Glide Magazine Reviews Great Peacock’s “Gran Pavo Real”

Great Peacock
Great Peacock

There are times where a band’s name and album cover provide little or no indication of what to expect. And when said references offer an image that’s the exact opposite of the music that accompanies those initial impressions, it may dissuade any initial encounter. The fact is, Great Peacock’s handle and the peacock covered skull head that adorns the cover of the band’s new album Gran Pavo Real offer no real reason to give any further thought to the music that may reside within.

Consequently, the potential listener is best advised to forget everything they may have been taught about the importance of first impressions. Despite any lack of familiarity, Great Peacock serves up a sound that resonates and reverberates as it soars towards the stratosphere. Take for example, the song “Begging to Stay.” The track combines the emotive plea conveyed by the title with a ballad that’s flush with emotional urgency. The solid grooves of “Hideaway” and “Rattlesnake” boast a rootsy rock feel that often brings to mind those denim-clad denizens of Laurel Canyon, circa the early ‘70s. There’s clear commitment here, and even the simple sentiments delivered by the soothing “All I Really Want Is You,” the Eagles-like rocker “Heartbreak Comin’ Down” and the questionable intentions of  “Let’s Get Drunk Tonight” leave an emphatic impression that belies any sense of objectivity. The prime accouterments are here — agreeable vocals, ringing guitars, keyboards, pedal steel (courtesy of Carl Broemel of My Morning Jacket) and a staunch rhythm section that underscores it all — and indeed, that basic formula serves their style well.

Mother Church Pew Review’s Great Peacock’s – Gran Pavo Real

Great Peacock
Great Peacock

Anthemic acoustic guitar riffs mixed with contemplative finger-picked melodies. Lyrics spanning from reflective to whiskey-drunk. Dramatic vocal builds alongside gentle harmonies. Waves of folk crashing against shoals of rock and blues. Together, these traits define both the heart of Americana music as well as the soul of Great Peacock’s new album, Gran Pavo Real.

It may seem improbable how well these rising folk rockers feel the pulse of the Americana genre, yet trace their roots to an alcohol-fueled night of creativity among the band’s founding duo, singer/guitarist Andrew Nelson and fellow guitarist Blount Floyd.  Somehow the country-rock loving Nelson and the 90’s country-music-influenced Floyd hit on the idea, almost joking, of creating a folk band…with an animal in its name…thus creating the blurry vision that is now Great Peacock.  Perhaps the band’s unorthodox heritage is what allows Gran Pavo Real to stand out as its own sound in a musical landscape inundated with “authentic,” cookie cutter, offerings.

With Gran Pavo Real, the band has taken a remarkable step in the complexity of their lyrical songwriting. On “One Way Ticket,” Nelson muses about a restless spirit taking flight: “I’m a Rolling Stone/Yeah I can’t sit still/I’m a one-way ticket/heading straight downhill/ I’m a backroad Baptist with stories to tell/Got a one-way ticket to keep me out of hell.” On the album, whether pining, reflecting, or simply going on a bender, the lyrics have a poetic flow that allows them to impact with deeper meaning.

Creative Loafing Atlanta gives Midnight Larks’ new LP 3 out of 5 stars

midnight larks atlanta garage psych

Midnight Larks’ self-titled debut steps boldly onto the glowing frontier of psychedelia and garage rock with a stylish gait that reaches beyond all of the aforementioned genres’ sonic limitations. The album opens with a pair of standout numbers, the spaghetti Western-tinged “Gunfighter” and the spy-themed “Loner.” Both usher in a thick and atmospheric blanket of swirling obsession, paisley melodies, and a bewitching magnetism. There’s an awful lot of texture and imagination at work in songs such as “Shameless Child,” “Tonight,” and “Tease,” each one drawing inspiration from the Ramones’ shotgun approach to songwriting, Gram Parsons’ psychedelic country candor, and the Shangri-Las’ dreamlike drift.

Singer and bass player Nikki Speake’s voice leaves an indelible girl-punk impression on “Summer of the Preacher.” Guitar player and singer Sasha Vallely takes lead on the sultry, “Moontown,” showing off a depth and breadth of musical abilities. As each song slithers through various and sundry stories of heartbreak, high tension, and danger, the visceral rock ’n’ roll momentum never fades. Drummer Pietro DiGennaro is the secret weapon, toggling seamlessly fast and slow tempos with loose and natural human sway. Beneath Midnight Larks cinematic grit, the album disguises a familiar Americana landscape with heavy-handed strumming and a barrel-chested roar to beat the devil and save Atlanta’s rock ’n’ roll scene. New Noise Magazine streams the new self-titled LP from Atlanta garage/psych trio Midnight Larks

midnight larks atlanta garage psych

“This album has been a long time in the works and we are excited to finally be able to release it to the public. We first started playing together live three years ago and these are the songs that have developed over time through us playing many live shows around Atlanta. Some of the songs were written by myself and Nikki years ago in our previous projects and reworked to fit with the Midnight Larks style and some were brand new songs written especially for the band. I wrote ‘Gunfighter,’ ‘Loner,’ ‘Shady,’ ‘Moon Town,’ ‘Sometimes’ and ‘Tonight’ and Nikki and I co-wrote ‘Tease.’” – Sasha Vallely of Midnight Larks

We’re pleased to bring you the premiere of Midnight Larks’ new self-titled album (listen below), which is officially released today, March 30th. READ MORE…

Tiger March give track-by-track breakdown of their new LP Hold Something at Atwood Magazine

Synthpop’s freshest couple open their debut album with a confessional petition: “Hey hey, by the way, could you stay? I want to ask…,” sings Tiger March’s Annie Gleason, surrounded by the glowing sounds of her musical and marital partner, Matthew Gleason. A bubbling love song full of tension and hope, “Could You” sets a sweet tone for Tiger March as the duo embark on a journey of bright sonic swells and intense, dynamic emotions.  “My hands are magic in your hands; this wasn’t what we planned, but if this is all that we have, are you scared to ask?“

“In an album that charts love’s beginnings, ends, and in-betweens, Hold Somethingshowcases the hopeful drive that sends us searching — even if at times misguided — for that someone or something to hold onto,” the band shares. “Hold Something is the album’s refrain, its reminder, and its imperative. Love — the search for it, the beginning, middle, and end of it — can be as shiny and shimmery as it can be dark and devastating, but you’re going to do it anyway because you have to and you should.”Forming through a Craigslist post four years ago, Tiger March was a band long before it was a love story: Annie and Matthew connected over shared tastes in music and a desire to craft something unique together. Their debut album Hold Something, independently released 3/23/2018, is a bustling montage of moments and memories that capture their individual and shared emotional journey. READ MORE…
