SONG PREMIERE: Charlie Overbey’s “OUTLAWS”

Charlie Overbey
Charlie Overbey

C&I has an exclusive first listen to country-rocker Charlie Overbey’s newest track, “Outlaws,” off of his upcoming Broken Arrow album.

If you like honky-tonk country music from artists like Johnny Cash, then this new track from multitalented country rock ’n’ roller Charlie Overbey is for you. Driven by a pedal steel, bluesy guitar riffs, and lyrics about the passing of outlaw great Waylon Jennings, the song “Outlaws” is country folk rock that packs a gritty emotional punch.

“‘Outlaws’ is derived from my thoughts and haunting realizations about losing so many of the great talents and artists of our time,” Overbey says. “It’s a song about dreaming big and creating magic. It’s a song of hope. It’s a song about keeping our late musical heroes close to the heart and having faith in new artists to carry the torch for generations to come. It’s about those of us who refuse to buy into the concept of being part of the herd, and the spirit of ‘Waylon’s Way’ taking the wheel, so to speak.”

Overbey, who also designs custom cowboy hats with his company, Lone Hawk, is a California rocker with a flair for the Western lifestyle. Witness the panache with which he pulls off wearing his distinctive vintage-inspired hats.

“Outlaws” also features a stunning performance by the Mastersons, who play backup for the legendary Steve Earle. The track is a fantastic preview of Overbey’s upcoming album, Broken Arrow, a compilation of songs from a man who has been through hard times and come away wiser.

Song Premiere: Leslie Tom’s Swinging ‘Hey Good Lookin’”

Leslie Tom
Leslie Tom

You’d be hard-pressed to find a traditional country singer who hasn’t been influenced by Hank Williams, but few modern traditionalists have taken the lyrics and legacy of Williams’ to heart as deeply as Leslie Tom. Tom has been a disciple of Williams since she was a child. She says the singer has shaped nearly every aspect of her career.

“I honestly do not remember a time I was not aware of Hank Williams,” Tom tells Wide Open Country. “I was introduced to music through my father on our 90-minute drives from my mom’s house to his house every other Friday evening. During those drives, the only music he played was traditional country. Hank Williams was one of the first, if not the first, artists I heard as a child. His impact on my music goes back to his influence from my birth.”
Today, Wide Open Country is proud to premiere Tom’s spin on “Hey Good Lookin’,” which Williams wrote and recorded in 1951. The song has been covered by dozens of artists over the years, but Tom’s Texas swing take on the track makes the classic sound as fresh as ever.

Tom says she was initially nervous to record with the industry legends, but the musicians’ excitement for the project put her at ease.

“My relationship with Nashville at that time was still not in a positive place so the last thing I wanted was to walk into a studio and be judged by a bunch of musicians that play and have played with the stars.  My experience with all of them, but most specifically Lloyd, was quite the opposite,” Tom says.  “There was excitement about the record because I write and play the music that they ‘grew up’ playing and loving.”
“Over the past two years, my relationship with Lloyd has grown into a very close friendship and I can tell you I love that man with all of my heart,” Tom continues. “During our session working on this album, he gave me a steel lesson on his guitar. That was about as nerve-racking as anything I’ve done in my life. But in true Lloyd Green form, he was a true gentleman. It’s an honor to have him play with me and I’ll be forever thankful.”
Ain’t It Something, Hank Williams is out March 23 on Coastal Bend Music.

SONG PREMIERE: ROSS COOPER’S “ANOTHER MILE”

Ross Cooper
Ross Cooper

Kicking off with loose bluesy guitar licks, dreamlike acoustic strums, and a descending rhythmic blend of steel guitars and brushed drums, Ross Cooper’snewest single, “Another Mile,” manages to capture in sound what it feels like to grow up. The wistful lyrics will inspire you, just as Cooper intended.

“A ton of folks move to Nashville with a similar goal in mind, and for the most part, it’s pretty dang tough on everyone at one point or another,” Cooper says. “I wanted to write about that optimism though — about leaving everything you know and cutting out on your own to chase something. I wrote [“Another Mile”] with my friend Ryan Beaver. We’re both, coincidentally, pretty big Roger Miller fans. When we sat down to write, I had part of a chord progression and an idea for a title, and that was about it. In the way that the rhyme scheme and chord progression fell together, I think you can hear a bit of that Roger Miller influence.”

“Another Mile,” is Cooper’s latest single off of his upcoming album, I Rode Wild Horses— a title that reflects the Texas native’s former career as a professional bareback rider.

“This song was one of the easiest to record,” he says. “I remember looking up during Eddy Dunlap’s pedal-steel solo, and thinking, How in the hell do you top that? We got it knocked out in a couple of takes, called it a day, and went and got tacos.”

Cooper says he’s very thankful for the caliber of players he got to work with on the album. “It sure makes everything a lot easier,” he says.

I Rode Wild Horses will be available March 9. In the meantime, tune your ears to Cooper’s “Another Mile” and prepare to be hooked.

Track Premiere: Jamie McLean Band “You’re Not The Only One”

Jamie McLean Band
Jamie McLean Band

Brooklyn-based Americana rocker Jamie McLean, who in the past has toured as guitarist for the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Aaron Neville, Brett Dennen and more, is about to drop a new solo album. It’s the follow-up to 2011’s superb Sunday Morning: produced by Wilco’s Ken Coomer at Nashville’s Sound Emporium, One and Only features the tight-as-nails Jamie McLean Band (McLean along with Brian Griffin on drums and Ben Mars on bass) and includes guests Sam Bush and Jeff Coffin (Dave Matthews Band).

We’re proud to be able to premiere a track from the new record, which arrives in stores and a digital outlets next week, Feb. 9. Check out “You’re Not The Only One”:

McLean offered his take on the tune and its genesis: “‘You’re Not The Only One’is a rock and roller but lyrically it speaks to the human condition. It focuses on how everyone, no matter who there are will go through something difficult at some point in their lives. There will be conflict, heartache, fear or sadness but there are brighter days ahead. There is solace in knowing that we have all been there and we can always elevate above the trouble. We can turn the dark to light and it will no doubt get better.

“The guitar riff at the beginning of the song just came to me. It felt like a Neil Young and Crazy Horse riff and there are certainly nods to Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in there. Once I had that main musical theme I was off and running. ‘Communication broke down’was the first lyric to come to me and I dove into a story based on relationships and conflict and how to overcome it. I think it’s a bit of a universal sentiment.

BAEBLE premieres “Already Know” by DEGA

Today we’re getting to premiere the brand new track “Already Know” from super husband-wife duo DEGA. Made up of Kalen and Aslyn Nash, the Georgia-based group achieves extremely danceable grooves and and catchy hooks. Pulsating guitars strum as the two vocalists going back and forth, offering a refreshing, balanced contrast. It’s both captivating and dreamy as hell.

Aslyn shared the inspiration behind the song with Baeble, “We were thinking about the emotional dichotomy in passionate relationships. Kalen added, “The super highs, the low lows, the love hard-fight hard thing… We were also reflecting on the inner struggle between two parts of oneself… the part that believes you need someone or something so bad and, at the same time, you don’t need anyone/anything at all.” READ MORE…

Interview | Jamie McLean Talks Band, Business, and Biking with FFS

Jamie McLean Band
Jamie McLean Band

Jamie McLean Band is no stranger to music. Cutting his teeth as a musician, touring the globe as the guitarist for artists including The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Aaron Neville, Brett Dennen and more, McLean has honed his art. Now, he’s releasing his new record One and Only, an 11-track collection of gritty alt-country combined with Tom Petty-channeling heartland rock & roll. Produced by Wilco’s Ken Coomer at the Sound Emporium in Nashville and features contributions from Sam Bush (NPR, Billboard, No Depression) and Jeff Coffin (Dave Matthews Band), One and Only is an accumulation of everything McLean’s worked for.

For Folk’s Sake caught up with McLean to talk about how he defines success, the ever-changing music industry and the importance of getting out and enjoying your surroundings, whether you’re at home or on the road. Read on below, and catch McLean on tour now.

Who is Jamie McLean Band?

I always say I’m the last guy to know. The music is so close to me and such a part of me that I’m a bad critic of what I do. Jamie McLean Band plays solid roots, blues, soul, rock and roll. I’d like to think we take a bit of everything from a lot of places like New Orleans, Nashville, Memphis, New York to make a little gumbo of our own. We’ve been lucky enough to tour with some of our heroes like Gregg Allman, Taj Mahal, Dr. John, Tedeschi/Trucks Band, Los Lobos and more. I grew up outside of New York City playing in a band with my brother Carter McLean who plays drums at Lion King on Broadway. I moved to New Orleans to join Dirty Dozen Brass Band, and that band and that city really shaped me. It’s the closest thing I’ve found in the US that feels like a foreign country. To have Mardi Gras Indians running around and drinking in the streets and parades just because it’s Sunday or Monday or Tuesday… they know how to have some fun and the streets are oozing with soul.
