PopMatter’s Premieres Johnny Dango’s “Strange to Change”

On it, the Austin-based singer-songwriter envelopes himself in mellow and ethereal guitar and pedal-centric tones. A toned-down tune of yearning and reverie, it evokes a melancholic, cosmic vibe that can yet again be called a “reflective honky-tonk in outer space”.

Yet, there’s something more here, too. As the Dango grows deeper into this particular sound that he’s been developing, he is more irreverent, more relaxed and assured that what he’s doing feels as right for him as it always has for our ears.

This newfound confidence beats through the track, especially as it builds in its calming intensity. Near the track’s end, Dango‘s backing vocals layer on top of one another in a Sun King-esque manner as he pleads with himself and the world to “try to smile”. It won’t be surprising if many do when giving this track a listen. He is, after all, growing more into his shoes as folk-rock’s answer to Sturgill Simpson. READ MORE…

Los Angeles-based indie rock-Americana band Kat Myers & the Buzzards are happy to premiere their new track “Another Town” here at Indie Minded, a track that appears on their upcoming EP release, Owe Everybody Money, out November 17th.

Sometimes you have to take the leap of faith if you feel strongly about something, and Kat Myers did just that:

In 2012, Kat Myers had a solid, stable job in New York City, a steady, long-term relationship, a great apartment, and a dog. She though she might even get engaged before too long. “This is about to be my life,” Myers thought. For many people, checking off these boxes would be enough. But Myers wanted something more.

Derek Hoke Talks About First Concert Ever with Digital Tour Bus

Derek Hoke

In this First Concert Ever segment, the Americana artist, Derek Hoke, talks about his first concert ever.

I grew up in a small town in South Carolina. The closest thing to a show when I was growing up was seeing punk bands at a run-down schoolhouse or the local VFW.

My first REAL concert came when my Dad took me to see The Rolling Stones in Clemson, SC. I brought my high school buddy, Scooter (yes, Scooter), along for the experience.

Scooter and I spent the day in the small college town smoking bad weed and wandering through the local shops. I’m sure my Dad was walking around doing the same. We all met up later at the gates for the big show.

Derek Hoke Interviewed by Music City Mike

Derek Hoke

There’s a lot of ways to make great Americana music. Singer-songwriter Derek Hoke comes at it in a laidback sultry style with smooth vocals and a mellow electric guitar. To me, he’s the Roy Orbison of the East Nashville music scene.

Over the years, Music City has become blessed with some regular weekly events that provide something special on any given night of the week. If it’s a Tuesday night and you’re not at The Basement for “New Faces Nite,” you need to be at “Two Dollar Tues” at The 5 Spot. Hosted by Hoke for seven years, this weekly event has been a showcase for many notable up-and-coming artists as well as a great time to hear Derek’s music.

Hoke had this to say to NPR about the $2 cover charge and $2 beer night: “I call it a speed showcase. Everybody plays five songs, and I tell them to play the ‘best of’ — you know, get up there, kill and get off. There’s somebody coming up right after you, and we have to plow through this thing.”

In addition to his Tuesday night gig, Derek plays festivals and tours in support of his fine musical catalog. 2016’s “Southern Moon” received high praise from both Rolling Stone and the Nashville Scene and his latest, “Bring the Flood” has just been released.

Radnor & Lee Create Playlist for Tidal

Radnor & Lee (musician Ben Lee and actor Josh Radnor) are out with their debut, self-titled album on November 10. To celebrate their partnership, the duo put together a playlist of uplifting tracks to get you through the gloomy months.

Ben Lee

Jonathan Richman, “My Love is a Flower”
For me, Jonathan Richman was the beginning of understanding that being happy and positive was sometimes the most punk rock choice you could make. I would say he might be my single biggest influence. His whole attitude was just glorious, childlike and positive. I love the vulnerability of seeing our ability to love as a flower just beginning to bloom.

Donovan, “Happiness Runs”
This song was written by my father-in-law and is almost like a meditation on the way that positive mindset changes the world, one thought at a time. ‘Happiness runs in a circular motion…everybody is a part of everything, anyway.’ These are important mantras to lift us up when we are down. It always makes me smile.

Daniel Johnston, “Speeding Motorcycle”
This song, and especially the version Daniel recorded with Yo La Tengo live on radio, affected me profoundly as a teenager, and it still does. The sense of freedom, possibility and the unknown is so palpable in this recording. Of course, being a Daniel Johnston song, there is a feeling of being slightly unhinged not too far from the surface. But above all, this song makes me feel like a puppy putting my head out the window of a car and enjoying the wind in my face, smiling ear to ear.
