Immersive Atlanta

First Listen: Immersive Atlanta streams new EP from Quiet Hounds

Over the course of their previous five records, Quiet Hounds have remained a fairly mutable entity. Not changelings, mind you, able to slip in and out of entirely different skins, but adaptable enough to keep listeners off guard and on their toes. The band’s last LP, Characteristics of Living Things, was a pensive and wistful affair anchored by its shimmering centerpiece “Emperors.” That album found the group experimenting in varying degrees with new textures and atmospheres, but for the most part it remained rooted in the firm clay soil of Southern indie rock, folk, and Americana the quartet had been tilling for years.

With Everything Else is Noise, however, Quiet Hounds found themselves seeking out lush new terrain to sow. The seven-song effort is the group’s most pop-centric effort to date, a sprawling, radiant work that explores an array of varying sonic avenues. While for most bands adopting a greater pop presence simply means chasing down more anthemic hooks and brighter sounds, for Quiet Hounds the process meant rethinking their identity as a group and assuming greater risks.

When you consider the typical lifespan of even the most successful bands, a decade plus in the trenches is no small achievement. Atlanta’s Gringo Star have certainly made the most of the ten years that have passed since the group unveiled their debut LP All Y’all, resulting in a career that includes four additional albums, multiple national and overseas tours, and considerable critical accolades. VIDEO PREMIERE: ASTROKNOT – “NEVER LET GO” [FT. JADE DHOOGHE]
When we first featured rapper and producer Jake Otto McDonald, aka Astroknot, the conversation centered largely around McDonald’s bouts with drugs and depression, and how his immersion in music served as a ladder that allowed him to climb out of his pit of despair. Although filled with dark moments, his debut LP, Ground Control to Astroknot, turned out to be a dynamic and diverse record that takes time to celebrate the tough lessons and hard-fought victories he earned along the way. Indie/hip-hop artist Abhi the Nomad – interview @ Immersive Atlanta (10/9)

With over 8 million streams and counting of his debut LP Marbled, Abhi the Nomad, has only begun his journey as an artist, but he’s already something of a world traveller. Born in Madras, India, the emerging rapper lived in 8 cities before he was 18 years old, due to his father’s job. Although the constant movement allowed him to experience life in cultural hotbeds like Hong Kong and Beijing, it wasn’t until he secured a student visa to attend Cal Lutheran University in California that he found the stability he needed to begin pursuing his craft in earnest. Immersive Atlanta interviews rising Atlanta rapper/producer Astroknot

Colorful lives don’t always equate to meaningful music, but in the case of Jake Otto McDonald, better known as ATL producer and rapper Astroknot, the two are inextricably linked. A born performer, McDonald has been writing and recording music since he was 14, immersing himself in a broad range of music, from math rock and punk, to reggae and various forms of electronica. But as time went on and his musical proclivities began to sharpen, he found himself increasingly drawn to trap and hip-hop.

What follows next, and what is outlined only briefly in McDonald’s soliloquy below, is a long journey of self-discovery that winds through the halls of high school and college, through the murky corridors of the 9-5 corporate rat race, into a rabbit hole of copious psychedelic drugs, and down into a dark pit of traumatic depression. Immersive Atlanta Premieres Wanderwild’s “Day 31”

Matt Martin, aka Wanderwild, is preparing the release of his new LP, In Due Time, but the Athens artist and producer found the time to unveil one more single before the album officially drops tomorrow. “Day 31” is a pulsing, pop-inflected number that examines the potential for both majesty and melancholy in life’s banal repetition. The song’s methodical beat, combined with its rippling guitars and Martin’s soothing falsetto, places it on similar aesthetic grounds as his debut, Fleeting, but there’s also a confidence and ease here that was lacking from that first EP. Some of that, of course, is due to experience and practice, but to hear Martin tell it, it’s also about him coming to terms with his own purpose and intentions as an artist.

“Music for me is often about unpacking the relationship between cynicism and optimism and existential uncertainty,” he explains in the album’s press release. “It’s about finding personal balance through sound and texture and space.” READ MORE…
