Sir Canyon Announces ‘Ventura Skies,’ Premieres “Golden Days”

Sir Canyon
Sir Canyon

LA-based songwriter Sir Canyon (Noah Lamberth), who previously played pedal steel with Katy Perry and shared stages with Willie, Dierks, Brad Paisley, and more, is gearing up for the release of his new project, Ventura Skies, on March 2nd.

Ventura Skies is an unexpected return from a songwriter who just a few years ago thought he might never make another album again, but a romantic breakup and the death of his father to cancer coaxed music out of Lamberth as he dealt with loss & hurt.“The best way to deal with the pain is to verbalize it. But for me that comes out in song. It’s kind of like therapy. The songs started pouring out of me.”

A cinematic album, Ventura Skies, transports the listener to the spacious landscapes of Southern California, inspired both by the location where the album was recorded as well as artists such as Glen Campbell, The Beach Boys, Gram Parsons, and Buck Owens.

Today, Sir Canyon shares one of the album’s tracks, “Golden Days,” which Lamberth says he began thirteen years ago with the intro/riff and some of the chords, and never finished until right before it was recorded last year, noting, “It’s funny how those old ideas can still work if you’re willing to give them another chance.”

A moody, contemplative folk-rock track drenched in reverb, pedal steel, and echoing baritone guitars, “Golden Days” merges the feel of a western with a lush, layered sonic landscape that nods to the past while being undeniably original – something Lamberth intended. “Believe it or not the intro/riff for Golden Days is very Radiohead influenced. The riff is the first thing I wrote for the song and it’s probably my attempt at trying to write something that sounds like them.  I wanted the rest of song to be kind of like a Glen Campbell song, with strings, Tele’s, and lush background vocals. Not sure if we were successful or not but we’re really happy with how the song turned out!”

The Vinyl District includes Beechwood in their new release roundup

This NYC trio (guitarist-vocalist Gordon Lawrence, drummer-vocalist Isa Tineo, and bassist Sid Simons) has apparently stirred up a ruckus in live performance, with the Gotham fuzz getting called and arrests made, and the scarf-worthy glam-psych-punk on display here fits the promo email’s description of the group as “an anti-social petty thief, a male hustler, and a delinquent runaway” quite well. But the songs here, a few of which are strong enough to initially strike the ear as covers, plus a solid umpteenth version of “I’m Not Like Everybody Else” (that enhances a mild KBD vibe), translate well from the safety of my couch. Essential 8: Ross Cooper

Ross Cooper
Ross Cooper

A former professional bareback rider, Ross Cooper was bustin’ broncs when his music career began. The now Nashville-based (via Lubbock, TX) artist’s new album, I Rode The Wild Horses, mixes country torch bearers with garage rockers grounded in solid storytelling and infused with glimmering pedal steel, rollicking riffs, and soulful keys. In advance of the album’s March 9th release, Cooper answered his Essential 8 and relayed the story behind his album’s title as well as some solid musical advice, his must have albums for the road, and more.

Did you have a musical mentor? If so, who was it and how did they influence you?
Honestly, my musical mentor is my mom.  She introduced me to music from her piano bench before I can remember, but it took root around the time I was 8 or 9.  I’ve taken a lot of lessons over the years and have gotten to play with some phenomenal musicians, but my mom has been there from day one. She can read music like nobody I know and she has great taste.

What’s the story behind your album’s title?
I Rode The Wild Horses – I wrote the song as an ode to the west Texas rodeo-cowboys that I grew up around.  Truly the last of a dying breed.  There are a lot of small towns around where I’m from, and a lot of them dry up, or the city grows around them.  It’s sad to see.  But then you have these old cowboys who are basically the last of the hardasses.  When everything else is changing around them, they don’t.  They’re revered and respected because they were something in their heyday, and unfortunately the majority of people around them have no idea.  I’ve always looked up to those types.  I knew instantly after I wrote the song that it would be the title track of the album.  No question.

Indie-pop duo Tiger March share new single “Either Or” at PopMatters

Tiger March‘s debut LP Hold Something may be destined to be one of the key synthpop/chillwave records of the year with sounds that summon fond memories of the Psychedelic Furs, Simple Minds and others that populated the soundtracks accompanying John Hughes films from the era. Albeit with a little more grit and darkness.

On the single, “Either Or”, husband and wife duo Matthew and Annie Gleason breeze their way through a romantic splash that’s undeniably infectious and sweetly memorable. With Annie’s laser-focused lyrics and vocals and Matthew’s shoegaze inspired instrumentation, it’s a number that makes you yearn for the endless nights that new love brings. READ MORE…

New Noise Magazine premieres Beechwood’s single, “I Know It’s Not Right”

“‘I Know It’s Not Right’ was done at a separate recording session about 7 or 8 months before the rest of the album was recorded. It was actually just myself alone with my producer, Matthew Marquardt. I wrote and recorded that song at a very difficult time in my life where it seemed like my whole world was completely falling apart. I was extremely unhealthy and put my body through a hell that I don’t wish upon anyone. It’s an extremely personal song of mine that was not originally intended for the public, but we needed a bonus track for the CD, and my friends pushed me to put it out and I’m happy now that the song is getting a proper release.

I can’t say what exactly influenced the arrangement on the song other than the fact that I just followed and trusted the instincts of my producer Matthew and myself. The instrumentation on any given song is dictated by the emotions that are let out through the song, and it’s our job to act as mediums for when the inspiration hits. Where that comes from I cannot say, but it’s there.”
