PopMatters premieres Nikki & the Phantom Callers’ new single, “Prodigal Daughter”

Atlanta outfit Nikki & the Phantom Callers makes you wanna break out your transistor radio with new tune, “Prodigal Daughter”.

Drawing a wide range of influences that span from 1960s pop country to psychedelic and garage rock, Atlanta’s Nikki & the Phantom Callers issue their debut single “Prodigal Daughter” / “Mamas Should Know” on July 27. The first side, “Prodigal Daughter,” burns with the passion and heartache of an AM radio anthem, replete with hot hooks and a haunting vocal performance that soothes as much as it unsettles.

The track is a feminine exploration of the prodigal son story, the tale of how you can come home again after having lived a wild, wild life. The track features Nikki Speake on lead vocals for verses two and four and Anna Kramer (Anna Kramer & The Lost Cause, the Rock *A*Teens) on one and three. The women, who also spend time in Shantih Shantih offer some deep vocal interplay along the way as well.

Speake recalls the origins of the song, saying, “I’d had the line ‘been around the world shakin’ your tambourine’ in my head for a while and wanted to elaborate. It developed into a call and response song between a mother and a daughter, with the mother full of worry and grief over a rambling daughter. I had a pretty strict Southern Baptist upbringing, going to church three times a week for most of my youth, and I still have all of those biblical stories twisting around in my head. It seems like it naturally took its place as the name of the song for all of those reasons.”

She adds, “The Prodigal Son story has made its way into many modern songs. At the time, I was thinking about my own life and having a bit of a gypsy spirit. I’ve always daydreamed about traveling and having adventures, and usually found a way to make them happen much to my poor grandmother’s dismay. So many times I’d leave with her in tears and have to stuff down my guilt to go experience the world. So, I do think this has a feminist twist, in that traditionally women are the ones expected to stay home to be caregivers and to keep families together seamlessly. It’s typically more acceptable for men to have their rite of passage from rebellion to redemption, while women are more harshly judged. Ultimately, it’s about growing and learning who you are in the world– that it’s okay to rebel, to have a selfish period and to screw up, but have faith that the ones at home worrying about you will welcome you back without judgment. It’s also about the responsibility and heartache of being a parent because you have to know when to let go and believe the ones you love will find their way back home.” READ MORE …

Metal Riot premieres Foxbat’s new single “White T(h)rash”

Hey rockers. Today we have a ripping and rollicking new single called “White T(h)rash” for you from Foxbat. It was awesome to find out the hard hitting hardcore and rock n roll influenced act had a song for us about white privilege being a real problem, since there are enough ignorant types out there in the world who think otherwise and since I am always trying to get people to watch 13th on Netflix. It doesn’t mean white people can’t have had hard lives, rather that they also don’t have to deal with institutional racism on top of it.

Props to the band, who fans of ETID and their ilk will be super stoked on, for confronting this important topic despite the potential to get shit from bigoted edgelord trolls. READ MORE…

Nikki & the Phantom Callers share new single at Cowboys & Indians

Indie country group Nikki & The Phantom Callers debut their song “Mamas Should Know,” exclusively with C&I.

Every once in a while, you get a song that really transports you back in time. Up-and-coming country group Nikki & The Phantom Callers’ new track, “Mamas Should Know,” takes it one step farther, blending the psychedelic ’70s with spaghetti western melodies of the Wild West.

“To me, the ethos of the song is that of searching and longing to find who we are meant to be,” says Alabama-born, Atlanta-based lead singer Nikki Speake. “We could have been born anywhere, to anyone, but why did we end up in the place and time that we did? There are a million ways to go wrong and screw it up without proper guidance, which many don’t have, but at some point you’ll lose your guides — voluntarily or involuntarily. What will happen then? What will you do with the knowledge you’re given?”

The song also reminisces about childhood. “It’s a magical time when you believe in all the things that are unreal,” Speake says. “There’s an unmistakable sadness in growing older and having to meet others’ expectations while feeling some of that magic slip away. A lot of us lose it earlier than most through whatever tragedies or misfortunes come our way, forcing us to face an adult world before we are ready.”

That ethos comes wrapped in twangy guitar strums, bluesy guitar licks, and bouncy drums. And then there’s Speake’s beautifully haunting voice and her equally absorbing lyrics, which combine to create a melancholic, sentimental, and sober tone.

As much as the song evokes the universal poignancy of childhood, it’s also extremely personal to Speake: “The lyric in question, for me, is about losing my own mother when I was 12,” she says. “I had so many loving and beautiful people in my life to take care of me, but still so many unanswered questions that only one person could answer. Some have time to reflect and tell their loved ones what was important to them, or what they felt life truly means before they go; others go abruptly with only memories and pictures to fill in the gaps. It’s about asking all of us to leave a little more behind for those that love us, and also an endless quest for just a bit more of that magical place.”

Lapel shares new single, “Lead Me Back to You,” at Atwood Magazine

Some attractions are too strong for us to ignore; for whatever reason, we find ourselves coming back to the same person again and again, despite our best attempts to fight the feeling. From an outsider’s perspective, it makes sense – there might be something there – but when we’re in the thick of it, we don’t see all the moving pieces; we just go from moment to moment, running like mice through a maze. Often it’s important to take a step back, out of your situation and your whole world, in order to understand (and deal with) yourself. Lapel’s rich, dreamy single “Lead Me Back to You” finds a moment of clarity within an introspective escape, blending deep emotion with vibrant sound to create a memorable and meaningful listening experience. Simon Patrick Kerr’s new LP Doldrums streams in full at Americana UK

‘Doldrums’ is the new album by Simon Patrick Kerr, and it aptly couldn’t come at a better time what with the absolute state of parliament this week – for the new record Kerr forgoes the rowdy psych-rock of his band The Wans in favor of a more stripped-down approach to songwriting, crafting intensely personal Americana and indie-folk songs inspired by Nashville-outsider heroes like Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark, while chronicling one of the more tumultuous periods in his life including the grief of losing a close friend to cancer and the commodification of religion in the Bible Belt. Described as “once stripped-down and symphonic” by Rolling Stone no less, it’s a lovely listen.  ‘Doldrums’ is out on Friday. READ MORE…
