New Noise Magazine talks to Count Vaseline about depression & more

The experimental psychedelic pop project, Count Vaseline—helmed by Irish vocalist and instrumentalist Stefan “The Count” Murphy and Judas von Basf, his trusty tape machine—first manifested in May of 2016 in Berlin, Germany. Several months later, in September, the project birthed its debut full-length album, Yo No Soy Marinero. Now located in Atlanta, Georgia, The Count released his sophomore follow-up, Cascade, on March 31—an album Murphy refers to as a “micro-universe of record.”

Are there any personal experiences with mental health issues you’d like to share?

I’ve battled with depression most of my life. Not for as long as I can remember, but certainly since my early teens. It has made my life a hellish nightmare at times. Right now, I’m on top of it, but it’s stifled my work, my relationship with bandmates, and my relationship with those closest to me.

How does your mental health status interact with or inform the way you make music?

The wild fluctuation of my mood and the emotional Ferris wheel that it takes me on can render me incapable of making music sometimes, and then at other times, it can shift me into top gear. I have never been diagnosed with bipolar disorder [or] manic depression, but I do experience pretty violent fluctuations in my mood. When I’m down, I can get nothing done, so I use the periods when I’m “up” to my advantage. Though I know the feeling is not healthy and not really to be trusted, when I’m experiencing mania, I’m really dialed in to what I need to be doing. My songwriting flourishes, my organizational skills are on point, and my general work rate exceeds expectations… READ MORE

PopMatters premieres Moonsville Collective’s “LA County Line”

Moonsville Collective

Back in 2015, Adrien Begrand described Moonsville Collective as having “undeniable chemistry to create rustic Americana that’s made to be heard in person, where the beer is flowing & the energy is palpable.” This much is still evident on their latest single, “LA County Line”.

On top of this, though, they’ve made some clear strides towards new sonic paths predating the release of their new EP, Moonsville II, as well. They bring things into a more modern soundscape this time around, focusing on smooth harmonies and consummate instrumentation married by a broader production.

The tune finds a sonic space tucked comfortably between artists like Old Crow Medicine Show while enjoying both the classic sentiment and more recent pop stylings of Avett Brothers balladry. It’s a relaxed, captivating alt-country song about finding your place outside of the bustle of city life and enjoying it… READ MORE

Bern Kelly shares new single with Glide Magazine, announces new LP

If there’s one constant rule in Nashville, where musical trends come and go each year, it’s that there’s nothing more important than the song. That’s the guiding principle of Bern Kelly’s new album, Lost Films, a record that deploys a sweeping array of styles, from power-pop to plaintive folk & reverb-washed Americana, all in service of that eternal truism: The song comes first.

Recorded with an array of the town’s brightest studio pros, including producer Patrick Damphier (The Arcs, Tim Easton, TheMynabirds), steel-guitar legend Russ Pahl (Dan Auerbach, Patty Griffin, Miranda Lambert), drummer Jon Radford (Steelism, Lily Hiatt, Leigh Nash) and bassist Travis Vance, Kelly’s latest record is a community-minded effort, the result of his decade-long tenure as a singer/songwriter in Nashville.

Kelly’s influences come through loud and clear on Lost Films’ ten songs, from the gruff Josh Ritter & Bruce Springsteen-channeling album opener “Unsold” to his gorgeous country-folk duet with Thirty Tigers artist Elise Davis on “Garage Sale,” a tune that recalls Ryan Adams’ Whiskeytown-era duets with Caitlin Cary. It’s an eclectic album, shifting from swooping Marshall Crenshaw guitar hooks to Mark Kozelek-inspired gothic-noir sketches. Elsewhere, Kelly draws from Jeff Buckley and Elliott Smith—in particular, the dreamy, introspective ballad “Forever Alone”—and he stretches out on the exploratory “Madeline Street,” a meandering, seven-minute epic that Kelly considers one of the proudest moments of his recording career… READ MORE

The Huffington Post debuts PLS PLS’ “Jet Black” video

After 10 years, six albums, and over 1,000 shows with his former band, Dropsonic, Dan Dixon decided it was time to re-invent the wheel he’d spinning for so long. Though Dropsonic had done too many tours to count, and had shared bills with bands such as And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead, Garbage, Archers of Loaf and The Strokes, it had all started to feel decidedly uninspiring. But this changed when Dixon launched PLS PLS back in 2012. Eschewing guitars for a parade of sparkling keyboards and synthesizers, the new project became the vehicle for his creative renaissance.

PLS PLS’ recently released sophomore effort, Jet Black, continues this journey, ending up at the crossroads where dark New Wave & electronic groups like New Order and Kraftwerk intersect with the swirling, anthemic synth-pop of M83 and Twin Shadow. PLS PLS combines jarring electronic textures with arena-friendly hooks, club-ready beats, and a flair for blending analog and digital soundscapes into a forceful wall of sound.

The album’s title track is a dreamy, space-rock cut that is both hook-heavy and minimalist. “It’s a song about loving someone or something that’s metaphorically—or literally—killing you,” Dixon explains. “So much so, that you can’t stop regardless of the consequences.” Though Dixon is quick to point out that his lyrics are more thematic than specifc. “My songs are almost never about one particular event. They’re about a feeling or an experience that’s ultimately a part of the human condition—just from my perspective.” READ MORE

Popdust premieres PopHeart’s “Kuyama Drama”

The inexorable weight of tragedy hung around the Los Angeles punk scene like a thick ghostly mist. And the exact truth surrounding the fatal shooting of Peter Haskell, musician and actor with a wellspring of troubled notions, is murky, at best. Shooter Bruce Kalberg, who had known Haskell for the better part of 30+ years, claimed it was self defense when Haskell allegedly broke into his apartment and spewed a barrage of threats. The District Attorney declined to file charges, and the story stopped there. But in reality, it was only just beginning.

The world of his son Paris Yavuz, from whom he was mostly estranged, shifted dramatically. Medicine’s Beth Thompson, also a close friend of Haskell, unloaded his father’s music equipment at Yavuz’s apartament soon after–and the story took on a new life. Yavuz, who goes by the stage name Popheart, poured his yearning soul into his music. That’s when 2014’s More Me Less You EP came into the picture, a sinister, new wave collection of deeply-rooted stories of the human existence (with a penchant for large hooks and smokey, jittery arrangements).

Now, the singer, songwriter and musician eyes his follow up, jumpstarted with the brooding “Kuyama Drama,” a more adorned darkwave-produced escape with blurred vocals and a sticky core. “[This song] is an emotional recount of the last experience and verbal exchange I shared with a close friend who has passed,” he tells Popdust about the song, premiering exclusively today. “It’s dark, but I didn’t want it to sound that way. I had been listening to New Order’s ‘Bizarre Love Triangle’ almost exclusively when we were recording this track.” READ MORE
