The Pinkerton Raid’s “Rebel Mama Blues” is a satirical slow-burner with a Bowie-meets-Black Keys feel- a blast of zeitgeist-capturing political garage-psych that explores how a whole generation of white hippie-boomer parents were unconsciously primed for late-life Fox News brainwashing by 1960s anti-authoritarian individualism.

When the Durham, N.C., band’s singer and guitarist Jesse James DeConto wrote the song- premiering exclusively today at The Big Takeover- he’d been meditating on how a steady diet of Right-wing propaganda has strained intergenerational family relationships for him and so many of his friends.

“I always thought of my parents’ generation as these hippies who stood up to The Man,” DeConto says. “Then when all the post-mortems came out after the 2016 election, it was clear that the hippies, the boomers, were the ones who chose Donald Trump. They thought of him as some kind of rebel because he didn’t have political experience, and he was supposed to be this outsider who would ‘drain the swamp.’

Fairbanks & the Lonesome Light has officially announced their forthcoming LP, Nothing to Escape (out 8/25) via No Depression!

Austin, TX duo Fairbanks & the Lonesome Light (nee Erik Flores and Amelia Rose Logan) have cooked up a real zinger with Nothing to Escape. Originally hailing from Austin, the pair reunited in LA and found kindred spirits in both their songwriting sensibilities and stamina for partying. Having moved back to Austin, the duo has sobered up. Nothing to Escape is no raucous party. It in fact addresses Flores’ efforts to kick his drinking habit. While the band can surely shake the walls, the title track, “Nothing to Escape,” showcases Flores and Logan’s effortless harmonies. Flores’ wordy lyrics are not a hindrance here; in fact, it feels as if the pair has transformed hard-hitting prose into song. The unhurried pedal steel guitar leads to an emotional climax as a newly sober narrator comes to grips with confronting his depression without the aid of substances. The song arrives at a bittersweet conclusion, suggesting an emotional complexity that will make the rest of Nothing to Escape a treat for repeat listeners.
