in this vibrant, boot-stomping five-song collection.

The band spent most of 2016 working on Freak Show and credits producer/co-writer ALLIES (Tony Fagenson of Eve 6) with helping guide their vision and develop their sound. The EP was created almost entirely in the studio, starting from Souza and Foster’s bare-bones vocals-and-guitar demos. “We’d take our three-month old fetus of a song into the studio with Tony and then nurture and grow it into a snarling monster together,” Souza says. From the anthemic “Don’t Stop the Devil” to the soulful swamp rock of “Boogeyman,” Dead Posey will leave you eager to let your freak flag fly.

“Anything weird and abnormal, that’s what lights a fire in us,” Souza says. “Lyrically, I find myself thinking about the morbid truth that we will all die one day and descend into the unknown—so you might as well grab life by the balls.” While the macabre is a persistent thread throughout the band’s debut, the idea of human connection also weaves its way into each song, unfolding like a story told over a late night of hard drinking amongst close friends.

“I love when certain parts of your life end up having a soundtrack to them because of what was playing at the moment,” Foster says. “Creating art and sharing it with the world is an intimate thing—it helps people relate and make memories.”

The two halves of Dead Posey first met at a recording studio in Hollywood in 2013 during an album release party. “It wasn’t really my scene,” Souza says, “so I wandered off alone and found a kindred, outsider spirit in Kyle.” She noticed Foster while he was lighting a candle inside a miniature glass cottage and the two launched into a conversation about setting Tinker Bell’s house on fire. After discovering they shared similar musical influences, as Souza puts it, they “stumbled around in the weeds together” with various projects and bands, eventually leading to the birth of Dead Posey.

The new EP’s lead single “Don’t Stop the Devil” is a dark, ’90s-inspired grunge anthem about how temptation can sink its teeth into the best of us. The single is accompanied by a music video directed by Chris Berkenkamp (Dionysus Co Entertainment) that is at once dizzying, mystifying and deliciously creepy. The band will be bringing Freak Show to life at shows throughout 2017, chasing the darkness as deep as it will take them.

Exclusive premiere: The Boot debuts “The Big Old American Dream” by Nathan Bell

The Boot Exclusive Premiere

“The Big Old American Dream” offers up a diverse look at the folks in small-town USA, ranging from a heavy-set veterinarian in love with a patent attorney-turned-rodeo clown to the proud owner of his very own mobile home. According to Bell, the song is about “real Americans, with no black-and-white oversimplification and no ‘us vs. them,’ left / right posturing — just beautiful, inclusive, somehow-vibrant shades of gray.” READ MORE…

Bio:

Acid Tongue is the fuzz-pop brainchild of Seattle’s Guy Keltner (formerly of stoner-rock outfit Fox and the Law) & Ian Cunningham – perverted in their youth by adolescent exposure to mind-altering substances and strange, spiritually-driven parenting techniques. Blending elements of AM-radio soul, vintage psychedelia, folk and slacker rock, the band has developed an avid cult following throughout the US and the UK.

After years of extensive traveling throughout the United States, as well as some experimental therapy in a Mexican yurt, the boys have united to produce their take on the music of their parents’ generation. Incorporating imagery of the afterlife, dream-states, and drifter-culture, Acid Tongue seeks to enlighten listeners to their swingin’, contemplative lifestyle.

In addition to Keltner’s lyrical ode to all those suffering from the American condition, the band incorporates a brand of dripping visuals (drawn by street artist friend HAM BAM) that pay homage to Southern California skate culture, left-wing political activism and 90s Nickelodeon television. Together, the stark imagery and aesthetic have helped the band maintain a lasting impression both online and at their raucous, blown-out live shows.

Enlisting an ever-rotating cast of musicians, Acid Tongue released two well-received EPs, I Died Dreaming and Beautiful Disaster, in 2016.

Their latest release, the singles Get Free/Careless, are a commentary on the merits of remaining optimistic amidst this dark political climate. Recorded as a one-off during the sessions for the band’s forthcoming LP Babies, Get Free is an attempt to make sense of the mania, hatred, and utter confusion that permeates every aspect of the modern American condition.

Surviving the Golden Age streams lead single “Of Fisticuffs” by The Dears

The Dears

Surviving the Golden Age Streams

The Dears have been pumping out albums for the better part of two decades. They just announced their seventh full-length album, Times Infinity Volume Two. The lead single, “Of Fisticuffs,” is a wall-of-sound with jangly guitars, pianos, and drums. In the middle of the loudness is Murray Lightburn’s vocals–calm and cool. The catchy track shows a band that still hasn’t lost their sense of urgency. READ MORE…
