“‘Amy’ is a song about an untainted and unattainable love,” Isa Tineo tells Atwood Magazine. “The song has an honest warmth to it that is very easy to resonate with. “Amy” is a love song for the romantics.” Love songs don’t get more anthemic than this. “Amy” glows with radiant devotion, pulsing with affection as Tineo proclaims his devotion to the light of his life. Such bright emotion is by no means the standard for the New York City-based outfit, whose music typically leans a bit harder on the rock scale than it does here.

Yet what “Amy” shows, above and beyond everything else, is that Beechwood are far from a one-trick pony: They’ve proven themselves a worthwhile rock band, but they are just as good at writing a catchy pop tune. Crossover talent like that has boded very well for bands in the past, and Beechwood should be no exception: If “Amy” is any indication of what’s to come on the band’s new record, then Friday can’t come any sooner!

Glide Magazine gives John Calvin Abney’s new LP Coyote 7 out of 10 stars

If you caught John Moreland on tour any time in 2017, you were treated to a mind-blowing performance from his sideman and sole bandmate, John Calvin Abney. The fellow Oklahoman is a multi-instrumentalist and managed to keep up with the notoriously brisk pace of Moreland’s setlist, switching guitars and jumping on harmonica at lightning speed. It was a performance that likely left many wondering, who the heck is that guy? And it served as an intriguing introduction to Abney’s new solo record, Coyote.

The songs on Coyote are the result of a lot of personal hardship for Abney, and the grounded, serene nature of his soft harmonies feels like the anecdote. Facing down loss, heartbreak, and a major transitional time in his life, Abney creates a driving progression in the melodies of his songs, like an innate need to keep moving forward no matter what. “Always Enough” finds comfort in a simple, stripped down acoustic guitar and piano arrangement with Elliott Smith-like vocals as Abney reflects on the demise of a relationship. His latest album, The Way I Feel, out July 13, follows an extended furlough. After spending time away from music in his art studio, Smyth felt the urge to play again. The result is songs with lyrics and storytelling as colorful, creative, and compelling as Smyth’s abstract expressionism paintings.

His new song “Thunderstorm” is scattered with bluesy steel guitar and piano and layered with harmonies. It’s a moody but relatable track that’s pleasing to the ears.
