Testimonials for Rachel Hurley

King Corduroy Sample Clips

NPR * Billboard * Wide Open Country * The Boot * Ditty TV * Nashville Scene

“Rachel is a true fan of music and that passion fuels her work ethic. She was always willing to take the time to talk with me on the phone when I needed advice, and she offered me more opportunities than were even a part of her job description. I couldn’t be happier with the results of my campaign and I would recommend Rachel to anyone seeking a publicist! She always finds a way to prioritize your project and will put in the extra hours, even if it’s a weekend. There is no doubt in my mind that if you want to build your brand you MUST have a publicist; it doesn’t matter how good your music is, without the PR it is damn near impossible to get any substantial results when promoting your release.” – King Corduroy

“Rachel and Baby Robot Media took such good care of us by getting us the coverage we felt our music deserved. Rachel’s professionalism, and constant contact kept our team on the same page for the entirety of our campaign and knowing that we had the folks at Baby Robot working on our behalf was quite a relief. We can’t thank Rachel enough for believing in our music, and helping us to cut through the noise, all while considering our busy touring schedule and odd hours. Rachel Hurley is a badass!”  – Luke Mitchell

“Working with Rachel Hurley and BabyRobot was a blast! They took the time to understand who I am as an artist and designed a very specialized powerful campaign just for the release of my new album. I’m looking forward to working with them again on my next release.” – Boo Ray

“I can’t say enough about Rachel and the team at Baby Robot.  This was the best experience I’ve ever had with a PR company.  They worked their asses off and consistently went above and beyond, not only getting us great write-ups and features, but also showing up to shows and posting vids and pics of the band.  They treated us like they were fans and made us feel part of their family and not just another paycheck.  They are a rare exception in the industry.  Thank you Rachel!!” – Casey Shea

Andrew Leahey Sample Clips

Billboard * Ditty TV * Wide Open Country * Rolling Stone * Breakthru Radio

“Rachel understands the music business AND truly understands bands. She’s a champion for real art, and her work goes beyond the cut-and-dry boundaries of a standard PR contract.” – Andrew Leahey

“Rachel was an absolute pleasure to work with! Her dedication and attention to detail were the best I have seen. This process was new to me and she broke it down each step of the way and made sure I was always kept up to date. She was always available whenever I needed and was always working to get my record and name in front of the right people. The amount of press and exposure that came from her hard work was beyond my expectations. I can not recommend her and Baby Robot enough. I will definitely be asking her to work my next record!” – David Quinn

Charles Wesley Godwin Sample Clips

“Rachel Hurley knocked my campaign out of the park! I was a nobody from nowhere, with no following, with a killer album and she, along with the Baby Robot team, got Seneca in all the right hands. They gave me 110% and showed absolute dedication to me. Rachel and the team brought the credibility needed for the music to be heard and speak for itself. I recommend Rachel Hurley and Baby Robot Media with all of my heart!” – Charles Wesley Godwin

“Simply put, Rachel Hurley is a remarkable publicist. Her tenacity, attention to detail and love for what she does makes her an asset to any band looking to give their music the press push and respect and care it deserves. Dominique Pruitt Sample Clips

PopMatters * Rolling Stone * LA Times * Ditty TV * PopDose * Boing Boing

“For an independent artist, it can be scary investing in PR- but it’s also a crucial cog in the music machine! Baby Robot Media and Rachel Hurley, in particular, made the investment worth every damn penny. They truly kicked ass on my campaign and got me some killer press. Rachel was easy as pie to communicate with, quick to respond to everything, and made me feel supported EVERY step of the way. If I had to sum up my experience with Rachel it would be “above and beyond”!” – Dominique Pruitt

Kellen of Troy Sample Clips

Ditty TV * No Depression * PopMatters * American Songwriter * Baeble Music * The Bluegrass Situation

“I’m not sure what’s more impressive about Rachel – her talent or her dedication. I’ve worked with PR companies at all levels, and usually, people only have one or the other. Large brand-name companies have all the talent in the world, but with a bloated client list it’s hard to get individual attention. Smaller boutique companies tend to be highly dedicated to their projects, but often lack the heavy artillery necessary to run a successful campaign. Working with Rachel Hurley and the rest of the Baby Robot crew was a truly wonderful experience as they are the perfect marriage of the two.” – Kellen Wenrich

“Baby Robot Media, and Rachel Hurley, in particular, were an absolute pleasure to work with. We launched the campaign with the goal of getting some national press for our latest release, and Baby Robot delivered. From creating a timeline to maximize impact, to tour support and leveraging local press on the road, to hanging out and drinking beers in Texas, Rachel and the team went above and beyond. Communication was thorough and spot-on, in-depth weekly reports kept us up to date on what was going on, and they managed to make the whole process fun. We’d thoroughly recommend Rachel and the rest of the team at Baby Robot Media for any acts hoping to get their stuff out into the world, and wouldn’t hesitate to work with them again.” – Will Mallett

“Rachel worked her ass off on my campaign and was always available when I needed to talk something through or figure something out.  She also did a great job of getting me to feel comfortable with things that would normally be outside of my comfort zone. It’s rare to find someone that you believe is actually looking out for you and she is that person. She is willing to go above and beyond for her clients. She is also fun to drink with.” – Chuck Westmoreland

“My hero Cowboy Jack Clement used to say people from Memphis speak in parables.  A parable sketches a setting, describes an action, and shows the results.  Which is exactly what Rachel Hurley, my new Memphis hero, has done for us at Coastal Bend Music.  PR is scary, especially for a small label, with the usual tales of costly, failed expectations seemingly the norm.  Rachel and Baby Robot have been the total opposite for us–giving us the plan, taking action on it, and showing us the results.  Rachel’s deep love of music shows up in every step of a campaign, and I never felt my projects were just part of her job, but as important to her as they are to me.  My go to from here on.  Did I mention she’s from Memphis, too?” – John Macy (Coastal Bend Music / Producer)

Matthew Ryan Sample Clips

“The first thing I noticed about Rachel is that she still deeply loves music. All kinds of music. She worked tirelessly on behalf of my last record. She’s smart and communicative. Honest and thorough. She does what she says she’s going to do… And then some. She helped to build one of the most successful campaigns I’ve experienced. And while I don’t know it to be true, I suspect she only takes on the work and music and artists she feels that gut love for. As an artist, that’s how you want to feel when you’re putting out what amounts to your lifeblood, that someone has your back and best interests at hand. And hopefully, those are hardworking and extremely capable hands, like Rachel’s. I’d work with her again in a heartbeat. Can’t recommend her enough.” –  Matthew Ryan

“I can’t tell you the number of publicists I have hired over the years, where I may have literally thrown my money away. PR people will notoriously make big promises, take your money, and then disappear claiming that the album was “a really hard sell”. Well, Rachel not only delivered on all her promises, she literally blew me away with her passion, personal commitment, and faith in our project. I can’t recommend her highly enough.” – Ben Lee

“For me, putting together a hardworking team to work a record is paramount.  At the end of the day, you want to work with someone who will absolutely fight for you.  You want to work with someone who you can call at dang near any time of the day.  Someone who sees your art and believes in it.  That’s what’s important to me, and that’s what I have in Rachel Hurley and Baby Robot Media.  I’ve honestly never worked with someone who is so devoted to work and quality of work.  I’m very lucky to have gotten to work with this team.  I never once felt like I was just a name on a roster in a mass press email.  My album might’ve fallen flat if it wasn’t for Rachel.  She knew my music, saw my vision, and executed the right markets.  I can’t wait to work with them again on down the road.  In short, she’s the best. ”  – Ross Cooper

“Rachel is great to work with. She’s got the perspective it takes to look at the landscape, suss out the opportunities and get ’em in the bag for you. Also, she’s disarmingly friendly and wryly funny. She got us a lot of positive attention and helped us get many miles beyond where we were. “Rachel has to be one of the hardest working people in the business. When an artist signs on with a publicist, there are really no guarantees. The best thing you can do is hire someone with Rachel’s focus and work ethic. I don’t know how many campaigns she was working on simultaneously, but the quality of her service honestly made us feel like we were her only client during our campaign. She provided extremely prompt communication when we had a question or concern and most importantly, she provided results. ” Micah Walk

“Rachel was great for our release. Not only did we receive more press for our album than the previous one, but she also helped us manage the flow of press coming in. We were in Europe when the campaign started and touring the states after that, so things can be forgotten or maximum exposure mismanaged. She continually gave a list of the press to talk about and how it related to our campaign. We then could push on social media and guide social media promotion. She was also available any time I had questions about the campaign and I felt like I got honest input when I asked for it.” – Nick Dittmeier

Farce the Music Premieres New Track from Charlie Overbey w/Eleanor Whitmore, “Trouble Likes Me Best”

Charlie Overbey
Charlie Overbey
Here’s a great new song from Charlie Overbey, a Californian with a southern soul. It’s an anthemic mid-tempo country tune about …well, getting in trouble. What’s more country than that? Joining Charlie with some great backing vocals is Eleanor Whitmore. I don’t want to call it an outlaw song, but it certainly dabbles in the habits and misfortunes of that brand of country. Definitely a great Friday tune and a solid introduction to his forthcoming album, Broken Arrow. Give it a listen!
From Charlie:
“Trouble Likes Me Best” was written about a combo of truths from a trip to the county jail in Nashville to witnessing a couple of stoned young ladies driving onto the highway off-ramp in Los Angeles, CA.

David Allan Coe once said to me while touring together, “I shoulda written that fuckin’ song~!“

But my favorite is that my father used to say, “That’s the best song you ever wrote, son. Who wrote that?”

Cowboys & Indians Premieres new Derek Hoke Video, “Destination Unknown”

Derek Hoke
Derek Hoke

Nashville staple Derek Hoke debuts his new music video for “Destination Unknown,” exclusively with C&I.

Meet the artist: As founder and host of East Nashville’s “$2 Tuesdays” concert series at club The 5 Spot for the past seven years, singer-songwriter Derek Hoke, a native of South Carolina, has made a name for himself around town as a Music City staple. His latest musical venture, the EP Bring the Flood, dives into some of Hoke’s darkest times and the recent heated political atmosphere, giving a new brooding spin on his traditional Americana folk sound.

About the track: Written during a quiet drive through Tennessee, “Destination Unknown” evokes a directionless feeling in response to Hoke’s vivid lyrics about packing up and heading west in search of something he might never find. Aided by steel guitar, organ, and the sharp staccato drums, the single seem to capture in sound a feeling of uncertainty — thoughtful songs for turbulent times.

The singer says: “Most of the songs on the album were written while I was driving. Recorder on my lap. Just singing into it. Early morning drives around rural Tennessee. This song [“Destination Unknown] was written about that. I just made the landscape bigger. It’s about finding what you’re looking for. I’d been listening to a lot of Bob Dylan at the time — specifically, his album Oh Mercy. Really great stuff on that record. It evokes a mood. I wanted to try to do something like that. Create a song set in the dark of night.”

About the video: Filmed in the front seat of Hoke’s car with a handheld camera, the music video for “Destination Unknown” was shot where its lyrics were inspired: driving through Nashville. The natural concept finds Hoke in authentic and original moments, genuinely seeming to experience shades of unease and wonderment…

mxdwn premieres “Tall Place” by Slut Magic

Hailing from Brooklyn, New York, punk rock quartet Slut Magic are clearly okay with a little abrasion. Their debut album has a pretty in-your-face title – In My Mouth – and the album cover features a shot of a women’s not-quite-covered chest. And then of course, there’s the name. Being rough around the edges doesn’t just reflect the visual aesthetic of the band, it also has bearing on their music. Today we have the premiere of the first song from In My Mouth, a song that burns slowly through the verses before pummeling the listener with sludgy chorus that along with the loud-quiet dynamic of the song structure recalls Bleach-era Nirvana.

The band was formed by singer/violinist Emma Sky with a little bit of inspiration from designer Lauren Ruicci – who both found the use of the word “slut” to be empowering and beautiful, hence the band name. They will be releasing their debut album through their own label, Laruicci Records, which comes out on April 13.

Sky created the band out of growing tired with her main band, which was called Violint Wednesday. When the rest of the band, which at the time included Michael Bottomley, Marc Hall and Alex Baker suggested they start playing completely fresh music, the idea for the name Slut Magic came to Sky, who recalled her and Ruicci’s ideas about the word “slut.” The current lineup of the band includes Sky, Bottomley (aka Hot Boyfriend) and Sir Marc Hall. Pop Matters Premieres “Are You Ready For Some Hanky Panky” by Leslie Tom

Leslie Tom
Leslie Tom

With her new single, Leslie Tom poses the question: “Are You Ready For Some Hanky Panky?” The artist’s frisky play on words is actually in tribute to Hank Williams, taking listeners straight back to a 1950s honky-tonk with its classic country sound. Featuring jazz-infused electric guitar riffs and old-school pedal steel licks, Tom exchanges verses with Dean Miller as they dish the dirt on Williams’ life and times. The “hanky panky” under the spotlight comes in at the chorus, where Tom and Miller ask their audience the question in an energetic ode to the country legend.

When asked by PopMatters who some of her inspirations are, Tom said, “Hank Williams, his music inspires my own. My step-dad, Jim Rogers, he showed me what true, unconditional love was. My dad, Bob Alexander, gave me work ethic and a value system that is a firm foundation in how I approach everything in life; with honesty and integrity even when both of those things would be easier to forget.”

She also tells us that if she were able to travel anywhere in time, it would be to 1950s Alabama so she could meet Hank for herself. So, Tom’s admiration for the country icon certainly runs deep, and that much is as evident on this tune as it is throughout the rest of her upcoming album, Ain’t It Something, Hank Williams. The ten-track album isn’t your ordinary tribute album, featuring original songs wherein Tom reflects on the impact Williams has had on her career and her life. It was released via Coastal Bend on 23 March.

B-Sides and Badlands Interviews Leslie Tom

Leslie Tom
Leslie Tom

When Leslie Tom weeps, as she does so rather profusely with “Angel of Death,” a little known Hank Williams b-side, paired to 1954’s post-humous single “(I’m Gonna) Sing, Sing, Sing,” you feel the cold, blunt weight of every syllable. Tom has a way of penetrating your soul. The singer, who returns with her first new full-length in 12 years, a tribute record called Ain’t It Something, Hank Williams (out now), manages to rebuild the Williams cut into a chilling composition. “When The Angel of Death comes down after you, can you smile and say that you have been true? Can you truthfully say, with your dying breath, that you’re ready to meet the Angel of Death?” she sings, unpacking her own bruised psyche and brushes with death into a stormy wallop of a vocal performance.

Tom’s version remains firmly planted in the Williams original, fleshed out with fuller production and harmony work and ominous dobro playing from Andy Hall, of the Infamous Stringdusters. “The song spoke to me in a way his other songs do not,” she tells B-Sides & Badlands. Tom struck some good luck in purposely seeking out such an obscure Williams song, allowing herself to be pulled in the right direction by fate. “Since I’m in a place in my own life where mortality is ever-present with aging parents, a child and husband to think about before myself and facing the loss of a parent, the words of the song run through my head often in my own daily routine,” she says.
