Paper Magazine unveils dreamy new video from San Francisco’s DONCAT

Don Cat

San Francisco-based indie-rock singer Duncan Nielsen makes dreamy psych-pop as DONCAT. He grew up surrounded by horses and nature, and his upbringing clearly informs the earthy, laid-back nature of his work. These days, he writes and plays music primarily from his San Francisco home which overlooks much of the city. He says, “Sometimes I have a guitar in my hands but I’m not even playing. Like, I forget to play cause I’m just lost in my head and simultaneously staring at the view. I do get things done though, lots of demoing and writing up there.”

The video for “Once I Went To Las Vegas,” off DONCAT’s forthcoming album Preservation of the Spirit, is a 16 mm reverie. Nielsen’s face is superimposed on scenes of cityscapes, rippling water, and mountains. The instrumentals in the song are similarly calming. Nielsen’s voice weaves delicately through a wash of skittering drums and psychedelic guitar. The video’s gorgeous nature imagery is a perfect complement for the track, which is a sharp critique of materialism and daily social anxieties. Neilsen croons, “I’m smoking cigars in a cheap suit/eating foie gras in a restaurant, five stars/ are these my lucky cards?” asking us to unplug from the fast-paced world of social media and fancy restaurants for the quiet, necessary solitude of self-reflection.

The Deli SF premieres DONCAT’s new single “Cut It Out”

Duncan Nielsen is the vocalist and guitarist behind DONCAT, the psychedelic bedroom-pop artist who is quickly rising up the ranks of the San Francisco scene. With a forthcoming LP, entitled Preservation of the Spirit, due out on May 18th and a list of shared bills that includes Ty Segall, it’s clear that Nielsen is on the brink of something big. That means his upcoming performance at Rickshaw Stop on May 31st should definitely be on your list.

The Deli SF is happy to be premiering “Cut it Out” (streaming below), a moody and memorable single that primarily revolves around the use of one minor chord — giving the track what Nielsen described as “a kind of desolte feel.” Lyrically, he sees the song as “an impetus to back up your actions and feelings with true action.” READ MORE…

New Noise Magazine premieres Beechwood’s “Nero”

From two-minute pop perfection, to the sound of drug-induced nightmare psychoses, the trio’s music hits you where it hurts. Gordon Lawrence (guitar/vox), Isa Tineo (drums/vox) and Sid Simons (bass/vox) are drawing their rock n’roll line in the dirt… Which side are you on?

Beechwood’s newest single, “Nero,” is a fuzzy, unhinged instrumental track that is both gritty and captivating. Gordon Lawrence’s intermittent shrieks can be heard towards the back of mix, while the dirty tone of the guitar and drums take over. The members of Beechwood seem to be sparking their own revolution by way of noise and disregard for structure. READ MORE…

The Spill Magazine reviews Cheap Tissue’s ‘passionate’ debut LP

Cheap Tissue’s self-titled first album has all the grit, passion, and messy sonic energy of a classic punk band’s debut LP — think Bad Religion’s How Could Hell Be Any Worse but with more a more refined musical sound. Cheap Tissue is a thrilling ode to the ‘80s punk rock scene, with vocals that are just as distorted as the guitars. The LA band was formed by garage-punk wizards Andrew Taylor and Jesse Youngblood (both guitar/vocals), and the duo was soon joined by John Tyree (bass/vocals) and eye-patch sporting drummer Matthew Spizer. Cheap Tissue was recorded all in one adrenaline-fueled session and its spitfire blitzkrieg style echoes its frenzied pace of production. Despite its aggressive energy, this pulsing sonic wall of a CD doesn’t feel like an assault on the listener; instead, its prototypically punk chord progressions, choppy vocals, and shifting tempos are comfortingly familiar.

The music is an exhilarating celebration of raw, uncut rock and roll — while many punk bands pontificate on politics, Cheap Tissue is more interested in the spirit and nostalgia of DIY punk rock than in social justice, which is somehow refreshing. Cheap Tissue presents itself as a throbbing anthem for all old-school rockers who are proving that rock and roll is more than just a passing rebellious phase. The band somehow manages to channel a teenaged garage punk band, glorifying partying while spitting in the face of authority, while also maintaining the gravitas of washed-up punk rockers, sharing wisdom on battling drug addiction and wasted youth.

Many of the tracks hail back to hard-core punk classics, with a Black Flag meets Dead Kennedys feel in terms of production and vocals. “Apeman” has a catchy, jaunting riff reminiscent of ’90s Green Day, while “Feed the Children” is a fast-paced head-banging riot song that was made for moshing. “On the Corner” sounds more classic rock with a slower tempo but undeniable power. “New Promotion” sticks to its punk roots while integrating an amped-up ‘50s vibe, complete with “oohs”, modulated deep vocals evocative of Elvis, and a beat that makes you want to do the twist. Though the album is wholly unsurprising in style and content it doesn’t feel rehashed or trite – it is a revitalization of neo-punk emerging from a deep-rooted love for the classics, the kind of devotion to rock and roll that scares away any poseurs from the first riff. PopMatters Premieres New Song And Video By The Mallett Brothers Band

TMBB

The Mallett Brothers Band’s new single, “Long Black Braid”, is an anthem indicative of all of the influences above. Placing an exclamation point beside the “rock” in that folk-rock descriptor, it is a richly layered rock ballad that evokes images of traveling down northeastern highways with the wind in your hair. Although, this piece’s jubilant instrumentation is ever deceptive considering the dark nature of its lyrics.
