mxdwn praises LA psych-rockers Mystic Braves’ new single “Perfect Person”

One of the best retro-revivalist bands are back with a new album, as Mystic Braves are readying their new single “Perfect Person.” The song is a great example of this Southern California band’s ability to give a modern interpretation of the sounds of the psychedelic ’60s, adding a present day flair. The songs on the new album take a deep look into heartache and the album serves as an emotional catharsis. READ MORE…

mxdwn compares John Calvin Abney’s “Sundowner” to Elliott Smith & William Elliott Whitmore

john calvin abney coyote

John Calvin Abney is an Oklahoman musician who adeptly mixes classic Americana sounds with more modern genres like dream pop and indie folk. The result is a sound that is equal parts Elliot Smith and William Elliott Whitmore and we’ve got the premiere of a great example of this skill in “Sundowner.” The single shows off Abney’s Oklahoma vocal twang while showcasing a songwriter that is not satisfied with classic American songwriting practices. mxdwn premieres “Tall Place” by Slut Magic

Hailing from Brooklyn, New York, punk rock quartet Slut Magic are clearly okay with a little abrasion. Their debut album has a pretty in-your-face title – In My Mouth – and the album cover features a shot of a women’s not-quite-covered chest. And then of course, there’s the name. Being rough around the edges doesn’t just reflect the visual aesthetic of the band, it also has bearing on their music. Today we have the premiere of the first song from In My Mouth, a song that burns slowly through the verses before pummeling the listener with sludgy chorus that along with the loud-quiet dynamic of the song structure recalls Bleach-era Nirvana.

The band was formed by singer/violinist Emma Sky with a little bit of inspiration from designer Lauren Ruicci – who both found the use of the word “slut” to be empowering and beautiful, hence the band name. They will be releasing their debut album through their own label, Laruicci Records, which comes out on April 13.

Sky created the band out of growing tired with her main band, which was called Violint Wednesday. When the rest of the band, which at the time included Michael Bottomley, Marc Hall and Alex Baker suggested they start playing completely fresh music, the idea for the name Slut Magic came to Sky, who recalled her and Ruicci’s ideas about the word “slut.” The current lineup of the band includes Sky, Bottomley (aka Hot Boyfriend) and Sir Marc Hall. mxdwn Premieres “Multilayered” New Song “Look Back” by DEGA

Kalen and Aslyn Nash are a married couple who have spent time all over the world together and now have a new music group called DEGA. The synth-pop duo recently toured with Washed Out and that is a good place to start when describing their sound. Today we have the premiere of a new song from the band called “Look Back.”

The song consists of layers of synth melodies piled high, creating a dynamic and unforgettable sound. “Look Back” was a vibe thing,” said Kalen. “It didn’t really have a special story or meaning. It started as a bass line. The lyric says, ‘Look Back if you walk away, if you walk away I’ll be gone,’ which creates a word story, but that came secondary. The lyrics on this one fell into place after the music was already a thing.” READ MORE…

mxdwn premieres Cheap Tissue’s titular single

Los Angeles quartet Cheap Tissue play punk the way it was meant to be: fast, no-frills and with a hard-hitting attitude. They fit perfectly into the lineage of classic punk bands, a few of which (The Vibrators, The Zeros) they’ve even opened for. mxdwn has the premiere of the title track from the band’s self-titled LP, which will be released on March 2. The group consists of members Andrew Taylor (Guitar), Jesse Youngblood (Guitar), John Tyree (Bass) and Matthew Spizer (drums).

Taylor and Youngblood lead the way vocally, delivering caustic yelps atop the blistering instrumentals. The four musicians move all over the punk spectrum, varying tempos and chord progressions to make the song feel a lot longer than its sub-two-minute runtime. Cheap Tissue is promised to be “12 tracks of unapologetic, blitzkrieg rock.” Speaking to the punk rock attitude of the band, their album was produced by Ignacio Gonzalez of Lolipop Records over the course of one session. That’s jammin’ econo. READ MORE…

mxdwn premieres Cheap Tissue’s self-titled record

Garage Punk on the Come Up

Garage rock isn’t easy to come by these days. With the evolution of genres, advancement of technology and time, not too many groups are making intentionally fuzzy music. Rocking the most intentional unclean production, Cheap Tissue is the exception. The Los Angeles garage-punk band signed to Lolipop Records sports a refreshing take on the genre with distorted guitars and gang vocals on their new self-titled record.

Cheap Tissue begins with “Feed The Children,” which starts as a standard garage punk song. The three vocalists in Cheap Tissue give it that extra spice which makes it unique. Not to mention the blistering guitar riffs and solos that take place in the middle of the track. It’s certainly an acceptable opener to understand what Cheap Tissue is about.

“Cheap Tissue” is similar to a Fidlar track, with fast-paced, quick chords and a tempo that lasts the whole record. “Bag & Number” really emphasizes the snarl in the vocals that is reminiscent of so many punk bands before Cheap Tissue, like the Sex Pistols. Once again the guitar work in this track is very impressive towards the latter half of the song. Cheap Tissue masters the 20-second guitar solo within this debut record, rambling through various scales.

“On the Corner” starts with a catchy bass line, but the hooks don’t stop there as this track continues with the pattern of guitar solos and even has one of the more memorable choruses on the album. “New Promotion” has almost a dancy vibe to it with the “woos” in the vocals. The contrast in vocals between the lead and the backgrounds deep, bassy vocals is a direction that Cheap Tissue should explore more in the future, as it adds more chemistry within the band and their tracks. It is probably the most differentiating portion of the album making the track very well rounded.

While Cheap Tissue reaches Joyce Manor levels of short, sweet and to the point, it is an impressive debut that reintroduces casual music fans to a genre that may have slid under their radar. Although Cheap Tissue could use a little more variety within, it establishes who the band is at their core which is what self-titled records is all about anyways. READ MORE…
