Paper Magazine premiere Beechwood’s new video for “Ain’t Gonna Last All Night”

Beechwood
With a new report revealing millennials’ social media-induced perfectionism problem, Beechwood decides it’s time for us to take off the mask in new video, “Ain’t Gonna Last All Night,” starring artist/personality Nicky Ottav.

The NYC pop-punk band has always had a talent for pulling back the curtain to reveal the dark underbelly of humanity, and their latest visual is no different. Gordon Lawrence’s garage-rock vocals lend an authenticity to the track, which is perfectly paired with Ottav’s “self-masking” — he applies absurdist makeup and a bright green to demonstrate the lengths we go to put our best face forward. Lawrence explains the concept came from his fascination with people’s desire to (often medicinally) conceal their own insecurity and fear, bred by our obsession with “keeping up appearances.”

“It’s no big mystery to me why Americans are so fucked up right now on uppers, downers, anti-depressants or whatever else Dr. Feelgood will prescribe,” Lawrence says. “It’s much easier to mask the symptoms than confront them. “Ain’t Gonna Last All Night” is about this; it’s about the little things that people try to hide from each other that really make any given person who he or she is.”

He continues: “Everyone always has this front up, but in my experience, I’ve been able to see right through it. Doesn’t make me special. I just like to see a piece of something real before I get into it. It’s always easier to put up a front, but at the end of the day, it’s you who has to look at yourself in the mirror, and only you who has to live with yourself.”

Check out the video, premiered by PAPER, below and look out for Beechwood’s new LP, Songs From the Land of Nod, available January 26.

Beechwood are playing alongside The New York Doll’s Johansen at Elsewhere on the 20th and Berlin January 27th, grab their limited edition Starburst vinyl here.

The Deli Magazine shares featured listing of Beechwood, previewing their show at Elsewhere & release party at Berlin

NYC psychedelic glam-punk rockers Beechwood are set to release their latest record “Songs From the Land of Nod” on January 26th via Alive Naturalsound. Building a reputation for reckless and disorderly behavior (which covers the punk label well), their sound draws equally from the psych and glam rock realms. Stylistic elements of both Marc Bolan and Daniel Ash (in particular his soft vocal style) can be heard in many of the tracks. Thickly layered background voices juxtapose sweetly against garage drums and guitars, leading to frequent psych-out jams. Current single “C F” (streaming below) makes full use of all these aspects while adding slide guitar and keyboards into the mix. This easy psychedelia and vintage sounding looseness puts Beechwood in a sonic world not too distant from the ones inhabited by modern classics like Foxygen and Tame Impala. The band will be opening for NY Dolls legend David Johansen at Elsewhere on 1/20, a show that also features Deli cover stars Baby Shakes and celebrated DJ Jonathan Toubin. –Dave Cromwell

What Youth premieres Beechwood’s new single “C F”

NYC-based glam punk trio Beechwood are no strangers to the dirty side of the law. Earlier this year, drummer and vocalist Isa Tineo and bassist Sydney Simons were arrested during an outdoor show for “reckless endangerment, criminal mischief, resisting arrest, obstructing government administration and disorderly conduct.” The whole thing was caught on social media and made its way to headlines in NY Daily News. Welcome to rock ‘n’ roll, boys. Considering Beechwood remind me most prominently of notorious rebels Brian Jonestown and My Bloody Valentine, I wouldn’t expect anything less from these punks. Check out their new single for “C/F,” off forthcoming LP Songs From the Land of Nod, dropping January 26th via Alive Naturalsound. It’s languid, drippy, like molasses spilling out of a jar, and the vocals do a subtle Kevin Shields thing in my brain. So listen to the track, and read guitarist Gordon Lawrence’s description of the song below. –Maya Eslami

“I wrote C/F when I was in a dark period in my life. I woke up everyday struggling to find any real meaning to be awake. As a result, I continuously made myself numb to my surroundings, to my feelings, and to the people around me. I almost stopped trying altogether. Luckily, in my darkest moments I’ve always had music to get me through the day. Depression is something that is hard to talk about, and it is even harder to ask for help because it feels like a never-ending pit. You get so far down that you don’t even know which way is up anymore. I found it hard to even look at my guitar when I was at my worst, let alone pick it up. Eventually I was able to, and every time I picked it up I just began to play the chords C and F over and over again. There was something therapeutic about playing those two chords, and I got this song out of it.”
