Wide Open Country premieres Midnight Larks’ Southern murder-ballad “Summer of the Preacher”

Beyond the less-country-than-Western opening track “Gunfighter,” Midnight Larks’ self-titled debut album is way more rock than roots. But on second listen, one of the fastest driving examples of garage-punk owes a debt of gratitude to Southern folkways.

B-Sides and Badlands Reviews Ross Cooper’s “I Rode the Wild Horses”

“So, it’s been my lot for many years / To have worked for some of the best / Of these men who may be a ‘dying breed’ / yet have not shirked the test,” self-proclaimed “Packsaddle Poet” Chris Isaacs writesabout “The Dying Breed” of cowboys and cattle wranglers in one of his best-known works. Rooted in a life-long career as a working cowboy, a packer, a horseshoer, a day-work cowboy and a rodeo cowboy, Isaacs, three-time winner of the Academy of Western Artists “Will Rogers” Award, approaches storytelling with great discernment, depicting the heart and humor of the cowboy way of life. He then parades his admiration for those “who have not knuckled under / Or sold out to the corporate dragon / Who’ve held the ranch together and still ride out with the wagon.” It’s a teary, sun-parched passage which carries with it tremendous sorrow but hope for tomorrow.

Ross Cooper‘s third record, the ragged and dusty I Rode the Wild Horses, fits quite snugly next to such a refined and perceptive wordsmith. Coincidentally, Cooper was born and bred in a rodeo family himself and spent many years as a bronco rider, and he assembles those experiences into one hearty, western-styled, spitfire record, frequenting open ranges, rodeo corrals and tucked-away honky-tonk bar tops. He’s a son of the road, wearing that distinction in sheepish braggadocio on his jacket. His cowboy hat sits cocked on his head, but he’s not arrogant; he’s simply stating truths as they are. “The old stomping grounds are all stomped out for all the slow-rolling tumbleweeds,” he paints nonchalantly on opener and titular cut, the jangle of drums and guitar clinking in the dust at his feet. Cooper’s illustrations are as easy as they are lush and cinematic, merging traditional, campfire cowboy music, tales of wily temptations, swift heartbreaks and feeble recoveries, with ingenious modernisms. “Heart Attacks” boils savagely, leading into the twinkling neo-traditionalism of “Old Crow Whiskey and a Cornbread Moon,” an earthed gemstone which could have been first chiseled in the late ’80s but lost to time and the fleeting harvests.

The Batt Premieres: Leslie Tom set to perform at Cavalry Court

There’s a Hank Williams fan combining her admiration with songwriting, and it looks like she’s cooking up something good.

Leslie Tom, Class of 1999, is bringing her traditional country sound to College Station. The Denver-based musician will play a free show on March 24 at 8 p.m. at Cavalry Court Court Hotel.

Tom’s latest album, “Ain’t It Something, Hank Williams,” is comprised of four original Hank Williams tunes, as well as six original songs inspired by his life. Tom says her father often played Hank’s music on long car rides, which likely set the first creative stepping stone in Tom’s artistry. “Hank Williams has been a huge influence in my life for as long as I can remember,” Tom said. “I’ve realized as my own career has grown that that influence is instrumental and the foundation of my sound.”

Originally, Tom said, her idea was to first make a Hank Williams-inspired EP and then create a full-length record in 2019. However, as Tom began constructing the album, the songs just kept coming and coming. “I didn’t want to do a record of all covers because it’s really hard to cover someone that is as iconic as Hank Williams,” Tom said. “It just sort of all came together. It wasn’t purposeful when we started out working on this new project, but after we started working we realized we had something pretty special.”

John Macy, Tom’s producer and steel guitar player, is a true fan of her work. As native Texans, Tom and Macy said they have a deep appreciation for true country music that is slowly finding its way back to Nashville.

Pop Matters Premieres Kellen of Troy’s “Just A Couple More”

Nashville-based folk-rocker Kellen Wenrich (Kellen of Troy) is taking a stand alongside the millions rallying around the world during the March For Our Lives. His newest video is a simple construct, featuring white text over a black backdrop, echoing Wenrich’s words one scathing truth after the other on “Just a Couple More”. It’s an evaluation of the times, shining a spotlight on politicians who would rather funnel donations from the NRA and like-minded organizations than campaign for real justice and peace in the light of the United States’ mass shooting epidemic.

Kellen of Troy says, “I wrote ‘Just a Couple More’ in the aftershock of the horrific shooting in Parkland, Florida. My friend Gavin Paddock posed a challenge-to-all-songwriters to write something a-la CSNY’s ‘Ohio’, dealing with gun control (or lack thereof) and the culture surrounding mass shootings in America. I took up the charge, writing and sending him a demo within 72 hours. He called me about 30 minutes later asking how he could help make the song a reality.”

Any and all proceeds from “Just a Couple More” will be donated to the March For Our Lives movement.

Farce The Music Reviews: Great Peacock / Gran Pavo Real

When I first heard Great Peacock’s EP a few years ago, it felt like it was the beginning of something special – an inside peek at the beginning of the rise of an obscure band.  5 years later, and it still feels that way when I hear a new Great Peacock offering.  The band’s sophomore album is no different as the band takes a slight turn away from the gentle, melodic Americana and more towards the psychedelic, Americana-tinged rock.
The last output, their great Making Ghosts album, was everything we had been promised from their self-titled EP.  It was a melodic outpouring of yearning tunes with Blount Floyd and Andrew Nelson’s voices working perfectly together.  The band toured restlessly off that album, coming to DC at least 4 times, I believe, during that time.  Around the last couple of times the guys came through, you could hear something shift in their music.  There were 2 acoustic guitars on stage, then there was one acoustic and one electric, then there were only electric guitars.  The songs began to shift sonically and jam a little more.
On Gran Pavo Real, those new sounds are apparent with the opening organ-heavy jam of “Hideaway.”  The harmonies of Floyd and Nelson are still there and the heartbreak-driven tunes are still there, but there is a shift in the tone towards a Pneumonia-era Whiskeytown.  But, never to fear, there are still hints of the old Great Peacock there – “Begging to Stay” and “Miss You Honey” being the two most akin to their previous album.
