Noisey debuts “Santa Monica” video from Honus Honus

honus honus

What is it about nighttime drives through the city that makes for such cinematically eerie shots? Something about the flickering headlights and blurred passing cars that creates an unsettling sense of paranoia. Ryan Gosling used it to his advantage in Drive, as did Tom Hardy in Locke and DeNiro in Taxi Driver. Now, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who you may know from from 10 Cloverfied Lane and as Ramona Flowers in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, employs it in Honus Honus’ new video for “Santa Monica,” which sees her cruising around one ominous evening.

Honus Honus, a.k.a Ryan Kattner of Man Man, injects his trademark weirdness into “Santa Monica,” his 80s-tinged dark pop jam from his latest solo effort, 2016’s Use Your Delusion. It’s his favorite song on the album, he says, and is “a composite about a couple friends of mine who were letting bad habits take over. It was happening in such small increments to them that they didn’t realize it until a year or two later. By that time, they were almost an entirely different person that I didn’t recognize anymore even though I was around them all the time. They’re good now. Happy ending. You can always pull out of a nose dive. Just don’t go back 15 minutes later for another. Or do.”

So pop this in your 8-track or whatever you’ve got in your Firebird and let it soundtrack your creepy late night drives through streets littered with creepers and your own personal demons. Just make sure you check over your shoulder in the rear-view mirror once in a while. READ MORE

PopMatters premieres new track from Bret Busch

bret busch

Bret Busch has been a vital part of the Atlanta music scene for more than 25 years as a member of various local bands, including Parlour, Pardner, and Ramada and the Hollidays. On his upcoming Pills Lace & Confetti LP releasing July 14th, Busch goes solo blending pop and a bit of soul while working with musicians from Merge Records as well as Janelle Monae’s backing band. Oh, and when this prolific fellow isn’t working on his music, Busch is the lead singer of beloved Smiths tribute band Smithsonian.

“Since I love and have played so many styles over the years, I wasn’t trying to do just one thing with this record,” Busch says. “I didn’t want it to be too crazy, and I wasn’t trying to be too avant-garde. Really, I’m a singer first, and that’s what I wanted to present by doing this project under my name. I wanted to have at least one country-ish song on there (“Where I’m Going”) because I’d done a lot of that with my band Pardner. But, other than that, I really just let my collaborators guide the sound.”

“Ink Black Sea” is the new album’s first single and it’s a catchy toe-tapping pop tune with a killer chorus, punctuated by a bright and energetic horn section. The summery vibe is contagious in this earworm of a tune and it has us looking forward to hearing what other pop tricks Busch may have up his sleeve for the rest of Pills Lace & Confetti.  READ MORE

Flyer News interviews Radnor & Lee

Flyer News Interview

Josh Radnor and Ben Lee’s newest musical endeavor breaks away from the traditional music scene by incorporating meditative, thought provoking lyrics into folk pop songs. Brought together through their love of philosophy and acoustic music, Radnor & Lee are a match made in harmony heaven.

Radnor and Lee have had their fair share of success through their previous projects. Lee started his musical career in the ‘90s Australian alternative-rock band, Noise Addict and has been producing indie-pop music for almost 25 years. Radnor, famously known for playing Ted Mosby on the CBS hit show “How I Met Your Mother,” has spent most of his career acting, directing and screenwriting. READ MORE…

Clrvynt premieres “Careless” by Acid Tongue

Acid Tongue

Clrvynt Premiere

Acid Tongue, who split their time between Seattle, Brooklyn and L.A., find the sweet spot between psych-rock and garage, and ride that wave as far as they can take it. They’re planning to release their new record, Babies, Get Free, sometime in the near future, but until then, they’ve dropped a nice appetizer in the form of their new 7″, from which we’re premiering “Careless” today. It’s a warped eight-minute journey that shows off all the things the band excels at — namely songs with a fair amount of build-up and craziness. It’s a smooth journey that sometimes dips into heaviness, indicating that Acid Tongue could pull off being a doom band if they wanted to take it there. READ MORE…

No Depression reviews “Hustle Up Starlings” by Matthew Ryan

No Depression Review

If John Moreland’s latest album paints in bold scarlets and golds, Matthew Ryan’s Hustle Up Starlings paints on the same canvas but with silver and blues. This is an album for a twilight in the summer, that murky ten minutes between sunset and full dark. If you’re lucky enough to watch the wind rustle through the trees, the sparrows rushing back to their nests, and the bats fluttering out of wherever they come from, then this is the soundtrack for that. (Or, in my case, listening to the train clatter by.) READ MORE…

Surviving the Golden Age premieres “Low (Cracker Cover)” by Sara Rachele

Surviving the Golden Age Premiere

Cracker‘s “Low” is an early 90s classic, mixing folk, angst and rock in one solid mixture. Surviving the Golden Age is excited to premiere americana/indie-folk artist Sara Rachele‘s cover of the track. By slowing the song down, the verses almost sound like Bob Dylan‘s “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” and the crescendoing choruses have a Mazzy Star feel with Rachele’s reverbed vocals. It’s a beautiful cover that has completely different emotions than the original. READ MORE…
