Punchy synths reminiscent of 80s California blend with laid back vocals to create a refreshing atmosphere in DEGA’s latest single, “Mirrors.” The track is invigorating, warming away the winter chill, motivating the listener with every groove. DEGA is comprised of husband-wife duo Kalen and Aslyn Nash, who met in 2008 and married in 2011. They’ve already toured with some incredible musicians, including a 2017 tour with Washed Out. Abhi The Nomad breaks down his new album Marbled at Consequence of Sound

abhi-the-nomad-marbled-austin-tx-los-angeles

Abhi the Nomad may be based in Austin, Texas, but there’s a reason for the moniker he chose. Born in Madras, India, the young indie MC moved eight times before he was 18. Even once he thought he was settled in Thousand Oaks, California, immigration laws forced him to move back to India. He managed to relocate to Lille, France before finally getting a second student visa to attend grad school in the US.

Through all that movement, there was only one thing Abhi could hold on to for stability: his music. After all, the best way he could achieve a more permanent relocation to the US would be through a talent visa. With that goal in mind, he’s collected all the songs he’s recorded over his nomadic years into his latest album, Marbled. READ MORE…

Essential 8: R. Finn

R. Finn
R. Finn

Following a two-year stint working with The Band’s Levon Helm at his studio in Woodstock recording the famous Midnight Rambles, R. Finn returned to Los Angeles and started his own recording studio and creative space, The Heritage Recording Co. It was in that studio that Finn recorded his debut LP, Collecting Trip—a ten-track collection of timeless Americana that finds the singer-songwriter channeling influences from Woody Guthrie to Leon Russell. Co-produced by legendary drummer Jim Keltner (Bob Dylan, Neil Young, John Lennon), Collecting Trip is an ode to the singer-songwriter’s (nee Chris Rondinella) deep dive into folk and Americana and features contributions from Benmont Tench (Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers), Sean & Sara Watkins (Nickel Creek), and more. Recently, Finn answered his Essential 8 and talked about the story behind his album’s title, musical mentors, meeting Dylan, and more.

Did you have a musical mentor? If so, who was it and how did they influence you?
Absolutely, Levon Helm and Jim Keltner! When I met Lee I lived on a steady diet of 60’s Rock And Roll. I was on the threshold of folk and the blues, but not quite ready for it. He took me back to the roots of early American music, and I still haven’t recovered. In addition, I was so young and green at the time I lacked not only experience but confidence too. His kindness helped me to believe in myself. He was a great teacher and friend. I met Jim around the same time. Though I’ve written songs since I was a kid, I’d lost the interest and courage to perform them for anyone. He helped me to find my voice. He is a craftsman and a true genius. I felt like I improved in every category just by being around him.

SONG PREMIERE: Kellen of Troy will “Rule Your Heart” on lush new track

Kellen of Troy
Kellen of Troy

Once a fiddler with Apache Relay, multi-instrumentalist Kellen Wenrich begins his solo career as Kellen of Troy with his debut LP, Posthumous Release(out February 16th). The upcoming release finds the singer-songwriter mellow, focused, and rich with realization in songs where blissful folk melodies are juxtaposed with reflective, vulnerable, and somber lyrics that pull from the personal and professional.

Today, Kellen of Troy shares the new song, “Rule Your Heart,” a cleverly crafted indie-pop gem with a spacious melody that floats alongside Wenrich’s honest, endearing vocals. Wenrich, who is happily married, says the song is “about my beautiful, brilliant, compassionate, talented, bad-ass wife and how I don’t really care about what anybody thinks of me besides her. Also, how I don’t really care to do or be anything else besides her husband.” Adding, “Full-disclosure, she is sitting next to me right now, but that in no way has influenced my answer.”

Wenrich further details the story behind the tune,“I first wrote, “Rule Your Heart” while on a bit of a bender in the UK. The original lyrics were a self-deprecating take on partying too much, and they were terrible. I quickly scrapped them and forgot about the tune. A couple months later a friend brought her friend over to my house for a belated birthday party. The friend of a friend and I quickly fell in love, and she’s now my afore-mentioned wife. During our courtship, I remembered that terribly worded yet catchy melody I wrote overseas and reconstructed it as a love song.”

SONG PREMIERE: Charlie Overbey’s “OUTLAWS”

Charlie Overbey
Charlie Overbey

C&I has an exclusive first listen to country-rocker Charlie Overbey’s newest track, “Outlaws,” off of his upcoming Broken Arrow album.

If you like honky-tonk country music from artists like Johnny Cash, then this new track from multitalented country rock ’n’ roller Charlie Overbey is for you. Driven by a pedal steel, bluesy guitar riffs, and lyrics about the passing of outlaw great Waylon Jennings, the song “Outlaws” is country folk rock that packs a gritty emotional punch.

“‘Outlaws’ is derived from my thoughts and haunting realizations about losing so many of the great talents and artists of our time,” Overbey says. “It’s a song about dreaming big and creating magic. It’s a song of hope. It’s a song about keeping our late musical heroes close to the heart and having faith in new artists to carry the torch for generations to come. It’s about those of us who refuse to buy into the concept of being part of the herd, and the spirit of ‘Waylon’s Way’ taking the wheel, so to speak.”

Overbey, who also designs custom cowboy hats with his company, Lone Hawk, is a California rocker with a flair for the Western lifestyle. Witness the panache with which he pulls off wearing his distinctive vintage-inspired hats.

“Outlaws” also features a stunning performance by the Mastersons, who play backup for the legendary Steve Earle. The track is a fantastic preview of Overbey’s upcoming album, Broken Arrow, a compilation of songs from a man who has been through hard times and come away wiser.

Song Premiere: Leslie Tom’s Swinging ‘Hey Good Lookin’”

Leslie Tom
Leslie Tom

You’d be hard-pressed to find a traditional country singer who hasn’t been influenced by Hank Williams, but few modern traditionalists have taken the lyrics and legacy of Williams’ to heart as deeply as Leslie Tom. Tom has been a disciple of Williams since she was a child. She says the singer has shaped nearly every aspect of her career.

“I honestly do not remember a time I was not aware of Hank Williams,” Tom tells Wide Open Country. “I was introduced to music through my father on our 90-minute drives from my mom’s house to his house every other Friday evening. During those drives, the only music he played was traditional country. Hank Williams was one of the first, if not the first, artists I heard as a child. His impact on my music goes back to his influence from my birth.”
Today, Wide Open Country is proud to premiere Tom’s spin on “Hey Good Lookin’,” which Williams wrote and recorded in 1951. The song has been covered by dozens of artists over the years, but Tom’s Texas swing take on the track makes the classic sound as fresh as ever.

Tom says she was initially nervous to record with the industry legends, but the musicians’ excitement for the project put her at ease.

“My relationship with Nashville at that time was still not in a positive place so the last thing I wanted was to walk into a studio and be judged by a bunch of musicians that play and have played with the stars.  My experience with all of them, but most specifically Lloyd, was quite the opposite,” Tom says.  “There was excitement about the record because I write and play the music that they ‘grew up’ playing and loving.”
“Over the past two years, my relationship with Lloyd has grown into a very close friendship and I can tell you I love that man with all of my heart,” Tom continues. “During our session working on this album, he gave me a steel lesson on his guitar. That was about as nerve-racking as anything I’ve done in my life. But in true Lloyd Green form, he was a true gentleman. It’s an honor to have him play with me and I’ll be forever thankful.”
Ain’t It Something, Hank Williams is out March 23 on Coastal Bend Music.
