Indie-folk/dreampop artist Misty Boyce shares new single at Nylon

misty boyce los angeles get lost

Misty Boyce is a goddamn rockstar. A piano player by trade, Boyce (and all her pent-up emotions) comes alive when the guitar’s in her hand. “Nothing gives me more satisfaction than putting on an electric guitar, turning the amp as loud as it goes, and just rocking out,” she tells us. So she did just that on the brink of a breakup. “I Don’t Wanna Be Yer Gurl” is the result. READ MORE…

NYLON Premieres Wons Phreely’s “The Night Has An Alibi.”

Musician Wons Phreely grew up in Perth, Australia, a coastal town which houses a thriving mining industry but little in the way of an artistic subculture. Once he got the chance, he traded in his hometown for the more creative L.A., where he moved with the help of an “Extraordinary Artist” visa. That has proven to be a very fitting description for him, considering we can’t get enough of his music here at NYLON. READ MORE…

NYLON premieres music video for “Is This Ready?” by Sleep Thieves

Nylon Premiere

Sleep Thieves, the Dublin-based synth pop trio of Sorcha Brennan, Wayne Fahy, and Keith Byrne, are known for creating music both intimate and haunting, and their latest release, “Is This Ready?”, is no exception. And now, the group has turned one of their brooding tunes into a full-on horror show in their new music video, premiering right here on NYLON.

The song’s lyrical content was inspired by Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s 1892 short story “The Yellow Wallpaper,” which tells the haunting tale of a young woman’s descent into psychosis. The eeriness of the lyrics are felt throughout the visual, as it portrays a woman victimized by the patriarchy in a dystopian society. Using classic horror film video techniques like intense close-ups and strobe lights, the group’s nightmarish vision comes to life while their dark, synth-pop tune plays throughout. READ MORE…

NYLON calls Hayley Thompson-King’s “Teratoma” “The Rock Song of the Summer”

Singer-songwriter Hayley Thompson-King was known for being a curious child, and it’s a characteristic which has stayed with her throughout the years, growing to a fever pitch in her catchy new single, “Teratoma.” The fuzzy garage-rock track encourages listeners to not only question but also dismantle the idea of false idols, and today, NYLON is premiering the new single.  READ MORE…

Nylon calls 8 Inch Betsy “the coolest female-fronted queer band”

8 inch betsy the mean days meghan galbraith eli burke Melissa Thomas 307 Knox Records chicago NYLON

8 Inch Betsy is a female-fronted queercore punk band from Chicago. Earlier this year, the band’s frontwoman Meghan Galbraith passed away, leaving a finished album behind. In Galbraith’s honor, 8 Inch Betsy will be releasing their posthumous sophomore album, The Mean Days on November 13 via 307 Knox Records. Today, NYLON premieres their brand new single “Reformatory School.” It’s a song about falling in love too easily and being told who to be instead of knowing yourself. Bassist Eli Burke shared the following in an email:
“Meghan usually recorded new songs in Garageband. Then she would email them to me asking what I thought. We lived together, almost under the tracks of the Brown Line in Chicago. It was super loud. This is what she wrote about the Reformatory School demo: ‘I had a little fun recording this. You can hear the train like crazy cuz I was in the living room. There is a fuck up near the end that I don’t feel like fixing. And the end needs an outro still. Let me know if you like it, or don’t.’ LISTEN HERE…

Glowing writeup of Book Club’s new track “Fallen Leaves” today at NYLON

Book Club press photo One-Way Moon Folk, Indie, Country Robbie Horlick, Rachel Buckley, Matt Jarrard, Todd Kerstetter, Gus Fernandez baby robot media

There are times when we really need to listen to punk rock in order to jolt ourselves out of the start-of-the-week slump. Other times, though—like on particularly cold, rainy Mondays in January—all we want is to listen to music that’s a little easier on the ears, but still the right amount of moody. This brand-new track from indie-folk collective Book Club is just what the doctor ordered.

“Fallen Leaves” pairs heart-wrenching lyrics with rich, gorgeous melodies, making it haunting and wintery; the kind of song that makes you want to roll up in a blanket like a burrito and think about the past.

The song will be on the group’s upcoming album, One-Way Moon, which is out on February 17 via The Cottage Recording Co. & Bear Kids Recordings. We’ll have this little song on repeat until then. LISTEN HERE…
