Paste features MERCH’s new video for “Don’t Wait Too Long”

“My aim is to release records that will sound good today, tomorrow and 50 years from now,” says Joe Medina, the singer, songwriter, composer & guitarist behind MERCH. His latest LP, Amour Bohemian, is an immense project featuring contributions from 65 different artists, including the 30-piece Prague FILMharmonic, who have collaborated with everyone from Werner Herzog & Quentin Tarantino to the Arcade Fire, Joanna Newsom and Adele. Members of The Growlers & The Blank Tapes are also featured on the album, which Oh Sees’ John Dwyer is already calling “a masterpiece.”

A densely layered, wildly ambitious record rooted in Medina’s love of vintage film soundtracks, Scott Walker & Lee Hazlewood, Amour Bohemian’s cinematic sound is a brilliant fusion of classic pop, psych & garage that’s peppered with reverent nods to the old-school crooners, Mexican ranchero, French chanson and ‘30s big-band jazz. Medina shrieks and howls like a descendant of The Mothers of Invention and croons like Leonard Cohen, evoking a serendipitous combination of love and estrangement.

The album’s frenetic opening track, “Don’t Wait Too Long”—with its dramatic orchestral flourishes, massive dynamic shifts and shamanistic urgency—finds Medina celebrating the bohemian single life and lamenting a troubled, baggage-laden past while frantically crying out in pursuit of a rare and genuine love. The wonderfully campy accompanying visuals, filmed in Anza-Borrego Desert during the Superbloom, capture Medina in the midst of what appears to be a manic peyote-inspired neo-noir desert freak-out. The delirious, hazy images channel P.T. Anderson’s Inherent Vice with its dream-sequence vibe, sprawling neon colors and dark silhouettes.

Don’t miss out on Medina’s Amour Bohemian, in its entire splendor, out November 3rd. READ MORE…

Earbuddy premieres Sara Rachele’s rendition of Bobby Helms’ classic, “April Fool”

On November 10th, indie folk musician Sara Rachele will release her sophomore album, April Fool. The album is a nine-track collection of atmospheric indie-Americana songs propelled by sparse instrumentation, keeping the focus on Rachele’s haunting Southern croon. On the album, you’ll hear Rachele’s renditions of classic songs, including the album’s title track, “April Fool”, originally performed by John Lilly. Rachele puts her own spin on the classic song by giving it a modern edge while maintaining a vintage aura. Listen to “April Fool” via our premiere below.

Sara Rachele on the song:

I heard “April Fool” for the first time around a campfire in East Nashville, TN. There was a picking party going on. It was quite late and the party started to die down. One of the gentlemen by the fire was playing some of the most special tunes I’d heard in a long while. I found out later his name was John Lilly, hailing from West Virginia, and he was playing a few songs he’d written about the different states he’d been to on the road over the years. Idaho was my favorite. Anyway, as we sat fireside, I heard “April fool,” his very first cut as a songwriter (sung by Bobby Helms), and just thought to myself—what a fine song. I felt the need to sing it.

I just thought it was so dang sad, and so sweet, with such a simple turn of phrase, and love passing like the seasons. This album is about the songs that speak to me as a recording artist. They’re all very engrained in something spiritual, basic, awful and gut-driven, and I’m obsessed with chasing these kinds of songs. I had “April Fool” in my heart and my mind for days after hearing it. It got real late, and John sang lullabies early into that Nashville morning. As the embers cooled, I remember him saying, “I’d like to play one more song.” That kind of dedication made me think, “Man, that’s a real songwriter.” That one evening became the epitome of what Nashville could be for me: Spontaneous, musical and unique.

Incidentally, that late night bonfire session took place in late March, when I heard that song, and my relationship at the time ended pretty soon after. As a matter of fact, it ended April the first. That tune, had such a timeless effect on me—it’s magic! I don’t know if John has ever heard our version, but I hope wherever he is, he’ll soon know how thankful I am to have met him, and for a tune like that one. READ MORE…

PopMatters premieres Wax Fang’s new single, “Glass Island”

Louisville, Kentucky’s Wax Fang returns with a track to give you the shivers. Built on an eerie, hip-hop-ish rhythms, psychedelic-cum-horror rock keyboard figures and a devastatingly beautiful vocal take from Lacey Guthrie (Twin Limb), “Glass Island” bursts into a deep-cutting, prog-influenced ecstasy that’ll leave listeners marveling at the ease with which this quartet moves between these disparate spheres.

Lead vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Scott Carney offered insights into the track’s genesis and evolution:  “Our former bassist Jacob Heustis was listening to a lot of hip-hop and had made some tracks on this weird machine called a Roland D-2,” Carney recalls. “It’s this pre-iPhone era touchscreen music production thing. It was completely unintuitive to use, but somehow he figured it out. He produced what would become the backbeat and the two main synth lines of ‘Glass Island’ on that thing.”

The song came along fine but with time Carney began to suspect it was missing something. “After we mixed it the first time,” he says, “I began to second guess myself because I’d originally sung the first half of the song in a falsetto, but the melody, combined with the key we put it in to accommodate the second half, forced me to use the lowest range my falsetto. We decided to have someone else sing it. As big fans of Twin Limb, we reached out to Lacey. Her voice is amazing. She came in and she just killed it.”

The vocalist adds that the piece challenged him in some unexpected ways. “I had an idea to introduce a rock element halfway through and to end it with a ridiculously long guitar solo,” he remembers. “The vocals, melody, and lyrics came easy. The solo took some time. We knew it had to be strong because it was the entire length of a verse and a chorus. It took Corey and me several sessions of sitting down, playing around, and coming back to it until it felt interesting from start to finish.” READ MORE…

Oginalii exclusive EP premiere via Glide Magazine

“Oginalii is a Nashville-based rock band with a dense sound that’s impossible to pin down.  One minute they’re psychedelically lulling you into a druggy head-bob, and the next they’re ripping sludge rock, making you want to throw a beer can and light a cigarette in a dimly lit basement.”… READ MORE
