Earbuddy premieres “Phoenix” by DEGA

DEGA is the husband and wife duo of Kalen and Aslyn Nash. Both have prior experience to DEGA with Kalen involved with New West Records act Poderosa and Aslyn recording two prior albums and also serving as a touring keyboardist and backup singer for Kesha. As a duo, they create music that’s enchanting and dreamy. On February 23rd, they will release their self-titled debut through Lemonade Records. Today, we premiere the album track, “Phoenix”, a very personal song for the duo. Check out what they had to say about it and listen to the track below.

What does your relationship with this one feel like now, as compared to when you initially wrote the song?

Aslyn: My connection with ‘Phoenix’ feels just as strong now as it ever was. The song was initially inspired as we walked the streets of London one night at 2am and a red fox approached us in the streets. We were in Camden, not the English countryside, so it was quite an unusual sighting, at least for us.

Kalen: We took it as a good omen and attempted to follow the fox, but very quickly, he disappeared. Thoughts of his elusive nature are what began the idea for the song.

Aslyn: On a more personal note, later we learned that we were pregnant during that time. We unfortunately suddenly miscarried several months into the pregnancy, just as the excitement and wonder settled in. This song took upon that story for me. Just as the fox came and disappeared, so had this crushing experience.

How exactly does symbolism of the phoenix tie in, here?

Aslyn: I had to create a place in my mind and heart, a place of refuge, to reconcile the sorrowful experience and the feelings of loss. The story of the Phoenix finding renewal of life in the midst of death gave me release. Every time we play that song, I relive the presence and the absence felt amidst that time in our lives. Misty Boyce shares new single “Get Lost” at Earbuddy

misty boyce los angeles get lost

On February 16th, LA-based singer/songwriter Misty Boyce will release her third album, Get Lost. Misty Boyce has long been a sought-after keyboardist; backing such artists as Sara Bareilles, Sting, Ingrid Michaelson, and most recently touring with BØRNS. Her new album is an honest exploration of Boyce’s life, tackling everything from her Evangelical upbringing to her stepfather’s suicide. Today, we premiere the title track from the new album.

“Get the fuck off of your phone,” Boyce pleads on the outro of the title track, with its chilling organ stabs pulsing over a hypnotic and sparse backbeat. “Sometimes when I hear that lyric, I start to cry. I want it so badly. I want to get off my phone. I want other people to get off their phone. I want us all to stop judging each other by how our life looks on social media. I don’t want to be held to the impossible standards we put on ourselves.” READ MORE…

Earbuddy premieres Phantom Electric’s new single, “Friends”

Phantom Electric are set to introduce themselves via their debut digital 7? Friends on October 6th. Leading the project is the Atlanta-based multi-instrumentalist and producer Nick Whitson. Whitson has a fair share of past experience in Atlanta projects such as Elevation and Alchemy. Here, he brings in Daniel Draddy, Sean Michelson (Alchemy), Peter Norman (Spectralux), Matthew Pendrick (Slow Parade/Gas Hound) and Kristopher Sampson (Ponderosa). As Phantom Electric, they create music that soars instantly as evident by the anthemic six-minute “Friends”. But don’t just take our word for it. Listen to our premiere of the new song. Plus, check out what Whitson had to say about it below.

Nick Whitson on the new song:

In a failed attempt to move to New York City, I had just returned from Europe where I blew all my money. That was late August 2014. We were supposed to go on tour for a month, but that fell through the day before we were scheduled to leave town. Throughout that year, I really changed and grew a lot, on a personal and spiritual level. I made lots of poor decisions against my better judgment and left a lot of people and places behind. It was a lot of ‘taking back my life,’ and posturing. I was in need of reorienting myself and finding a new direction to lead.

Alone in a basement with an acoustic guitar, everything was weighing heavily on me. I was also thinking a lot about my relationships with friends. When I came back, it was like everyone was cool with me and glad I was back, but everyone had a chip on their shoulder about it or had issues to sort out amongst themselves. That’s where the chorus of “Friends” really stemmed from…’Oh my friend, what troubles you?’ There was a lot of backbiting going on at the time: pride, arrogance, deceit, manipulation, greed, self-righteousness—you can kind of pick up where I talk about those little ‘sins’ in the verses.

The song is a take on one’s character, looking in the mirror, recognizing and accepting your own responsibility and truth. I wanted to call out solipsism, and take time to address overcoming your own mind to become aware of all things around you and your impact and influence on others in life. READ MORE…

Earbuddy calls Voli’s new single, “Burn Everything” feat. Misun “an ecstatic, turbo-charged track that scorches the ground it travels on.”

Voli New Jersey-born, Los Angeles The Wall hip hop baby robot media

Voli isn’t exactly what you’d call a conventional hip hop artist. His new single, “Burn Everything”, pulled from his forthcoming LP The Wall features the much loved band Misun and together they turn up the heat for an ecstatic, turbo-charged track that scorches the ground it travels on. Get a listen to “Burn Everything” below.

While classic art-and-prog-rock elements appear on his new record The Wall, and he namechecks the legendary band Pink Floyd in his song “DNA”, the album’s title wasn’t inspired by the band. “It’s actually from a Will Smith interview I saw with Charlie Rose,” Voli explains. “As children, Will and his brother were tasked with building a wall for their father’s shop. At first, they were overwhelmed, but they continued to lay the bricks each day for almost two years. They finished it through dedication—one brick at a time.”

The Wall holds many shades of meaning for the Jersey-born (and now L.A.-based) Voli. In part, it’s about his journey as an artist, about growing slowly, carefully, and taking the time to build something that lasts. “I am creating a foundation for myself—musically, professionally, personally,” Voli says. “Each piece of ourselves is one brick in that wall. And it’s not always the easiest thing to hold it together, to find that mortar, to find that glue.” LISTEN HERE…

Lily and the Tigers prove that isolation can have very good effects on the music — even when you’re alone with friends.

There will always references and stories about the influence isolation can have on the creative process, most likely raking in references to albums that have stories of this nature embedded in their being. But when you’re part of a group, can you really be isolated in the truest sense of the word? Being away from all the hustle and bustle of city living is one thing, but can you still have that personal journey of reflection, etc, when you’re in the company of others? READ HERE…
