Louderthanwar interviews the always charismatic Ian Saint Pé before his CMJ performance at The Bowery Electric.

Former Black Lips guitarist, Ian Saint Pé has gone solo and has come out with a pop, almost sunny, garage trash single, entitled “Street Lights”, with vocals very reminiscent to that of Tom Petty, only with a New Orleans flair.

Moments before Ian was to take the stage at the CBGB – like venue Bowery Electric, in New York City, I was able to catch a few minutes with him. He appeared borderline mysterious, and certainly intriguing, reminding me of Tom Cruise in the movie, “Interview With A Vampire“. I felt nearly compelled to cover my neck as we spoke about his new solo project. READ MORE…

Nylon calls 8 Inch Betsy “the coolest female-fronted queer band”

8 inch betsy the mean days meghan galbraith eli burke Melissa Thomas 307 Knox Records chicago NYLON

8 Inch Betsy is a female-fronted queercore punk band from Chicago. Earlier this year, the band’s frontwoman Meghan Galbraith passed away, leaving a finished album behind. In Galbraith’s honor, 8 Inch Betsy will be releasing their posthumous sophomore album, The Mean Days on November 13 via 307 Knox Records. Today, NYLON premieres their brand new single “Reformatory School.” It’s a song about falling in love too easily and being told who to be instead of knowing yourself. Bassist Eli Burke shared the following in an email:
“Meghan usually recorded new songs in Garageband. Then she would email them to me asking what I thought. We lived together, almost under the tracks of the Brown Line in Chicago. It was super loud. This is what she wrote about the Reformatory School demo: ‘I had a little fun recording this. You can hear the train like crazy cuz I was in the living room. There is a fuck up near the end that I don’t feel like fixing. And the end needs an outro still. Let me know if you like it, or don’t.’ LISTEN HERE…

Death+Taxes takes an in-depth looks at 8 Inch Betsy’s song “Uh Oh”

8 inch betsy the mean days meghan galbraith eli burke Melissa Thomas 307 Knox Records chicago death and taxes uh oh

8 Inch Betsy will be releasing their posthumous sophomore album, The Mean Days, November 13 on 307 Knox Records. It will be the much-loved Chicago band’s first full-length since 2007’s This Time Last Time Every Time, andDeath and Taxes is honored to be premiering a track off the album: the blistering, emotionally raw “Uh Oh.”

“‘Uh Oh’ is like that moment where you realize the shit is going to hit the fan and you need to hold on,” bassist Eli Burke said of the song. That urgency is reflected in the recording, which begins with sharp, tense guitars before shifting into full-propulsion mode. Singer and guitarist Meghan Galbraith’s intense, howling vocals add impassioned weight to the song’s lyrics, which consider how tenuous a hold we actually have on the things we depend upon for stability and security: LISTEN HERE…

Consequence of Sound premieres 8 Inch Betsy’s latest “Meant to Mean”

8 inch betsy the mean days meghan galbraith eli burke Melissa Thomas 307 Knox Records chicago Consequence of sound meant to mean

8 Inch Betsy’s frontwoman Meghan Galbraith wasn’t just a driving force in Chicago’s queercore scene — she was a beacon of warmth in the city’s community as a whole. Despite her grizzled punk rock exterior and demeanor, her numerous friends are quick to celebrate her remarkable sense of empathy. It’s something she showcased in every aspect of her life, whether she was shredding on stage with her band, volunteering at the Girls Rock! Chicago youth music program, or chatting up Mayor Rahm Emmanuel at local bars. That’s why so many people across the community were devastated this past January when she passed away suddenly after a year-long illness.

Though she may be gone, Galbraith still has one more offering for the city and her fans. Over the course of the past five years, 8 Inch Betsy slowly recorded and tweaked tracks for the follow-up to their 2007 debut album, This Time, Last Time, Every Time. Now the band is releasing their final record, The Mean Days, on November 13th via 307 Knox Records. Ahead of the release, the band is treating us to a sample of Galbraith’s final work with their latest single, “Meant to Mean”. LISTEN HERE…

American Songwriter Magazine reviews Aaron Lee Tasjan’s debut LP, In the Blazes

Aaron Lee Tasjan Americana In the Blazes Drivin' N Cryin' Kevn Kinney New York Dolls Alberta Cross american songwriter magazine review

East Nashville’s Aaron Lee Tasjan traveled to Los Angeles to record this debut. But these songs full of humorous, wry, sometimes snarky lyrics steeped in the American South, although often informed by the similarly-skewed sensibility of Randy Newman.

The Ohio-bred singer/songwriter/guitarist’s name might be unfamiliar to most, yet those who inspect liner notes might recognize his credit on Jesse Malin and Pat Green albums. He also served time in the trenches playing in later versions of the New York Dolls and Drivin’ N Cryin’ as well as assisting Kevn Kinney, who became somewhat of a mentor, on Kinney’s 2012 Good Country Mile release. The names of Tasjan’s previous bands alone—Semi-Precious Weapons and the Madison Square Gardeners—display his sardonic humor. READ MORE…
