Whenever John Calvin Abney needed to step away from life and think, he would cross the street from his old house on Tulsa’s S. Yale Avenue and visit the historic Route 66 diner Tally’s Good Food Cafe.

The classic ’50s-themed diner is a far cry from a peacefully quiet coffee shop. The booze-serving, 24-hour establishment is popular among locals and Route 66 tourists alike. Tally’s is not the place most other people would pick to focus, but it was conveniently located, and perhaps Abney is the kind of person who subconsciously needs things to be just a little hectic. A longtime sideman for many and the touring guitarist for Moreland, Abney has been chipping out time to work on his own material here and there, first with 2016’s ‘Far Cries and Close Calls’ and now with ‘Coyote.’ It is an album that shows major growth sonically in just the two short years that have passed between releases. The Young Folks sits down with Violet Delancey to talk about her new single “Eloise”

Violet Delancey first appeared on the scene in 2016 as a country/folk artist with her well-received debut, When the Clock Strikes Midnight. Her latest album, Columbia Road, available May 25, is a huge stylistic departure that sees Delancey rebranding herself as an “Americana-tinged dream pop singer-songwriter.” Produced by Andy LeMaster (R.E.M., Bright Eyes, Azure Ray) in Athens, Ga., Columbia Road has Delancey drawing inspiration from Kate Bush and Emmylou Harris.

Those influences are apparent, especially in Delancey’s new single, “Eloise,” which feels in a lot of ways like it’s straight out of a ‘80s Kate Bush fever dream. Delancey’s vocals fit nicely in with this genre change; the lyrics meander along backed by soft percussion and guitar, lulling the listener into the hazy, ethereal world her and LeMaster have created.
