Impose release “Eat Cornbread Raise Hell,” by The Dexateens

dexateens cornelius chapel records alabama

Breaking up is hard to do. And for the Alabama based Dexateens, it seems they worked out the hard stuff, because they’ve reunited to release their previously recorded (yet unreleased) Teenage Hallelujah. Five years after the members parted ways, they’re back, equipped with garage rock infused tracks, akin to Black Lips and indie favorites Parquet Courts. Consisting of original members Elliott McPherson, Matt Patton, Brian Gosdin, Brad Armstrong, and Taylor Hollingsworth filling Lee Bains’ slot; The Dextaeens approach rock with all guards down– leaving us with nothing but Ramones-style feel good tracks. Meet Flower’s Jack Fowler (also of Exwhy) who premieres the power garage of his new single “Deadly Ill” off the forthcoming album Waste of Life available February 5. “I was disenchanted with the whole dream of a family and an office job—the ‘American Dream,’ as it were—that I bought into for a little bit,” Jack explained, “I was working a pretty decent office job and doing absolutely nothing beyond working and getting depressed, I was just spinning my wheels and growing bored and really depressed. I was struggling with talking to people, being social at all. That’s the core of this album—anxiety and not being sure how to define yourself.” READ MORE…

Stream of the new EP from The Head at Impose’s Week in Pop column

The Head atlanta Mike and Jack Shaw brothers Jacob Morrell millipedes it ain't easy

Atlanta, Georgia’s The Head release their Millipedes EP today and we give you the following debut listen followed by a few exclusive insights. The trio of Jack Shaw, Mike Shaw, and Jacob Morrell partake in the time tried and true traditions of power pop that have been reinforced further from the group’s work with the likes of John Vanderslice, Doug Gillard, Mitch Easter, Big Star legend Jody Stephens and more. Continuing what brothers Jack and Mike and friend Jacob began during their freshman year of high school, the self-producedMillipedes moves in a variety of directions that finds The Head moving in assured and exciting headstrong directions.

Musings of messianism and more rocks hard on the opener cut “Jesus” and unfolds in ways that present the three working together like a well-serviced savior machine. Matters get serious on “It Ain’t Easy” that recalls the 2012 Newtown school shooting that explores interpersonal connections from father and son dynamics, to examining the balances and imbalances of our surrounding society at large. Storms and downpours burst in the catchy tarp clad “Raincoats” that seeks a sort of shelter for all things from the threat of overhead rain clouds and their emitted contents. Ineffable things left unsaid, forgotten, and unacknowledged are illustrated in the power fist clenched cut “Unspoken”, right before the three leave you strolling to the guitar lick laden stoned strewn pathway of “Pebbles On The Ground”. Developing styles and sounds of their own championed by their idols and contemporaries, The Head have hemmed a five song cycle to keep you warm this winter until word of a forthcoming full-length makes the news rounds. Impose features Shepherds’ debut LP Exit Youth at their Week in Pop column

Shepheds Adrian Benedykt Switon Peter Cauthorn Jonathan Merenivitch Ross Politi Exit Youth post punk soul del venicci mood ring janelle monae dog bite

Shepherds, masterminded by Jonathan Merenivitch, just released their album Exit Youth today and presented us with the super courteous and super-charged single “Courtesy”. Merenivitch’s musical resume checks his work with Janelle Monae, Dog Bite, Del Venicci, and more, where Shepherds finds him playing with Peter Cauthorn from Mood Rings on bass, George Bataille Battle Cry’s Adrian Switon on drums, with further rumbling bass rhythm considerations courtesy of Canivores and Del Venicci’s Ross Politi. Their debut album toast to rites of passage and the road to adulthood tackles the challenges and changes with a memorable motorik driving jam that is not your parents’ post-punk/kraut/prog/album rock/whatever.

“Courtesy” is noise-reared in a way where every controlled instrumental item (or implementation of audio chaos) is sharpened finally to use every iota of sound to wrap melodic textures around a state of constant, rapid percussive locomotion. From here Merenivitch and the gang serve up sections of reigned roars and primal yells that all abide on accord of harmonic-percussion principles. Nothing stops the roll that “Courtesy” coasts on where sequences of sea-sawing electric metal strings spring up like brontosaurus sized Lochness sized leviathans from the depths of lakes and oceans.
