Michael McArthur interviews with For Folk’s Sakes

Songwriting has always been a form of therapy for Michael McArthur. Over the past decade, the Florida native has filled a handful of EPs with his own mix of raw soul and lushly layered folk, working with producers like David Bianco (Tom Petty, Lucinda Williams) and Greg Wells (Adele, One Republic) along the way. He makes his full-length debut with 2019’s Ever Green, Ever Rain, an album that’s by turns warm, woozy, and wistful. The album shows the full range not only of McArthur’s voice — a gorgeous instrument that soars and swoons, flecked with vibrato and palpable emotion — but his songwriting, too, bouncing from the soft acoustics of “Elaine” to the percussive pulse of “Save Me From the Fire”.

Recorded with Grammy-winning producer Ryan Freeland and inspired by McArthur’s long period of isolation and self-repair, Ever Green, Ever Rain is both earthy and anthemic — the sound of a songwriter who’s unafraid to shine a light on his own faults.

West Virginia’s Charles Wesley Godwin brings some Appalachian country soul to York Calling this morning.

Here in Eden is the new track from American country singer/songwriter Charles Wesley Godwin. There’s a lot to like in it for country music fans: gritty vocals, mournful guitar and earthy storytelling. The song is a homage to his home country in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and the music really transports you there.

It feels as if Godwin is telling a story on he can tell in his music and I’m certain he’ll find more than a few fans over here in the UK as well.

Wide Open Country premieres Charles Wesley Godwin’s live video of “Here in Eden”

West Virginia-based singer-songwriter Charles Wesley Godwin carries on the respected tradition of story telling of his native Appalachia on his debut album Seneca (out on February 15). The 26-year-old artist, who’s shared bills with Tyler Childers, Shooter Jennings, Aaron Watson, Colter Wall and more, started singing after being cut from auditions for the West Virginia University football team. Turns out, that failed audition was kismet.

Godwin displays his sincerity, emotional depth and warm vibrato in the live performance video of his soul-searching tune “Here in Eden,” which Wide Open Country is premiering today.

Tongue Tied Magazine features Grand Canyon’s “Standing in the Shadows” in Weekly Round Up

“Standing in the Shadows” is a testament to Grand Canyon’s aim to focus on classic sounds and pull from the music catalog of the 70s. The track would definitely fit better on Spotify’s Fleetwood Mac Radio than most modern playlists. It evokes a sense of nostalgia, the babies of the 90s and new millennium never really had, though probably heard growing up from their parent. In the chorus, vocalists Casey Shea and Amy Wilcox harmonize: “Baby come with me. Everything’s gonna be alright. Baby come with me. Let’s run away tonight.” It’s nearly four minutes of lovely, fun campfire rock.

Saving Country Music lists Charles Wesley Godwin’s “Seneca” as one of the most anticipated albums of 2019

Saving Country Music first strongly praised Charles Wesley Godwin while he was with his previous band Union Sound Treaty as an artist we could expect to hear from in the years to come. With the old band disbanded, he’s now branching out as a solo artist.

If the early indications are true, this West Virginia native could slide right in there with artists like Tyler Childers and Colter Wall as one of the most authentic voices of the current era. Goodwin’s first single called “Coal Country” is just a taste of what we may get from what could be a very important artist in 2019.
