California Sounds: Thundercat gets chopped and screwed, Quitapenas honors migrant workers and Charlie Overbey celebrates Eddie Spaghetti

Charlie Overbey
Charlie Overbey

Charlie Overbey, “The Ballad of Eddie Spaghetti” (self-released). Lifelong Angeleno Overbey named his last record “California Kid,” so he’s not concerned with hiding his western roots. An artist who has sweated the L.A. country rock and punk scenes for two decades, he’s maneuvered through bands including Big Bang Babies and Custom Made Scare — and a stint in prison — while working behind the scenes as a booking agent.

His forthcoming album, “Broken Arrow,” will arrive in April, and he’s been teasing it with a few prerelease songs. “The Ballad of Eddie Spaghetti” is about the singer and guitarist for the twang-punk band the Supersuckers, who was diagnosed with throat cancer a few years ago.

Written as a kind of last will and testament, Overbey inhabits his friend’s psyche to celebrate his life with thrilling glee. “If I die at 47, if I die before my time / Would they drag me up to heaven or drive me off to hell in my prime?” (The good news is that Spaghetti was declared cancer-free eight months after being diagnosed.)

Another forthcoming song, “Echo Park,” rolls with rock ‘n’ roll momentum suggestive of the E Street Band, if Bruce Springsteen were singing about lost love not in Asbury but Echo Park.

Oklahoma singer-songwriter John Calvin Abney announces new LP Coyote at Glide Magazine

john calvin abney coyote

For the past decade, John Calvin Abney has made a name for himself as a solo artist and sought-after sideman. He’s toured as lead guitarist for fellow Oklahoman John Moreland, recording with him on his last two acclaimed albums, and in between, the prolific Abney found time to add another impressive record to his own catalog (2016’s Far Cries And Close Calls), supporting the release with a run of solo shows during a whirlwind year filled with as much struggle as success. Abney’s new full-length, Coyote, out May 18 on Black Mesa Records, draws from this tumultuous time, fearlessly staring down distance, isolation and fading love, as well as loss, fear and disassociation from the self.

Working on Coyote with ace musicians Shonna Tucker (ex-Drive-By Truckers) on bass, Megan Palmer on keyboards and violin, and Paddy Ryan on drums, Abney crafted ten songs of unwavering beauty and insight, marrying languorous soundscapes to bittersweet reflections on losing what matters most, and the kind of resilience necessary to come out whole on the other side.

While Abney took his time writing Coyote, the recording process at Fellowship Hall Sound in Little Rock, Ark., was an intense three-day sprint—which is the way Abney prefers it. “I like to work fast so I don’t second-guess anything,” he says. Despite the rapid-fire sessions, Coyote boasts thoughtful arrangements—featuring Abney on piano, organ, guitar and pedal steel—that put his gorgeous melodies and heartfelt lyrics front and center. His association with Moreland might have fans expecting something akin to Americana, but the new record isn’t so easily hemmed into that genre, venturing frequently into sounds that are more dreamy and melancholy. We All Want Someone to Shout For premieres “Heroin Honey” by Beechwood

Beechwood are a New York trio who you may remember were a part of a pretty big news story last summer.

Last year Burger Records released a tape of their new album Songs From The Land of Nod and now the album has a 2018 release via Alive Naturalsound Records.

My introduction to the band came with the lush track “Heroin Honey,” which floats around some old-school pop vibes mixed with the lo-fi charm of say early Smith Westerns. READ MORE…

Elijah Ocean Penned This Folky Hit in a Las Vegas Hotel Room

Elijah Ocean
Elijah Ocean

“Down This Road“ by Elijah Ocean is a hooky classic-rock/singer-songwriter style ballad about the journey of life and traveling. This song took Elijah years to write as he took many breaks when penning it. He finished the song is a Las Vegas Hotel room in November of 2017. The production of the guitars and the vocal delivery is reminiscent of Tom Petty’s “I Wont Back Down“ and the classic song “Free Fallin’” as well as other classic rock hits. It blends right in to the classic songs released in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. The song is refreshing as you can tell all the instrumentation are live instruments. Elijah Ocean puts back the emotion in modern music with this track.

Ross Cooper, ‘Old Crow Whiskey and a Cornbread Moon’ [EXCLUSIVE PREMIERE]

Ross Cooper
Ross Cooper

Country artist and former professional cowboy Ross Cooper is premiering his song “Old Crow Whiskey and a Cornbread Moon” exclusively for readers of The Boot.

“Old Crow Whiskey and a Cornbread Moon” is a smooth, classic country ballad that explores blue-collar America and gratitude. “In short, “Old Crow Whiskey and a Cornbread Moon” is about being appreciative for what you have,” Cooper tells The Boot. “About being thankful even when things may not be going your way. Celebrating what you do have instead of worrying about what you don’t, and realizing that it doesn’t take much to be happy.”

When asked about his influences for this new tune, Cooper cites the farmers and ranchers from his home state of Texas: “For me, it’s a tip of the hat to all the ranchers and farmers back home,” he says.

“They are people that break their backs day in and day out to put food on the table. They don’t want for anything and don’t ask for it if they do,” Cooper adds. “That image kind of stayed in my head while we wrote this song.”

To fine tune the sound for “Old Crow Whiskey and a Cornbread Moon,” Cooper enlisted fellow Texan Paul Cauthen to work out the strum pattern and flesh out the lyrics. Cooper had written the song’s first verse and chorus about a month before their co-write, then shelved the song.

“I think he saw exactly what I wanted the song to be,” Cooper says of Cauthen. “It was a blast to write and was simple to finish. It’s one of my favorite songs that I’ve written, and it almost never happened.”

“Old Crow Whiskey and a Cornbread Moon” is Cooper’s latest single, and will appear on his forthcoming album I Rode the Wild Horses.

Austin Chronicle features Abhi the Nomad

“Nothing’s been consistent in my life except my family and my music,” reveals Abhi Sridharan Vaidehi, the 23-year-old rapper/singer better known as Abhi the Nomad. “Music’s been the only thing I can rely on because I never know where I’m gonna be.”

The son of an Indian diplomat, Vaidehi grew up in a whirlwind of state-sponsored emigration, largely growing up in China, India, and the Fiji islands, before attending college in Southern California. Much of his last year was spent in Lille, France, prior to copping a new student visa and moving to Austin in August.

“There’s a whole culture of young people out there in the same situation,” he explains in a voice betraying no detectable accent. “They call them ‘third-culture kids,’ born in their home country, but living that expatriate life where they’re in other nations most of their lives. There’s pain in leaving places where you built ties, but then you numb yourself to that and become really good at adapting.”

The most remarkable facet of his own cultural adaptation is a prowess in the American-born art form of hip-hop. Since 2014, he’s released an impressive run of tracks melding witty, passionate bars with inspired pop that ultimately fall into a category with Childish Gambino and Chance the Rapper. His flow’s agile and modern, but what sets ATN’s material apart is his gift for writing outstanding hooks. The singer/guitarist could be selling choruses to pop stars if he so desired.

This month signaled the release of new album Marbled on genre staple Tommy Boy Entertainment. It’s an emotionally heavy album centered around making difficult personal changes while finding acceptance.

“I created my own definition of the word ‘marbled,'” he explains of the 12-track set he recorded while getting sober. “Being marbled is having your stripes, your flaws, but carrying them with you, growing beyond regrets, and coming to accept that you have to move forward to become less marbled.”

No rapper in Austin is getting streamed more than Abhi the Nomad. Silky single “Sex n’ Drugs” already pushes an extraordinary 2.4 million plays on Spotify. Still, Vaidehi freely admits his “internet clout” doesn’t change the fact that he’s starting from the bottom on the local scene – a familiar feeling for a nomad.

Last Friday dropped a South by Southwest warm-up of sorts via his first Austin show, a late-night performance at Eastside lounge Dozen Street. Fifty people showed, many of whom – to the rapper’s surprise – knew his lyrics. The new townie showcased disarming wit, a great voice, and charismatic stage presence, all of which covered up for a few lyrical lapses. A line from “Mama Bling,” about eschewing materialism for soulfulness, captured his essence: “Tell me where the music we can feel to? Where the groove we could love, hate, cry, and relate to?”

How long the Nomad remains in Austin – and the U.S., for that matter – hinges on the Department of Homeland Security. To stay beyond his graphic design studies at Austin Community College, he needs an O-1 Visa, meaning he has to demonstrate an “extraordinary ability or achievement” in the arts. They have only to hear Marbled. READ MORE…
