SEX BBQ’s Wake Up is Speakers in Code’s Jam of the Day

If their name wasn’t enough — look, getting an email with the words SEX BBQ in the subject line is startling but awesome — Atlanta’s SEX BBQ has outdone themselves with their first single, “Wake Up”. The combination of the childlike lead vocals and concertina on the verses with the heavy guitars and menacing lilt of the chorus gives the track a weirdly innocent eeriness — or maybe an eerie innocence. It’s part punk rock, part nursery rhyme, and all terrifically unique, unlike anything else I’ve heard this year.

It’s kind of the perfect track for a haunting season in October, for the grey skies and earlier darkness of the fall; look behind your doors and under your bed before you go to bed, because SEX BBQ might be waiting for you. LISTEN HERE…

Noisey streams Al Lover’s new record Sacred Drugs, saying he is “quite literally the only one who does what he does”

I first met Al Lover in a dewy backyard in San Francisco. Some friends were throwing a (mostly) garage-rock show with a few bands, and Al was set up in the corner to DJ in between sets. I expected what I usually expect when I see a DJ in San Francisco- two laptops, a cross-fade, and a playlist that switches back and forth from a Sonny & The Sunsets song to a Ty Segall song with a completely different BPM. This was not the case with Al Lover.

Al Lover is most well-known for his ability to be a non-synthy/trappy/basic beat-maker, and instead a psych-producer- which is very #rare and extremely rad. He is quite literally the only one who does what he does. The psych-lover’s dream layers shaky drum beats over contemporary and vintage garage-psych jams. Dude even refers to his own beats as “Al Lover’s Distorted Reverberations of Reverberating Distortion.” Noisey is stoked to be premiering his new record, Sacred Drugs, a 14-track kaleidoscopic journey that you should probably recommend to any of your burner friends who want to chill inside of a teepee at Burning Man and “vibe out, broooooo.” Seriously though, this album rules. Pure Volume premieres Tesla Rossa’s new single “Movie Houses,” comparing the Nashville band’s “slow-burning balladry” to Brand New and Manchester Orchestra

Tesla Rossa are gearing up to release their self-titled debut album next month, and today we’re excited to premiere its latest offering, “Movie Houses.” Produced by Vance Powell (Jack White, The Dead Weather, Arctic Monkeys), this song showcases the alt-rockers’ knack for slow-burning balladry and solidifies their comparisons to the likes of Brand New and Manchester Orchestra. “‘Movie Houses’ was written during a time in our lives when we were trying to go off the map from a social standpoint,” vocalist Jason Denton explains. “Get out of the Nashville party scene and really get to work. The band all moved into a house together in East Nashville, and started writing and demoing music every night—getting more experimental.

“The same way I tend to lean on an “amp-cranked-to-10, sparkle-crunchy rip-your-face-off” guitar tone, [our lead guitarist] Ryan is the exact opposite. ‘Movie Houses’ was originally loud when I wrote it. Very loud. A booming, monstrous kind of thing. But after touring on it a bit, we started to discover the dynamic of what was happening between us on stage. It morphed into a song where Ryan gets to have his really soft, dark string-plucking moments, I get to have my loud moments, and [our drummer] Nathan somehow segues the two moods with an hypnotic beat. Then we threw in a sort of PB & Jam into the middle of it all.

“We cut this track live to two-inch tape with Vance Powell, who’s worked with Jack White, The Raconteurs and The Dead Weather. At his studio, we put these these newly discovered dynamics into action. The strings on the track were actually the very last thing we overdubbed for the record.”

Flavorwire Premiere: Grand Vapids’ “Losing” Finds Inspiration in Ralph Ellison’s ‘Invisible Man’

Athens, Georgia’s Grand Vapids are a throwback to indie rock’s not-so-distant past. I hear multiple musical scenes in the corners of their songs, from mid-career Wilco to Elephant 6 band Beulah to Built to Spill to Kurt Vile. If you’ve kept up with guitar music over the last decade or two, you’ll likely find something to enjoy within Grand Vapids’ music. And if you’ve made the transition from going to school to working for a living (so most of us here, I’d say), then you’ll probably relate to Grand Vapids’ “Losing,” which Flavorwire is pleased to premiere below. CraveOnline Music interviews The Wans at Austin City Limits Music Festival (ACL) about CMJ Fest, SXSW & ebola

Before the festivities here in Texas wind down completely, as Austin City Limits 2014 draws to a close, CraveOnline’s Johnny Firecloud speaks with Nashville rockers The Wans.

Going forward, from ACL 2014 and beyond, the group is looking to build momentum among the music-loving community, going from festival to festival to share their tunes with as many folks as possible. In fact, The Wans is planning to perform at South by Southwest next year, and is really excited about the opportunity. “We’re still waiting on details, but we’re hoping to be back here in March for that,” one of the band members said.

But what about the road ahead, once SXSW 2015 is a thing of the past? After their upcoming bout of touring is done, they plan to get back to writing so they can start putting together their next album. The goal is to have a new record out by next year, which will undoubtedly please fans hungry for more of their rockin’ music.

Impose interviews ZONERS frontman Matt McCalvin and premieres the band’s badass new video for “X2 VISION”

From Atlanta, Georgia; Matt McCalvin of Gringo Star, Mermaids, and Dinos Boys has been rampaging with friends about the ATL with his new band, Zoners, who debut their dizzying video for “X2 Vision”. Found off their 7” split with fellow friendly locals Onchi, and to be featured on the upcoming album, Chill ‘Em All for their own Destroy Music imprint; McCalvin and friends cause a ruckus in the following visual episode that rages about like the most one of the insane gatherings imaginable; where a spirited anarchy breaks out as if all the authority figures just left town.

On the premiere of Zoners’ “X2 Vision” video from Dasher’s Kelly Stroup and Max Siciliano, a tube television is smashed up as the band throws a yard party with their friends. Fun with air-soft guns, early Halloween masks, fireworks, flags, sparklers, skateboards sends out seizure inducing visions of what looks like a three month Fourth of July bender amongst an excited group of friends. Zoners take their ‘Kill Your Television’ type of rage, and drop you into a zone of seeing double, where you can only begin to wonder what their neighbors are making of the rapid thrashing guitar histrionics, amongst mixing Budweisers and crossbows. In a video made to match the relentless energy of the band, Zoners present a primer of everything you should not do at home, or at friends houses, keeping super charged frenetic pace pumping. “X2 Vision” itself was recorded with the rage of a live Zoners performance while the video presents the wildest, privy, and impromptu performance piece that feels like the craziest backyard/frontyard/house party right before the cops break it up.
