Columbia’s Free Times – The Post and Courier shares “1 or 2” socially distanced performance series w/ E.Z. Shakes…

The dark and lonely recesses of a mind in solitude have been explored by many a folk singer. So too have conflicts between faith and doubt, God and the Devil, good and evil — and various scramblings of which gets lined up with what.

So by rights, Zach Seibert’s band E.Z. Shakes, which concerns itself with all of the above, shouldn’t feel so singular. But “The Spirit” — as it’s performed intimately here in front of Jarod Charzewski The Band Shell installation at the St. Andrews branch of the Richland Library, and as it appears with more echoing grandeur on the group’s forthcoming and identically titled second LP — proves once more that there’s just something about Seibert and company that makes them distinct from so many other artists who tread similar ground.

Kudos to those artists who have managed to get some work done despite the political strife and pandemic lockdowns rocking the US this year. Nat Puff — who goes by the stage name Left at London — has been one of them. Puff’s musical output this year has been prodigious: a double-sided single (Jenny Durkan Resign in Disgrace), an EP of cover songs (This One’s For the Milfs), a couple of additional songs and singles to be incorporated into future albums, and now the six-song EP Transgender Street Legend: Volume 2. Audiofemme debuts NEW single from Stephie James, “Where the Sage Grows,” calling it “cheerful … James’ spirited singing produces a carefree mood with vivid lyrics.”

Stephie James’ musical career began when she was just 15 years old, at a Detroit coffee shop she and her brother opened together. “There was really nowhere for younger people to perform; we were too young to play in bars,” she remembers. Almost every night, she’d get on stage and play her own music as well as covers of songs by artists like Bob Dylan and Carole King. Then, one night, R&B icon Anita Baker walked in and watched her play. In what felt like a dream, they talked for the whole evening, and eventually, Baker invited James to tour with her. Before long, she was regularly opening for her shows.

Americana UK debuts the title track from E.Z. Shakes’ forthcoming LP, The Spirit, calling it “apocalyptic…”

Zach Seibert formed E.Z. Shakes with Todd T. Hicks as an acoustic duo – Seibert on guitar and Hicks on banjo and pedal steel – in 2017 and things have moved pretty quickly since then, the band have two EPs and an album under their belt and another album on the way.  They also grew to a five piece with John Furr adding electric guitar, acoustic guitar and  keyboards, Stanford Gardner on percussion and bass by Jim Taylor.  John Furr also acts as the in-house producer on this fuller sound.  On the new record the band recruited Mitch Easter (the producer of seminal albums by R.E.M. and Pavement) to mix the album at his Fidelitorium studio.
