Mother Church Pew Shares “TIMBERLINE” By The Mallett Brothers Band

Rowdy roots rockers The Mallett Brothers Band have a new album on the way—Vive L’Acadie!— and are unleashing a new single, “Timberline (High Times)” today. The song is a road-worn rocker, barely contained as it barrels down a dusty musical road. “Timberline,” a hopeful song about struggles faced by returning veterans, was written lakeside on an overcast evening at the Mallett family camp (which is what folks in Maine call a cabin), nestled in the Piscataquis County, Maine woods.

Mother Church Pew Review’s Great Peacock’s – Gran Pavo Real

Great Peacock
Great Peacock

Anthemic acoustic guitar riffs mixed with contemplative finger-picked melodies. Lyrics spanning from reflective to whiskey-drunk. Dramatic vocal builds alongside gentle harmonies. Waves of folk crashing against shoals of rock and blues. Together, these traits define both the heart of Americana music as well as the soul of Great Peacock’s new album, Gran Pavo Real.

It may seem improbable how well these rising folk rockers feel the pulse of the Americana genre, yet trace their roots to an alcohol-fueled night of creativity among the band’s founding duo, singer/guitarist Andrew Nelson and fellow guitarist Blount Floyd.  Somehow the country-rock loving Nelson and the 90’s country-music-influenced Floyd hit on the idea, almost joking, of creating a folk band…with an animal in its name…thus creating the blurry vision that is now Great Peacock.  Perhaps the band’s unorthodox heritage is what allows Gran Pavo Real to stand out as its own sound in a musical landscape inundated with “authentic,” cookie cutter, offerings.

With Gran Pavo Real, the band has taken a remarkable step in the complexity of their lyrical songwriting. On “One Way Ticket,” Nelson muses about a restless spirit taking flight: “I’m a Rolling Stone/Yeah I can’t sit still/I’m a one-way ticket/heading straight downhill/ I’m a backroad Baptist with stories to tell/Got a one-way ticket to keep me out of hell.” On the album, whether pining, reflecting, or simply going on a bender, the lyrics have a poetic flow that allows them to impact with deeper meaning.

Mother Church Pew Interviews: Kellen Of Troy

Kellen of Troy
Kellen of Troy

“It was the worst of times, it was the best of times, that’s more like it. The worst came first,” laughs Kellen Wenrich of the birth of his most recent project, Kellen of Troy, formed amidst life transitions, a breakup, and the demise of his band, Apache Relay. “There were a lot of things coming to an end then. But, I met my now wife during that time, and it was a renaissance period, a good time of change in my life.”

Wenrich, who was always a fixture on the Apache Relay stage (and now onstage in the backing band for The Devil Makes Three) with his fiery fiddle skills and mane of long red hair, began playing violin at age five. “My mom asked if I wanted to play violin or piano; when I chose violin she asked me why, and I said, ‘Because I can’t carry a piano,’” he laughs. “I started writing in high school like everybody does, and it was pretty grim. Every couple of years since then, I’d go in spurts of writing, but I’d never found a voice that worked for me until I started Kellen of Troy.”

Kellen of Troy moved from casual side project to main gig, as he spent the last couple of years writing songs for his 2017 EP The Sad Bastard and his brand new LP Posthumous Release. “I started writing to work through some personal stuff and force myself to do something uncomfortable,” he explains. “It’s a lot easier to be the side guy, you don’t have to put yourself out there emotionally, you just put the frosting on top of what’s there. To be the frontman is a bit more taxing, but way more rewarding. I’ve learned not to compromise what I want to say artistically, and not to whitewash anything, to chip away at anything that will obscure what you’re trying to accomplish,” he continues. “It’s an ongoing battle, but I’m getting better at it.”

PREMIERE: “LET’S GET OUT OF HERE” BY JAMIE MCLEAN BAND

In the midst of a cold and dreary winter, and just when the world-famous weather-forecasting groundhog’s shadow has predicted that there’s no end in sight, guitar-wielding blue-eyed soul man Jamie McLean comes through with a little ray of sunshine with his new single, “Let’s Get Out Of Here,” a modernized boy-meets-girl story.  The tune is featured on McLean’s forthcoming album, One And Only, out February 23rd.

“A fella is interested in a lady. There’s some dancing. Her friends are around to judge a bit. There’s so more dancing. He proposes that they take this party elsewhere,” McLean explains of the song. “It’s funny. When I started this song it had almost a reggae feel to it. I was working with Brett Dennen at the time and almost thought about giving him the song instead of recording it myself,” he continues. “I kept hearing a sax solo on this one so I called up my buddy Jeff Coffin from Dave Matthews Band. He totally kills it! Perfect summer vibe!”

As it happens, the band relied on their drummer to keep them focused on the summery vibe. “He played the entire song with a whistle in his mouth. You can hear it at the very end,” McLean reveals. “We kept asking him ‘what time does beach volleyball start?’ By the end of the song he was drooling and looked like a Saint Bernard,” he adds with a laugh. “It kept the whole song beachy and fun.”

ALBUM PREMIERE: “COLLECTING TRIP” BY R. FINN

R. Finn
R. Finn
With haunting yet hopeful arrangements and heart-wrenchingly poignant lyrics, R. Finn has put his kickstand down in the midst of the vast Americana landscape to create a bar-raising deep dive into the best attributes of the genre on his forthcoming album, Collecting Trip, set for release on January 19th.
Following a two-year stint working with The Band’s Levon Helm at his studio in Woodstock, New York, Finn returned to Los Angeles and started his own recording studio and creative space, The Heritage Recording Co., in a converted factory. It was in that studio that Finn recorded Collecting Trip—a ten-track collection of timeless Americana co-produced by legendary drummer Jim Keltner (Bob Dylan, Neil Young, John Lennon) which features contributions from Benmont Tench (Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers), Sean and Sara Watkins (Nickel Creek), and many others.
The LP’s title not only references the “collecting trips” taken by folk musicologists John and Alan Lomax, but also what the album represents to Finn: all the years of accumulating songs, players, styles and gear that have resulted in his affecting, long-evolving sound. And then there’s his deep devotion as a student of songwriting and music history. “I’m just trying to do what I love and what I listen to,” Finn says. “I’m always trying to evoke Ray Charles or Woody Guthrie.”

Mother Church Pew sits down with Hollis Brown for interview during AmericanaFest 2016

rsz_dsc_1408

“We got started in a garage in Queens, New York in 2009,” laughs Mike Montali of roots rock outfit Hollis Brown as we relaxed on a bench outside of the American Legion in East Nashville during this year’s AmericanaFest. Montali and fellow band member Jonathan Bonilla met in high school, and began to write music. “We said, ‘well, now we have songs, we need to get a band together’,” he continues. “We started sneaking into clubs in New York to play, started packing out rooms, ventured to play in places like Philadelphia and D.C. Now we’ve got three albums out and we’re about to do our fifth European tour.” READ MORE…
