The Vinyl District reviews Cheap Tissue’s first LP

Cheap Tissue, S/T (Lolipop) The first LP from Los Angelinos Cheap Tissue delivers solid dual-guitar ’70s punk action, which is appropriate as they’ve shared stages with The Vibrators, Zeros, and Slaughter & the Dogs. Pulling off this sorta thing across a full LP is a difficult trick, but these cats don’t falter, in large part because they rage a little harder did than most of their root influences, and get the job done in under 25 minutes. This makes for a pogoing good time, but they also keep a handle on the melodic thread, with a handful of these dozen cuts accurately described as catchy, a factor enhanced by occasional vocal harmonies amid the raw-throat roar. The Damned and Dead Boys comparisons aren’t off target, and if you need a record to help delay wearing out your copy of L.A.M.F., then step right up. A-

Americana UK Premieres Sir Canyon’s “Ventura Skies” (Independent, 2018)

For those not familiar with Sir Canyon, they are a collective of musicians fronted by former Hank Floyd member, Noah Lamberth. After his previous venture decided to call it quits after a series of high-profile support slots, Lamberth didn’t think he would continue with his music and pursued a brief career making documentaries and television shows however, after the loss of his father and a romantic breakup he began writing songs in his downtime, as a catharsis of sorts, and his friend and producer, Andy Davis encouraged him to record an album which (with the help of some former bandmates from his time in Katy Perry’s band) would eventually come to life as the mexican/surf/country record ‘Ventura Skies’.

On the record itself, whilst channeling the sounds of the LA/Laurel Canyon scene and without the pressure of any labels, Sir Canyon manage to achieve their own unique sound as they blends different styles of music and influences, seamlessly, which led the record to gain it’s own identity – a cinematic sound described by the group as “Cosmic Americana”.

The record begins with ‘Angeleno Daydream’, a song that begins with the familiar country sound of an acoustic guitar layered with an electric lead. Lamberth’s vocals have a certain laid-back delivery accented with reverb which add to the desert country sound of the track akin to Marty Stuart’s latest release, and conjure images of faraway places in the head of the listener..

Routes & Branches Premieres Great Peacock

Sometimes the better a band gets the more direct their music becomes. With increased confidence, there is less pressure to earn one’s stripes by dancing around a musical point. While Gran Pavo Real (Ropeadope, Mar 30) is only Great Peacock‘s second full-length, the collection reveals an evolution and a sure-footedness to the songs of Andrew Nelson and Blount Floyd.

2015’s Making Ghosts was one of my favorite records for that year. Songs like “Broken Hearted Fool” and the title track struck a perfect chord, working with an americana sound that was decidedly Southern and richly melodic. Those qualities are most readily on display with new tracks like “Hideaway” and “One Way Ticket”. The former features both some great guitar and a bit of classic organ thrown in for great measure. “Ticket” offers a quieter ride, built on a fine vocal and a memorable chorus: I’m a rolling stone / Yeah, I can’t sit still / I’m a one-way ticket, headed straight down hill / I’m a back row Baptist with stories to tell / Got a one-way ticket to keep me out of hell. This is classic Southern americana, very well played and as praiseworthy as anything else that’s been released this year.

Even while striking these familiar notes, Gran Pavo Real finds the Nashville quartet embracing more of the region’s blues and gospel influence. “Heartbreak Comin’ Down” is a piano-driven blues number, with a blazing Blount Floyd guitar solo. “Rattlesnake” adds a rocking swagger, punctuated by bursts of guitar and a soaring chorus. Both “Take Me Down” and “Oh Deep Water” are darker, gospel tinged tracks.

No Depression Premieres Leslie Tom’s “Are You Ready for Some Hanky Panky?”

A ten-track reflection of Leslie Tom’s own journey intertwined with Hank Williams-inspired tales of addiction, love, heartache, and loss, can be found on the songstress’ new album, Ain’t It Something, Hank Williams, due March 23rd.

Recorded at Nashville’s Cinderella Sound Studios, produced by John Macy (Los Lobos, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band) and featuring all-star players like Lloyd Green (pedal steel), Andy Hall (dobro on the somber “Angel of Death”), Walter Hartman (drums), Joe Reed (bass), and more, the record contains a healthy mix of Hank covers and Hank-inspired originals, some, such as “Are You Ready for Some Hanky Panky?” even stemming from seemingly ordinary conversation.

Tom relays the story behind the song, “Contrary to the song title, it’s NOT about sex. This is a tongue and cheek song about the life of Hank Williams that I’m very, very proud to have written with Dean Miller. The song idea came from my husband, who is amazing in a million ways but god-bless-him, does not have a creative bone in his body. While at a CD release party for a fellow Denver honky tonker, I casually mentioned to my girlfriend I needed to come up with a catchy phrase to put on a t-shirt and would love for the phrase to be about Hank Williams. Without skipping a beat, my husband turned, looked me dead in the eye and said, “Why don’t you get a shirt that says, ‘Are you ready for some Hanky Panky?’.” After I picked my jaw up off the floor (because the idea was not only creative but brilliant), I said to him…”

Woop announces return from prison, I Still DGAF Tour 2018 at XXL Mag

Orlando, Fla. rapper Woop was just starting to gain some major steam when he had a life-changing setback in 2016. That year, a 2010 charge of “shooting/throwing a missile at a building or vehicle” landed the “Go Away” spitta in jail with a two-year sentence on April 26, 2016. Now, with his time served and behind him, the rapper is getting back to his career and is currently on tour.

Woop, born Charles Ford, was released back into society on Feb. 15, and has made quick work of putting things back in order. He hit the road on his I Still DGAF Tour on Friday (March 2), a mostly Florida-based jaunt that will see him touch down in 10 cities in March, April and May.

Woop is hoping the time away helped form his craft. “Jail was the first time I really started to write,” he says. “I can tell more of a story now, can tell people what I’m going through. Put people in my shoes who have been here before, and who haven’t been here before—I can give them my life story.” READ MORE…

In Their Words: “‘Rattlesnake,’ put simply, is about addiction, The ‘rattlesnake, lion, and apple’ is the demon that one wrestles, whatever it may be. You can feel helpless in the situation.

This song has one of my favorite lyric passages we’ve ever had — the second verse starts with ‘There is a Lion, lyin’ ’round, lying through his teeth,’ the alliteration and how it rolls out, kind of like a tongue twister … I just fell in love with. Recording wise, the bass line that Tom [Blankenship from My Morning Jacket] came up with just floored me. It’s so him but on one of our songs.
