Sara Rachele shares new single at Glide Magazine

Sara Rachele’ forthcoming LP Scorpio Moon, coming fall 2018 was recorded live to tape in Brooklyn, N.Y., with Binky Griptite and other members of Amy Winehouse & Sharon Jones’ former backing band The Dap-Kings. Co-produced by Rachele and keyboardist Spencer Garn (Ruby Velle & the Soulphonics) and mixed by Atlanta-based engineer and Rachele bandmate Kris Sampson (New West Records band Ponderosa), “Scorpio Moon” is a Dusty Springfield meets Cat Power lament in the form of a gypsy-jazz dirge, swooning between time signatures as a distinct Eastern European influence seeps through. With its warbling organ, and vintage New York tale, it’s a musical and lyrical homage to the roots of her father, an Italian/Slavic immigrant.

“‘Scorpio’ is a warning song, a reminder and an astrological spank,” Rachele says. “We’re all pulled one way or the other—sometimes to the light, sometimes to a mirage, sometimes to the darkness where we need not go.”

Sara Rachele (pronounced ra-kelly) grew up a studio rat and folk child. Working for free cleaning out the cupboards at famed Atlanta acoustic hotspot Eddie’s Attic, she met countless musicians and writers and, and fell into bands as a side player before she’d even written a song of her own. She released her debut LP, Diamond Street, in 2014, and followed with a swoony 7-inch cover of Cracker’s “Low.” The latter was dubbed ‘sublime’ by SPIN and began to chart on commercial radio. Rachele’s 2016 sophomore LP, Motel Fire—recorded with her repurposed punk band The Skintights—was imagined in Joshua Tree, Calif., with help from pedal steel player Chris Unck (Butch Walker, Lisa Loeb). Rachele then released April Fool in 2017. Dedicated to her late grandmother, the album is a collection of bluegrass and folk songs Rachele cut in East Nashville with guitarist Johnny Duke (Little Big Town, Mary Chapin Carpenter).

In her newest release, “Bye Bye Baby, Bye Bye,” off her upcoming LP Scorpio Moon, Sara Rachele takes the raw intensity found in the feeling of loss and moving on and translates it into a gentle story of vibrato and smooth melodies. Her voice, soft yet resilient, finds its strength in the lyrical telling of memories and future thinking. The folk roots heard behind the indie-Americana fronting sets a beautiful stage for the style heard all through Scorpio Moon, and as the final track on the B side, the 7-inch is wrapped together in perfect harmony. Folk Radio UK praises Owlbiter’s new single “Roof of the World”

Listen to ‘Roof of the World’, the new single from Brooklyn indie-folk project Owlbiter taken from the forthcoming new LP, Stud Farm, out on August 10th. Led by Matt Cascella, Owlbiter’s new album is composed of 12 tracks full of gently plucked acoustic guitars and ukuleles, drowsy brass and the occasional keyboard atmospherics, but very little percussion—a result of the keep-it-simple approach Cascella sought when Owlbiter was in its nascent stages despite having grown up playing the drums. Owlbiter shines all the brighter in this low-key setting and deserves to be more on a lot more radars. READ MORE…

New Noise premieres Brooklyn indie-folk project Owlbiter’s new single “Clap”

We’re pleased to bring you the premiere of Owlbiter’s new song “Clap” (listen below). The track is taken from their forthcoming album Stud Farm, which is scheduled to be released on August 10, 2018.

You’d never know that Owlbiter – the latest project from Brooklyn-based musician Matt Cascella – is the product of a guy who grew up playing the drums. After all, Owlbiter’s new album, Stud Farm, is full of gently plucked acoustic guitars and ukuleles, drowsy brass and the occasional keyboard atmospherics, but very little percussion. As Cascella explains, that was a result of the keep-it-simple approach he sought when Owlbiter was in its nascent stages.

“The band that I’d been playing in for five, six years crumbled fast,” Cascella explains. “There were a lot of unfinished ideas still kicking around in my head. I didn’t want to go into a studio and make it a big ordeal. I didn’t really have a band, I just had some oddball ideas, and I wanted to keep things scrappy. Get a good buddy of mine to come over and not think too much – just have at it, keep it really bare bones. There’s a trombone but, other than that, it’s pretty much bare minimum, which is how I wanted to do it.” READ MORE…

Simon Patrick Kerr’s “God Was A Gambler” named one of Rolling Stone’s “10 Best Country & Americana Songs of the Week”

Years before fronting his Nashville-based rock band, the Wans, Simon Patrick Kerr penned songs as a teenaged folkie, taking inspiration from family friends like Guy Clark and John Prine along the way. He returns to those roots with his solo debut, Doldrums. Mixing acoustic guitar arpeggios with astral strings, “God Was a Gambler” is at once stripped-down and symphonic, like a not-so-distant cousin to Ray Lamontagne’s “Be Here Now.” READ MORE…
