Indie-folk outfit Book Club’s new LP Dust of Morning receives “7 out of 10” from Americana UK

book club atlanta dust of morning

Apparently inspired by founding frontman, guitarist, singer and songwriter Robbie Horlick’s travels in Europe, Book Club’s third album, ‘Dust of Morning’ shows the Atlanta-based ensemble demonstrating a growing maturity that has them deserving of a wider audience. That isn’t to say these songs appear inspired by a particular place or places as such – the meditative and reflective nature of this indie-folk typified by the track, ‘Space Between The Days’ from which the album title is drawn: “If the dust of morning shakes/ Itself off you in great escapes/It will return to say its peace/Rearranged but thick as thieves.” Plus ca change, plus c’est la meme chose, as the French might put it.

Horlick’s vocal on many of the songs has a somewhat nasally sounding intonation, reminding one a bit like an American version of Steven Adams from ?the Broken Family Band?. It takes some getting used to, which is why the songs in which he either alternates singing duties with Lauren Love, the band’s new pianist, such as ‘Every Song, Another Question’ or where she sings solo on ‘So Many Nights’ take on another dimension entirely – indeed, the band might benefit from giving her the lead more frequently in future. ‘So Many Nights’ is very much a highlight, Love’s sad, yearning vocal allied to a dramatic mid section which contrasts nicely with the opening verse. Anti Music Presents Charlie Overbey’s “Slip Away”

Charlie Overbey
Charlie Overbey

Charlie Overbey will be releasing his new album “Broken Arrow” tomorrow, April 20th, to celebrate we asked him to tell us the story behind the single “Slip Away” which features Miranda Lee Richards. Here is the story:

“Slip Away’ was written directly following the loss of someone in my deep inner circle that was ruled to be an accident but to me seemed a suicide. I tend to like to leave things to the imagination and incorporate–especially in dark times–elements of hope. I did not feel the need to mention suicide–nobody needs to be thinking about or even reminded that this is an option.

I do think that in times of despair, people tend to find warmth in darkness, which is a trick of the mind as referred to in my favorite line in the song: ‘And then you gimme’ that look / yeah you gimme that look, like you’re never comin’ back again / like you’ve crawled down into a deep dark hole / and it’s warm like the house of a friend.’

The mind is a strange place which can turn dark to darker or vice versa with ease. ‘Slip Away’ is definitely one of the deepest songs I’ve ever written and a personal favorite for that reason. It’s a somber song about loss and was a very tough one to deliver while tracking the vocal. Miranda Lee Richards, who sang this duet with me, was amazing to work with on this track. She was perfect for it and I knew it before she ever sang a note.”

Glide Magazine Premieres Chuck Westmoreland’s New LP “Long Winter Rodeo”

Chuck Westmoreland
Chuck Westmoreland

Portland, Or.-based Americana singer-songwriter Chuck Westmoreland has shared the first single & video from his forthcoming LP Long Winter Rodeo at No Depression, who praised it in saying that “fans of the late Jason Molina’s musical endeavors will find a familiarity in Westmoreland’s work…this is no-frills Americana of the highest order.”

The mind is the greatest escape. Chuck Westmoreland should know. Having already garnered acclaim from Noisey, the AV Club, & more with his eponymous 2016 debut, and having shared stages with the likes of Justin Townes Earle and Whitney Rose, Westmoreland is poised for a breakout with his forthcoming second album Long Winter Rodeo. Proud owner of a Portland, Ore., bar named The Red Fox, which he compares to the creepy watering holes of Twin Peaks, Westmoreland weaves his story songs from years of regulars shuffling through his doors, his characters drawing from a deep, personal well, while also pulling bits and pieces from his relationship with bar patrons with all the understanding of an old friend.

“He knows that there’s nowhere to go when you’re gone / There ain’t no direction,” Westmoreland sings with desolate beauty on Long Winter Rodeo’s title cut. Inspired by the real-life Tygh Ridge Rodeo Grounds (featured prominently in Westmoreland’s “Sharp Rocks” video), the sparse track unveils a simple love story. “A guy falls for this woman,” he says, “but she’s already with somebody else.” In an act of serendipity, the two finally end up together. Ultimately, it’s a hopeful tale, though one laced with an inescapable sadness. The song’s guitars ebb and flow beneath Westmoreland’s vocals, walking the line of solemnity and jubilee. “In the morning, you can see the outline of the rodeo, but it’s shrouded in mist—a lonely, desperate looking thing,” he says, detailing the colossal presence of the song’s Tygh Ridge backdrop. “When you drive by it after you’re done fishing, the fog is all burned off, and it turns into the most beautiful place you’ve ever seen. Every single mountain in Oregon is visible standing there in the arena.”

John Calvin Abney’s forthcoming LP Coyote receives “9 out of 10” from Americana UK

john calvin abney coyote

Girlfriend or girl-fiend? There are some excellent break-up albums around at the moment. Lilly Hiatt’s gorgeously rocking ‘Trinity Lane’ is written in blood and self-recrimination and now along comes Coyotefrom John Calvin Abney, who offers up the tattered remnants of his broken-heart. If you’re a fan of John Moreland, you will already be aware of Abney, Moreland’s dependable and extraordinary band member who plays guitar and keyboards, not to mention a gorgeous pedal-steel. They grew up together in Tulsa, Oklahoma and have each other’s backs. Abney will be in the UK in June when he will be hitting the road with John Moreland and before performing as a duo with Moreland each night, Abney will be playing a solo set.

This is Abney’s third album and listeners might be surprised by its mostly mellow style. Although Abney confesses to hanging out and being besties with “the kickers and the stompers,” and despite the fact that the album title Coyote is derived from the name Coyote Trigger, a nick-name for a shit-kicker that Moreland introduced him with, onstage one night; the bulk of the album is really laid back with a selection of songs that exemplify Abney’s sensitive, introspective side.

‘Always Enough’ is a track that wouldn’t surprise you, if found on an Andy Shauf album, or it turned out to be something Aimee Mann had written. The optimism and happy feel of the opening line “Pushing towards paradise on blacktop and tar,” has been fed through the meat-grinder by the time John reaches his sweetheart and the chorus and has received a kick to his cojones: “Prayers to ashes, promises to dust, one of these days we will learn to trust/ there’s no point in making it so tough/ can’t you see now, we were always in love?”  The lachrymose vibe is saved from being too maudlin by an uplifting piano trill and captivating guitar. This is pop music carved from the hardwood of experience. READ MORE…
