James Houlahan shares playlist with B-Sides and Badlands

James Houlihan

“It’s the end of the world as we know it,” trail-blazing rock band R.E.M. once sang on their Document record. Little would they know that the world would go up in flames 30 years later ? in near post-apocalyptic proportions. A president clings to his Twitter page with all he’s got, and California is on the brink of burning to the ground completely. Ash clouds grow thicker by the day. But we continue to soldier on, turning to art and music to make us feel as fine as we can possibly be. Americana singer-songwriter James Houlahan drifts in and out of smothering smoke storms and fiery flakes that lick his heels with his brand new record, The Wheel Still in Spin, a deftly-constructed collection which glides between states of being with surprising ease.

Around the release, and as an exclusive to B-Sides & Badlands, Houlahan drafts a playlist of songs ripe for the end of the world, the very last state of being for all of us, you could say. From Leonard Cohen and Father John Misty to Wilco and Lucinda Williams, he touches on the breadth of Americana music and the sturdy, but tragic, American way of living with a playlist to get us through the tough times of this so-called life. The playlist also features Jolie Holland, The Low Anthem and Sunny War, among others….READ MORE

The Wild Honey Pie features Rainstorm Brother on ‘Buzzing Daily’

The Wild Honey Pie features Rainstorm Brother on ‘Buzzing Daily’

John Isaac Watters, the vocalist of Rainstorm Brother, used to work as an architect. When listening to the careful arrangement of “Fire You Light,” the second track on the folk-rock duo’s new EP, Part One, it’s easy to understand why. His vocals are a little bitThe National, a little bit Modest Mouse and a lot of vibrato, acting as the foundation around which all the other instrumental sounds are built. READ MORE…

Dominique Pruitt’s “High In The Valley” is featured on EarToTheGrounds recent round up feature

This is one of the most impressive lyrical tracks I’ve heard all year. The opening line is an absolute stunner and the imagery doesn’t stop there. From irony to just outright cleverness, it’s about the depths of sin and human identity but doesn’t feel preachy at all. In fact, it’s not a sermon at all, but it’ll teach you a lot about how to live your life. The Americana pseudo-throwback style is the perfect vehicle for it, too…..READ MORE

Glide Magazine premieres Charles Wesley Goodwin’s new single “Shrinks and Pills”

West Virginia is far more than meets the eye. A native of Morgantown, singer-songwriter Charles Wesley Godwin paints a rich and honest portrayal of his homeland and its people with his debut album. Seneca is a moving snapshot of his 26 years of life and well-soiled roots in the Appalachian hills, a backdrop that has given birth to some of the most intelligent and hard-working people in the country.

When you partake in his gripping storytelling, it comes as no surprise that Godwin’s shared bills with the likes of Shooter Jennings, Tyler Childers, Colter Wall, Luke Combs, Aaron Watson, David Allan Coe, Sundy Best, Waymore’s Outlaws and Nicholas Jamerson. Godwin is truly at home on stage and alongside like-minded musicians who go against the grain and shake up the status quo.

“This album will give people a really good look into what it’s like culturally in Appalachia. People have a way-off view from the outside of what we’re all about, what our priorities are and how smart we are,” says Godwin. The record is steeped to perfection in gentle mountain streams and a way of living that is surprisingly universal. Through earnest, sinewy craftsmanship, he mitigates the stereotypes that plague the state and reconfigures expectations.

Another essential piece of his story, “Shrinks and Pills” exhibits a dry, sly humor and sees Godwin lament the roar of the open road in his ears and an unquenchable homesickness wedged deep in his bones. He misses the comfort of his homestead, but he wouldn’t have it any other way–heartache be damned. “Hardwood Floors” dazzles in the dim light of a local pub as he shares a tender embrace with his wife amidst the ho-hum of the crowd…..READ MORE

Rock the Pigeon does great feature on The Deep Hollow’s new LP “Weary Traveler”

The Deep Hollow
The Deep Hollow is out with a new record titled “Weary Traveler” which allows the listener to have a walk in the bands shoes through songwriting topics like getting older, the search for stability, and endless traveling. We want to shine some light on their last song from their sophomore record called “Misplaced Love”, a track driven by acoustic instrumentation and soothing vocal harmonies. The track comes across as a hauntingly beautiful and slightly melancholy testimony about losing love and the sorrow of having to move on. The trio is made up of Micah Walk, Liz Eckert and Dave Littrell who share and trade songwriting credits and seem to blend magically together musically. Each member has something brilliant to add to the songwriting or instrumentation to create songs that tell adventurous stories. Enjoy The Deep Hollow’s sophomore record, recently released on November 9th, on Spotify….READ MORE
