Wide Open Country Premieres the New Single from Low Tide, “Who Fans the Flames”

Brooklyn-based band Low Tide (Eli Oberman, Courtney Robbins and Fen Ikner) contemplate loss and the passage of time on the sweeping, powerful “Who fans the Flames,” the latest release from their debut album The Alchemist (out on October 25).

Songwriter Eli Oberman says “Who Fans the Flames” was inspired by a Jewish tradition.

“When thinking about how to write a fire song, I was really drawn to the idea of writing about fire not as a raging powerful force (which is how I usually tend to think of it), but instead as a single, fragile flame that needs to be sheltered and protected,” Oberman tells Wide Open Country. “Imagining that led me to connect the imagery to my Jewishness, thinking about how we light yahrzeit candles in remembrance of lost loved ones on the anniversaries of their deaths. The sense that a flame is being used to almost collapse time in the song was really resonant with me.”

Nostalgia rules the roost on “Drunkard’s Dream,” which kicks off as a stripped-down ballad and builds into a Coldplay-sized blast of expansive arena pop. Throughout it all, EG Vines sings about a golden yesterday that seems to shine a bit brighter than the present, while pedal steel guitar and anthemic percussion sell the drama in the background.

Ditty TV Premieres Sofia Talvik’s New Video for “Siren Song”

Sweden’s Sofia Talvik released her latest album, Paws of a Bear, back in September, participated in our Americana Around the World segment this week, and has coordinated with DittyTV for the world premiere of her new video of “Siren Song.”

As for the album, Talvik has created a mellow, indie-folk, 10-song masterpiece that’s wistful and melancholy. With acoustic instrumentation and a haunting pedal steel, the music elicits warmth and emotion, providing a wonderful backdrop for Talvik’s sweet and stunning vocals.

Exclusive Premiere of Jeff Crosby’s new Single “Laramie” from The Boot

Jeff Crosby by Scott Simontacchi

Singer-songwriter Jeff Crosby is premiering his new song “Laramie” exclusively for readers of The Boot. Press play below to listen to the song, which Crosby calls “almost too personal.”

Like all great Americana songs, “Laramie” finds its origins in a relationship gone bad. As its title might indicate, it takes both sonic and lyrical inspiration from the sparse vibes of Wyoming’s capital city. “I stayed in Laramie with an ex-girlfriend, and we got a cheap hotel, went out on the town, hit a bunch of dive bars in the freezing cold,” Crosby tells The Boot. “When we split up, I found myself wishing we could go back there. I guess the idea is that, when you really love someone, it doesn’t really matter where you are, as long as you’re together.”
