The Wild Honey Pie features Misty Boyce’s new single “I Don’t Wanna Be Yer Gurl”

misty boyce los angeles get lost

Misty Boyce explores a more raucous sound in “I Don’t Wanna Be Yer Gurl.” Overdrive and riotous lyrics step away from the straight-forward piano-driven indie-pop goodness that has landed her tickets with Sara Barielles, Mumford and Sonsand The Lumineers, to name a few. Boyce’s forthcoming LP, Get Lost, tackles the darker walks of her path thus far; death, drugs, religion and fame. “I Don’t Wanna Be Yer Gurl” captures the conflicted defiance in walking away from a romance gone awry. Misty Boyce shares new single “Get Lost” at Earbuddy

misty boyce los angeles get lost

On February 16th, LA-based singer/songwriter Misty Boyce will release her third album, Get Lost. Misty Boyce has long been a sought-after keyboardist; backing such artists as Sara Bareilles, Sting, Ingrid Michaelson, and most recently touring with BØRNS. Her new album is an honest exploration of Boyce’s life, tackling everything from her Evangelical upbringing to her stepfather’s suicide. Today, we premiere the title track from the new album.

“Get the fuck off of your phone,” Boyce pleads on the outro of the title track, with its chilling organ stabs pulsing over a hypnotic and sparse backbeat. “Sometimes when I hear that lyric, I start to cry. I want it so badly. I want to get off my phone. I want other people to get off their phone. I want us all to stop judging each other by how our life looks on social media. I don’t want to be held to the impossible standards we put on ourselves.” READ MORE…

Kellen Of Troy Premieres New Track “When You Don’t Hear Goodbye”

Kellen of Troy

Breakups are never easy. They’re especially tough pills to swallow, though, when you don’t know where things went wrong. Nashville-based act Kellen of Troy (the project of musician Kellen Wenrich) explores that unique brand of heartbreak on a new track, “When You Don’t Hear Goodbye.”

Off Wenrich’s forthcoming solo debut Posthumous Release, “When You Don’t Hear Goodbye” is a hardscrabble honky-tonk ballad inspired, in part, by an actual recent breakup. “I wrote this tune shortly after getting out of a bad relationship and was relieved to be on the other side of it,” he says. “I wanted a different perspective for the record, however, so I feigned the heartbreak and came up with ‘When You Don’t Hear Goodbye.’”

Wenrich, who once played in the now-defunct Apache Relay, counts among his influences Neil Young, John Prine, and “saloon pianos in Western movies.” Postumous Release follow’s Wenrich’s acclaimed 2016 EP Sad Bastard.

Posthumous Release is out February 16.

Essential 8: Jamie McLean

Jamie McLean Band
Jamie McLean Band

Jamie McLean Band – Jamie McLean (guitar and vocals), Brian Griffin (drums) and Ben Mars (bass) – is gearing up to release their long awaited new album One and Only on February 23rd. Recorded at the famed Sound Emporium and produced by Ken Coomer (Wilco), One and Only captures the band’s strongest songwriting to date on eleven tracks that incorporate New Orleans soul, Delta blues, middle America roots, and New York City swagger. In advance of the album’s release, McLean kindly took the time to answer his Essential 8 and talk all things songwriting, his favorite venue, and much more!

With any particular song, was there an “a-ha” moment when you knew the song was completedand perfect?
There were a couple of songs that I brought to the studio with me for One and Only that were solid and finished but something was missing.  When I sat down in the studio with producer Ken Coomer (Wilco, Uncle Tupelo) he asked me to play the songs and when we finished he gave me some simple directions.  “Sing It” was one that we’ve done as a band for years in a bluesy shuffle style.  He asked me “What would it sound like if Keith Richards wrote this?”Literally a minute later I had the riff and groove for the new version and I love it!

Cool Hunting praises Abhi the Nomad’s new single “Marbled”

In a true fusion of genres, Abhi The Nomad blends hip-hop, electronic, jazz and more on “Marbled” from his EP of the same name. The bop changes up in rhythm (while remaining super-catchy) as his flow remains effortless and flawless. Previous tunes by the musician have been more indie/rock influenced; this new release leans toward pop, and his ability to touch on so many styles effectively is echoed throughout the EP. SONG OF THE WEEK KELLEN OF TROY, ‘VICTIM OF APATHY’

Kellen of Troy
Kellen of Troy

It’s never easy to break away from what’s comfortable, especially when that comfort comes in the form of bandmates. Going solo, after being one of a few, is a tricky endeavor, and leaving the pack to pave new or different ground comes with no built-in assurances. It works for some (Sting), and not so well for others (basically anyone in any boy band from the early 2000s except the lead singer).

Multi-instrumentalist Kellen Wenrich is known for his role as fiddle player in Apache Relay, but now he’s witnessing a bit of a rebirth as Kellen of Troy — his new nom de plum. And thus it makes the title of his forthcoming LP, Posthumous Release, all the more amusing: It’s death and birth, all at once. And “Victim of Apathy,” the new single from the collection, shows his love of well-crafted folk-rock with a pop-ish sheen and built on the classics, like the Beatles with a surfy gloss. Here, he studies a very modern plague: apathy. In a world with lots of opinions but little substance, it’s easy to be a victim of it — in relationships and simply in life. Or even in a band. Through “Victim of Apathy,” Kellen of Troy discovers, in some infectious melodies, that an existence cut down the middle is a life not worth a damn. Nothing apathetic about that.
