Elijah Ocean Penned This Folky Hit in a Las Vegas Hotel Room

Elijah Ocean
Elijah Ocean

“Down This Road“ by Elijah Ocean is a hooky classic-rock/singer-songwriter style ballad about the journey of life and traveling. This song took Elijah years to write as he took many breaks when penning it. He finished the song is a Las Vegas Hotel room in November of 2017. The production of the guitars and the vocal delivery is reminiscent of Tom Petty’s “I Wont Back Down“ and the classic song “Free Fallin’” as well as other classic rock hits. It blends right in to the classic songs released in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. The song is refreshing as you can tell all the instrumentation are live instruments. Elijah Ocean puts back the emotion in modern music with this track.

Ross Cooper, ‘Old Crow Whiskey and a Cornbread Moon’ [EXCLUSIVE PREMIERE]

Ross Cooper

Country artist and former professional cowboy Ross Cooper is premiering his song “Old Crow Whiskey and a Cornbread Moon” exclusively for readers of The Boot.

“Old Crow Whiskey and a Cornbread Moon” is a smooth, classic country ballad that explores blue-collar America and gratitude. “In short, “Old Crow Whiskey and a Cornbread Moon” is about being appreciative for what you have,” Cooper tells The Boot. “About being thankful even when things may not be going your way. Celebrating what you do have instead of worrying about what you don’t, and realizing that it doesn’t take much to be happy.”

When asked about his influences for this new tune, Cooper cites the farmers and ranchers from his home state of Texas: “For me, it’s a tip of the hat to all the ranchers and farmers back home,” he says.

“They are people that break their backs day in and day out to put food on the table. They don’t want for anything and don’t ask for it if they do,” Cooper adds. “That image kind of stayed in my head while we wrote this song.”

To fine tune the sound for “Old Crow Whiskey and a Cornbread Moon,” Cooper enlisted fellow Texan Paul Cauthen to work out the strum pattern and flesh out the lyrics. Cooper had written the song’s first verse and chorus about a month before their co-write, then shelved the song.

“I think he saw exactly what I wanted the song to be,” Cooper says of Cauthen. “It was a blast to write and was simple to finish. It’s one of my favorite songs that I’ve written, and it almost never happened.”

“Old Crow Whiskey and a Cornbread Moon” is Cooper’s latest single, and will appear on his forthcoming album I Rode the Wild Horses.

Austin Chronicle features Abhi the Nomad

“Nothing’s been consistent in my life except my family and my music,” reveals Abhi Sridharan Vaidehi, the 23-year-old rapper/singer better known as Abhi the Nomad. “Music’s been the only thing I can rely on because I never know where I’m gonna be.”

The son of an Indian diplomat, Vaidehi grew up in a whirlwind of state-sponsored emigration, largely growing up in China, India, and the Fiji islands, before attending college in Southern California. Much of his last year was spent in Lille, France, prior to copping a new student visa and moving to Austin in August.

“There’s a whole culture of young people out there in the same situation,” he explains in a voice betraying no detectable accent. “They call them ‘third-culture kids,’ born in their home country, but living that expatriate life where they’re in other nations most of their lives. There’s pain in leaving places where you built ties, but then you numb yourself to that and become really good at adapting.”

The most remarkable facet of his own cultural adaptation is a prowess in the American-born art form of hip-hop. Since 2014, he’s released an impressive run of tracks melding witty, passionate bars with inspired pop that ultimately fall into a category with Childish Gambino and Chance the Rapper. His flow’s agile and modern, but what sets ATN’s material apart is his gift for writing outstanding hooks. The singer/guitarist could be selling choruses to pop stars if he so desired.

This month signaled the release of new album Marbled on genre staple Tommy Boy Entertainment. It’s an emotionally heavy album centered around making difficult personal changes while finding acceptance.

“I created my own definition of the word ‘marbled,'” he explains of the 12-track set he recorded while getting sober. “Being marbled is having your stripes, your flaws, but carrying them with you, growing beyond regrets, and coming to accept that you have to move forward to become less marbled.”

No rapper in Austin is getting streamed more than Abhi the Nomad. Silky single “Sex n’ Drugs” already pushes an extraordinary 2.4 million plays on Spotify. Still, Vaidehi freely admits his “internet clout” doesn’t change the fact that he’s starting from the bottom on the local scene – a familiar feeling for a nomad.

Last Friday dropped a South by Southwest warm-up of sorts via his first Austin show, a late-night performance at Eastside lounge Dozen Street. Fifty people showed, many of whom – to the rapper’s surprise – knew his lyrics. The new townie showcased disarming wit, a great voice, and charismatic stage presence, all of which covered up for a few lyrical lapses. A line from “Mama Bling,” about eschewing materialism for soulfulness, captured his essence: “Tell me where the music we can feel to? Where the groove we could love, hate, cry, and relate to?”

How long the Nomad remains in Austin – and the U.S., for that matter – hinges on the Department of Homeland Security. To stay beyond his graphic design studies at Austin Community College, he needs an O-1 Visa, meaning he has to demonstrate an “extraordinary ability or achievement” in the arts. They have only to hear Marbled. READ MORE…

Cowboys and Indians premiere a “first listen” for Dallas Moore’s Mr. Honky Tonk

"honky tonk" "Dallas Moore" "Austin" "Texas" "Outlaw music"

Dallas Moore’s new album, Mr. Honky Tonk, is filled with songs about hometowns, drinkin’, and heartbreak — a full-blooded American country compilation definitely worth a listen.

Produced by Dean Miller — he’s worked with Chris Stapleton, Alison Krauss, and Merle Haggard — and backed by a plethora of master performers (including harmonica legend Mickey Raphael, famed Nashville session bassist Michael Rhodes, and pedal-steel pro Steve Hinson), the LP stems from the creative writing mind of outlaw troubadour Moore.

An award-winning songwriter of No. 1 hits like “Texas Tornado,” “Crazy Again,” and “Blessed Be the Bad Ones,” Moore does most of his writing out on the open road.

“I do the vast majority of my writing while I’m out riding my Harley-Davidson Road King,” Moore says. “When I’m alone on a long ride, it’s really the only time I’m free to let my mind open up and wander. The lyrics and melodies seem to come out of the wind and into my mind.”

When he reaches his destination, Moore says, he’ll pick up a guitar and flesh out the music.

“I write from both personal experiences and observations I make while out on the road,” he says. “I’ve never been able to sit down and write in a certain time frame or controlled environment. It always seems to come from out of nowhere and happen organically — I can’t force it. I reckon it’s different for everybody, but that’s what works for me.”

Moore and his band recently received the Outlaw Group of the Year award at the Ameripolitan Music Awards, in Austin, Texas. It was their fourth time being nominated for the Ameripolitans, which highlight the best in outlaw country, Western swing, honky-tonk, and rockabilly music.

The 405 premieres “Ocean Love” by DEGA

“Love will keep us together” was preached by Captain & Tennille (before being inverted by Ian Curtis), but being apart might have given husband-and-wife synth-pop duo Kalen and Aslyn Nash, aka DEGA, renewed romantic zest. Their new song ‘Ocean Love’ is a lush ballad, like Beach House, if they actually had a coastal focus. Inspired by their honeymoon to Jamaica, it connects love and longing for beatific paradise with that for your significant other. Aslyn’s voice shines proudly in her yearning against swirling synths and deep bass. It’s a song that will make you daydream about experiences you haven’t had, but feel incredibly personal nonetheless. READ MORE…

The Jamie McLean Band Premieres New Album, ‘One and Only’

Jamie McLean Band
Jamie McLean Band

Between his time as a guitarist for New Orleans’ legendary Aaron Neville and Dirty Dozen Brass Band, and his time with his solo band—who have shared the stage with Gregg Allman, Dr. John, Taj Mahal, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Trombone Shorty, Los Lobos and Govt. Mule, to name a few—Jamie McLean has soaked up quite a bit of America’s musical DNA. This experience is obvious in his new album with the Jamie McLean Band, One and Only, which is streaming now on GuitarWorld.com.

The soulful, self-assured LP was produced by Wilco’s Ken Coomer at the Sound Emporium in Nashville and features contributions from Sam Bush and Jeff Coffin of the Dave Matthews Band.

McLean provides a fascinating cross-section of sounds on One and Only. His songs merge the yearning and romanticism of Tom Petty, the air-tight instrumental proficiency of Nashville and the rugged independent streak of alt-country. You can hear the whole wonderful cocktail below.

McLean and his band—which also features Brian Griffin on drums and Ben Mars on bass—are currently on the road to support One and Only.
