PopDust premieres video for “Change Your Mind (You Should Be Mine)” by Sara Rachele

Sara Rachelle

PopDust Premiere

You’re standing alone inside an abandoned warehouse. The lofty coolness is brittle against your skin. The darkness seeps through the cracks of the splintered wood, the moonlight tossing its fingertips along the cement. But in the far corner, there is a waxy, half-burned, charred but dazzling candle–the glow of her voice envelopes and warms you. Sara Rachele, whose timbre is equal parts Dusty Springfield, Stevie Nicks and Kate Bush, has already cemented her position on the fringes of folk, pop and rock, marrying those sensibilities into a flighty and substantial body of work.

2014’s debut record, Diamond Street, set a remarkable precedent, her vocal wrapped neatly and fluidly around hearty stock standouts like “Devil That I Know,” “Appalachian Rain” and the Thomas Hall-assisted number “Don’t Give Me Hell.” Now, with her latest entry in her flourishing catalog, “Change Your Mind (You Should Be Mine)” is pensive and intimately sweeping. “This song is one of those tunes I wrote about one situation, that actually ended up being about something else entirely,” she tells Popdust, who premieres the filtered, black-and-white clip today. PopDust premieres “Family Pet” by Family Pet

PopDust Premiere

“‘I thought they were all o’ one sample, as you may say. But it seems one mustn’t judge by th’ outside’,” English author and journalist George Eliot once penned in his 1860 novel, The Mill on the Floss, from the perspective of the story’s central character, Mr. Tulliver. It is thus one of the earliest usages of the phrase (as we’ve come to know it): don’t judge a book by its cover. Of course, the exact verbiage changed according to the surrounding cultural, mirroring the varied belief system and traveling far beyond the confines of the Victorian Era. Its timeless and universal appeal has permeated every corner of the globe and nearly every aspect of popular art. Grunge-rock punk band Family Pet utilize that phrase for their own reworking of its core themes, flipping the meaning into a biting and authoritative anthem to shatter the patriarchy–named after their band name, naturally. “Family Pet” premieres exclusively today, and you can listen to it in full below. Popdust premieres PopHeart’s “Kuyama Drama”

The inexorable weight of tragedy hung around the Los Angeles punk scene like a thick ghostly mist. And the exact truth surrounding the fatal shooting of Peter Haskell, musician and actor with a wellspring of troubled notions, is murky, at best. Shooter Bruce Kalberg, who had known Haskell for the better part of 30+ years, claimed it was self defense when Haskell allegedly broke into his apartment and spewed a barrage of threats. The District Attorney declined to file charges, and the story stopped there. But in reality, it was only just beginning.

The world of his son Paris Yavuz, from whom he was mostly estranged, shifted dramatically. Medicine’s Beth Thompson, also a close friend of Haskell, unloaded his father’s music equipment at Yavuz’s apartament soon after–and the story took on a new life. Yavuz, who goes by the stage name Popheart, poured his yearning soul into his music. That’s when 2014’s More Me Less You EP came into the picture, a sinister, new wave collection of deeply-rooted stories of the human existence (with a penchant for large hooks and smokey, jittery arrangements).

Now, the singer, songwriter and musician eyes his follow up, jumpstarted with the brooding “Kuyama Drama,” a more adorned darkwave-produced escape with blurred vocals and a sticky core. “[This song] is an emotional recount of the last experience and verbal exchange I shared with a close friend who has passed,” he tells Popdust about the song, premiering exclusively today. “It’s dark, but I didn’t want it to sound that way. I had been listening to New Order’s ‘Bizarre Love Triangle’ almost exclusively when we were recording this track.” READ MORE

Popdust premieres Count Vaseline’s new track, “Bodies”

Much like the rest of the world, the rise of President Donald Trump sent a shockwave through the creative community. Outrage, devastation, sorrow characterized the past four months, sending singers, songwriters and musicians to find solace in their creative endeavors. Count Vaseline found himself pouring his heart out for his new album, Cascade (arriving on Friday, March 31), which contains conversation pieces about the election, the bottom dropping out of reality and how to cope with tragedy. Ahead of the LP, Popdust is beyond honored to share a new track, the sticky and grainy “Bodies,” on which he attests we’re all “bodies in a post-political world, bodies on the move, bodies on the television.”… READ MORE

Popdust premieres The Band Ice Cream’s aggressive, ’90s-influenced new song “Sick Over You”

The band ice cream san francisco Classically Trained

It’s refreshing when a band is as lyrically-aggressive and musically-adventurous as San Fransisco product The Band Ice Cream. Harkening to the days of hair metal and the early ’90s punk-rock of Nirvana, the outfit are readying their long-waited debut full-length, Classically Trained (out everywhere March 10). But don’t be confused by their stylistic identity and unshakable influences, they are uniquely and unapologetically carrying the torch of a new generation of noise makers, clawing their way to the international stage with nothing but fervor and irrefutable talent. You’ll find their new song “Sick Over You”–premiering exclusively today–was as if Kurt Cobain was beamed up from the other side; it’s guitar tones and melodic lean are cut from the same artistic fabric, as well as sheepishly tipping-of-hats to The Doors, too.

But the upend those expectations with the flip of a lyric and a lick of smoldering guitar. “For the longest time we referred to ‘Sick Over You’ as ”90s song’ and it’s pretty obvious why. We all grew up in that era and are familiar with the formula: Four chord verse, big fat chorus, intimate bridge, CA$H CHECK,” shares singer and guitarist Joe Sample. “This one turned out to be one of the most polished songs off the album, which is funny because we threw it together so quickly…We actually ended up using our first take in the studio as the final version.” LISTEN HERE…
