PopMatters premieres Oginalii’s “Substance Abuse”

Oginalii

Billed as sludge pop and desert rock, Nashville’s Oginalii follows in the footsteps of other hallmark female indie trailblazers like Mitski and Sadie Dupuis by confronting rock ‘n’ roll patriarchy and toppling it.

Fronted by Emma Hoeflinger (vocals) and Karalyne Winegamer (drums), the duo brings the goods with a slow-burning, brooding track in the form of “Substance Abuse”. Simultaneously ethereal and soaring while also embracing a hazy and mired grunge, the psych-rock soundscape that Oginalii manages to develop here is impressive by any measure. It’s all stapled together by the strong vocal show Hoeflinger puts on over its searing chorus.

On the story behind “Substance Abuse”, Hoeflinger says:

“‘Substance Abuse’ means a lot of things to us. We over consume constantly. Whether it’s Diet Coke or Jameson (my personal favorite), we let things take over ourselves and don’t stop to see what we’ve left behind. We are all guilty of it, but I think it’s good to accept our flaws and continually try to better ourselves as well as those around us.

‘Substance Abuse’ is about the constant denial of the inevitable come down we all feel. One minute you’re up and the next you’re just telling someone ‘I’m fine.’ We wanted it to give off that ebb and flow feeling.

Our producer, Curtis Rousch, was instrumental in helping us get the sounds we really wanted out of ‘Substance Abuse’. I don’t think we ever would have gone as sonically trippy if he wasn’t there. The layering of weird guitar sounds and soft vocals made it just that, a trip.” READ MORE…

No Depression premieres “Divided” by Moonsville Collective

Moonsville Collective

So-Cal’s Moonsville Collective return with their third EP of 2017, Moonsville III, on September 8th.  Moonsville’s Corey Adams says; “EP III is different than EP II in that we went for a warmer approach instrumentally. Overall it has a more laid back feel.”

?With multi-instrumentalists and several songwriters in the band, the quintet keeps their Americana style variable, always open to showcase their diversity via experimentation and the blurring of genre lines. From the swinging “Peace of Mind,” to the steady wistfulness of “Hurricane Girl” to the lonesome ballad “New York or Memphis,” the EP, says member Ryan Welch, “is lyrically rich and asks the listener to follow the songs into a space of nostalgia.”

ND is pleased to premiere the EP’s closer, “Divided.” A thoughtful folk ballad highlighted by a gentle mandolin, “Divided” finds Adams’ warm yet weathered, and somewhat weary, vocals encouraging one to reflect on what divides us in order to be more united, both in our relations with others and within ourselves. Stream the track in its entirety above.

?Exploring the common ground between heartfelt indie-folk ballads and stomping hootenanny showstoppers characteristic of Americana-grass, Moonsville III is brimming with optimism and love for the simple side of life. READ MORE…

Fairbanks & the Lonesome Light

The brainchild of Erik Flores and Amelia Rose Logan, Fairbanks & The Lonesome Light hail from Austin, Texas and make sprawling country/americana in the style of Gillian Welch, Wilco and Amber Rubarth. On new track “LA Sky” the group demonstrate vocal dexterity and instrumental ingenuity rooted in Flores rock and roll background whilst filling the gap between minimalist folk and heartland harmony. Essentially, “LA Sky” is a triumphant introduction to a cracking bunch of hat wearing foot stompers. READ MORE…

Karen and the Sorrows Interviewed by Billboard

Karen and the Sorrows

“If you had to choose one song to send to aliens in space who were going to destroy the earth — so it has to be something that proves the inherent good of humanity — which song would you pick?”

This question was posed last week by Karen Pittelman, singer/songwriter and leader of Karen & the Sorrows, who are preparing to release their second album, The Narrow Place, on Aug. 25. “Lately I’m thinking ‘As’ by Stevie Wonder,” she muses. “It shows a possibility for the redemption of human beings.”

Pittelman is a walking genre-agnostic musical encyclopedia, and she enjoys these sort of deep dives into pop, exacting about small details and sweeping in scope. During the course of a two-hour conversation — that grows to encompass the racist underpinnings of genre boundaries along with the greatness of, to name a few, Stevie Nicks, Waylon Jennings‘ drummer, songwriter Rod Temperton, guitarist George Benson and producer Quincy Jones — while fighting the din of clattering plates at Four & Twenty Blackbirds, a pie place in Gowanus, Brooklyn, she throws out heaps of these juicy pronouncements:

“I feel like Huey Lewis is under-appreciated. Everyone’s like, ‘he’s so hokey’ — he’s fucking solid.”

Or, “If you can’t fucking choose Nile Rodgers always, then your way of life is no good.”

Or, “The way people freaked out over [Beyoncé’s] ‘Daddy Lessons’ was fascinating — there’s no argument that anybody can make with any credibility to say that’s not a country song. Whatever definition of country you want to use, that fits. Oh, so it has horns? Is ‘Ring of Fire’ not a country song? That’s a bananas argument. Why is there this investment in saying that country music is a white genre?”
