8 Inch Betsy will be releasing their posthumous sophomore album, The Mean Days, November 13 on 307 Knox Records. It will be the much-loved Chicago band’s first full-length since 2007’s This Time Last Time Every Time, andDeath and Taxes is honored to be premiering a track off the album: the blistering, emotionally raw “Uh Oh.”

“‘Uh Oh’ is like that moment where you realize the shit is going to hit the fan and you need to hold on,” bassist Eli Burke said of the song. That urgency is reflected in the recording, which begins with sharp, tense guitars before shifting into full-propulsion mode. 8 Inch Betsy’s frontwoman Meghan Galbraith wasn’t just a driving force in Chicago’s queercore scene — she was a beacon of warmth in the city’s community as a whole. Despite her grizzled punk rock exterior and demeanor, her numerous friends are quick to celebrate her remarkable sense of empathy. It’s something she showcased in every aspect of her life, whether she was shredding on stage with her band, volunteering at the Girls Rock! Chicago youth music program, or chatting up Mayor Rahm Emmanuel at local bars. That’s why so many people across the community were devastated this past January when she passed away suddenly after a year-long illness.

Though she may be gone, Galbraith still has one more offering for the city and her fans. Over the course of the past five years, 8 Inch Betsy slowly recorded and tweaked tracks for the follow-up to their 2007 debut album, This Time, Last Time, Every Time. Now the band is releasing their final record, The Mean Days, on November 13th via 307 Knox Records. East Nashville’s Aaron Lee Tasjan traveled to Los Angeles to record this debut. But these songs full of humorous, wry, sometimes snarky lyrics steeped in the American South, although often informed by the similarly-skewed sensibility of Randy Newman.

The Ohio-bred singer/songwriter/guitarist’s name might be unfamiliar to most, yet those who inspect liner notes might recognize his credit on Jesse Malin and Pat Green albums. He also served time in the trenches playing in later versions of the New York Dolls and Drivin’ N Cryin’ as well as assisting Kevn Kinney, who became somewhat of a mentor, on Kinney’s 2012 Good Country Mile release. The members of the fraction stood outside a New York City venue after their awesome performance smoking cigarettes and just having fun. All of them incredible musicians, talented vocalists, and a mix between Black Sabbath, and The Black keys, tainted with Led Zeppelin. Their newest single Gone,Gone, Gone, is an essential song that has got to be experienced.

Immersive Atlanta debuts new live video of Sara Rachele performing “When the Fire Goes Out Tonight”

Recorded live in East Atlanta’s Brownwood Park, Sara Rachele’s new video, “When the Fire Goes Out Tonight,” accentuates much of what we’ve grown to know and love about the songwriter. The song is an intimate, semi-confessional oeuvre on broken love and forgiveness that succeeds on the strength of its stark simplicity and Rachele’s lyrical honesty: “Ooh honey, when the fire goes out tonight / I’ll tell you that I will never lie / Believe me, you have my heart in mind / At least when the fire goes out tonight.” Her vocals, always alluring and generously coated in rustic Southern charm, here sound more subdued that normal, drifting between a wintery mix of sadness and romantic yearning while she effortlessly fingerpicks the song’s forlorn melody on her acoustic.

Directed by Brent Lambert-Zaffino, the accompanying video wisely maintains the song’s unadorned simplicity, allowing Rachele’s expressive hooks to lead and guide the action. It’s certainly warmer and more lighthearted — much of the footage features Rachele smiling or laughing — although the video’s black and white palette helps mute some of the cheer. It’s a fairly straightforward production that manages to feel poetic and ethereal, offering a sense of comfort and stability that somehow accents rather than negates her wistful musings. WATCH HERE…
