Americana UK

by Baby Robot Media

Americana UK reviews the new album from Matthew Check, Without a Throne, noting, “There’s a definite feel of Jackson Brown and Warren Zevon… lively and energetic … classy pedal steel playing.”

Now sober, the second song – ‘Old Wooden Floor’ – looks at the harsh reality of drinking, but again this is an upbeat song with some classy pedal steel playing. Check’s bluegrass background surfaces on ‘Pretty Mama’ and he stays close to home on ‘The Way That You Are’, which was written by his brother Jonathan and is a lovely tale of unrequited love – again enhanced by some superb ivory tinkling. Jonathan’s a talented sibling as another of his songs is included – ‘The Shape It Appears’ – a country waltz about being able to see an era clearly only after it’s over – amazingly its author was only a teenager when he penned it.

Americana UK debuts the latest single from Lara Taubman, “Silver Linings,” calling it “a word-rich piece that will draw the listener in and give them something to think about as well.”

Lara Taubman’s second album ‘Ol’ Kentucky Light‘, is out on September 16th on Atomic Sound Record Company, and it sees the New York-based country-soul singer/songwriter address mortality, mental health, spirituality, survival, and the finding of hope in an exceedingly turbulent and traumatized world.

Americana UK reviews Whitney Lockert’s new LP, calling it a “well-produced record, with some fine guitar playing, which should appeal to fans of Neil Young and Duane Allman.”

The album comprises nine songs which range from acoustic strummers to rockier, Neil Youngesque, grungy arrangements. The album opens with the title track, which sets out the record’s themes of seeking contentment and a place in the world. The song muses on leaving everything behind and hitting the road ‘in an old dirty car’, in search of a place to ‘build something old’ and finding some stability, as well as companionship.

Fundraiser: James Kahn partners with AmericanaUK and Save The Whales to debut his new video for “No More a’ Whalin’.” Donate and receive a complimentary download of his entire new album By the Risin’ of the Seas.

SoCal singer/songwriter, Emmy-nominated TV writer-producer & novelist James Kahn's seventh album, By the Risin’ of the Sea, turns our expectations of traditional sea shanties on their heads by confronting our modern environmental struggles.

Beginning with the low drone of Adam Phillips’ pastoral bagpipes and then Kahn’s timeless folk-vocal, ‘No More a’ Whalin”  succeeds in transporting us across both time and place.  The song is held together by the low heartbeat thump of Rebecca Troon’s bodhran, beating out an absorbing rhythm, while David West and Doug Clegg deliver gorgeous, rich backing vocals, harmonies that rise and soar, lifting Kahn’s own voice.

Using the power of music to help creatures famous for their song is a great idea.  James Kahn has teamed up with Save the Whales for this exciting project.  We urge everyone to donate to Save the Whales via this link.  On the donations page, write ‘James Kahn’ in the notes section and then you’ll receive a ‘thank you’ from Save the Whales along with a link to download the entire new album ‘By the Risin’ of the Seas’ free of charge.
