Cowboys and Indians premiere a “first listen” for Dallas Moore’s Mr. Honky Tonk

"honky tonk" "Dallas Moore" "Austin" "Texas" "Outlaw music"

Dallas Moore’s new album, Mr. Honky Tonk, is filled with songs about hometowns, drinkin’, and heartbreak — a full-blooded American country compilation definitely worth a listen.

Produced by Dean Miller — he’s worked with Chris Stapleton, Alison Krauss, and Merle Haggard — and backed by a plethora of master performers (including harmonica legend Mickey Raphael, famed Nashville session bassist Michael Rhodes, and pedal-steel pro Steve Hinson), the LP stems from the creative writing mind of outlaw troubadour Moore.

An award-winning songwriter of No. 1 hits like “Texas Tornado,” “Crazy Again,” and “Blessed Be the Bad Ones,” Moore does most of his writing out on the open road.

“I do the vast majority of my writing while I’m out riding my Harley-Davidson Road King,” Moore says. “When I’m alone on a long ride, it’s really the only time I’m free to let my mind open up and wander. The lyrics and melodies seem to come out of the wind and into my mind.”

When he reaches his destination, Moore says, he’ll pick up a guitar and flesh out the music.

“I write from both personal experiences and observations I make while out on the road,” he says. “I’ve never been able to sit down and write in a certain time frame or controlled environment. It always seems to come from out of nowhere and happen organically — I can’t force it. I reckon it’s different for everybody, but that’s what works for me.”

Moore and his band recently received the Outlaw Group of the Year award at the Ameripolitan Music Awards, in Austin, Texas. It was their fourth time being nominated for the Ameripolitans, which highlight the best in outlaw country, Western swing, honky-tonk, and rockabilly music.

The 405 premieres “Ocean Love” by DEGA

“Love will keep us together” was preached by Captain & Tennille (before being inverted by Ian Curtis), but being apart might have given husband-and-wife synth-pop duo Kalen and Aslyn Nash, aka DEGA, renewed romantic zest. Their new song ‘Ocean Love’ is a lush ballad, like Beach House, if they actually had a coastal focus. Inspired by their honeymoon to Jamaica, it connects love and longing for beatific paradise with that for your significant other. Aslyn’s voice shines proudly in her yearning against swirling synths and deep bass. It’s a song that will make you daydream about experiences you haven’t had, but feel incredibly personal nonetheless. READ MORE…

The Jamie McLean Band Premieres New Album, ‘One and Only’

Jamie McLean Band
Jamie McLean Band

Between his time as a guitarist for New Orleans’ legendary Aaron Neville and Dirty Dozen Brass Band, and his time with his solo band—who have shared the stage with Gregg Allman, Dr. John, Taj Mahal, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Trombone Shorty, Los Lobos and Govt. Mule, to name a few—Jamie McLean has soaked up quite a bit of America’s musical DNA. This experience is obvious in his new album with the Jamie McLean Band, One and Only, which is streaming now on GuitarWorld.com.

The soulful, self-assured LP was produced by Wilco’s Ken Coomer at the Sound Emporium in Nashville and features contributions from Sam Bush and Jeff Coffin of the Dave Matthews Band.

McLean provides a fascinating cross-section of sounds on One and Only. His songs merge the yearning and romanticism of Tom Petty, the air-tight instrumental proficiency of Nashville and the rugged independent streak of alt-country. You can hear the whole wonderful cocktail below.

McLean and his band—which also features Brian Griffin on drums and Ben Mars on bass—are currently on the road to support One and Only.

SONG PREMIERE: CHARLIE OVERBEY’S “SHAME” MATCHES PUNK FLAIR WITH RIGHTEOUS STORYTELLING

Charlie Overbey
Charlie Overbey

Charlie Overbey may be a lifelong Californian, but his songs are steeped in the timeless traditions of the American South. After years of touring the world supporting acts ranging from David Allan Coe and Blackberry Smoke to Social Distortion and Motorhead, Overbey slowly amassed a collection of introspective original songs that transcend the endless rock & roll party, taking a stark, undeniably honest look at some of life’s most gritty moments. The result is Charlie Overbey’s new LP, Broken Arrow.

A triumphant collection of road-hardened alt-country tunes born of Overbey’s upbringing in what he calls “the school and church of Johnny Cash,” Broken Arrow features guest appearances from The Mastersons (who also play in Steve Earle’s band The Dukes), Miranda Lee Richards (who sings on duet single “Slip Away”) and Eddie Spaghetti of the Supersuckers, and was produced by Ted Hutt who recently won a Grammy for his work with Old Crow Medicine Show, and has helmed multiple albums by Lucero, The Gaslight Anthem, Dropkick Murphys and many more.

“I’ve never worked with anybody like Ted,” Overbey says, reflecting on the sessions. “This is the first time I’ve ever let go and trusted somebody else as a partner in my songs. He really pulled some stuff out of me that I had not planned on delivering. Honestly, these songs can be hard for me to sing—they come from a deep, real and sometimes dark place.”

Ross Cooper Premieres New Song “All She Wrote” on No Depression

Ross Cooper
Ross Cooper

Former professional bareback rider Ross Cooper is prepping the release his debut album, I Rode The Wild Horses, on March 9th. Produced by Eric Masse (Miranda Lambert, Rayland Baxter), I Rode The Wild Horses features contributions from Erin Rae on vocals, Jeremy Fetzer of Steelism on guitar, Eli Beard on bass, Tommy Perkinson on drums, Skylar Wilson on keys, and Eddy Dunlap on pedal steel. Today, Cooper shares another track from the forthcoming record entitled, “All She Wrote.” Penned by Cooper and Benjy Davis, the layered and airy, yet somber,  “All She Wrote” strikes a chord, as it reminds us of the importance of not taking the people in our lives for granted lest we lose them forever.

Cooper relays the story behind the song, “That morning I left the house for our write and my girlfriend had left me a really nice and sweet note.  A positive affirmation.  I was running a little behind, and she leaves a lot of notes like that for me, so I just kind of put it in my pocket and carried on. I remembered it when I was pulling into the parking lot and took it out and read it.  It made me feel really lucky for what I had.  When we sat down to write, I couldn’t help but think, “What if that note that I’d shoved in my pocket hadn’t been a good one?” and that was the idea for the song.  It wasn’t so much a retelling of what happened, but a reflection of what could happen if you don’t take care of the ones you love.”

“If you ever loved me, let me go/Well, I read it about a thousand times or so/No second chances/No X’s no O’s/No maybe baby hold out for hope/And that was all she wrote.”

REVIEW: Kellen of Troy’s “Posthumous Release” is Very Much Alive

Kellen of Troy
Kellen of Troy

Kellen of Troy’s Posthumous Release (Baby Robot Media) is full of tongue-in-cheek eclecticism and variety. Front man Kellen Wenrich, formerly the fiddle player in Apache Relay, launched this, his solo debut, on Friday February 16.

“Rule Your Heart” features immediately catchy rhythms and violin over wry lyrics like “all alone on the American throne without you as my first lady.”   “So You Found Yourself A Rockstar” is a throwback to the California of the Beach Boys, with pop rhythms and collective backing vocals.

“Great Heartbreaker” will be the centerpiece of this album for Americana fans with its country guitar and banjo, while Kellen sings “she’s a great heartbreaker” and the lyrics become more emotionally direct. And then there is the title track, which is placed at number nine in the set list, and continues to exhibit Kellen’s more sorrowful offerings: “in lieu of any flowers try to give your love away.” The song “it’s so much worse” “When You Don’t Hear Good-bye” again expresses more genuine anguish with its slower tempo and piano melodies. Overall the songs on the album wax satirical, effectively shaking you up from any thought of dwelling dramatically on lost love.

Kellen of Troy’s album maintains a lively juxtaposition of the flippant and frivolous way we handle life’s deeper challenges.
