Huffington Post debuts Wanderwild’s “Evergreens” video

Wanderwild’s spacey, reverb-washed debut EP, Fleeting, is an expansive and sweeping collection of indie pop, rock and folk that recalls the tender melodic brilliance of Feist and Bon Iver, while evoking the moody immediacy of bands like Deerhunter and The National. This captivating, densely layered project is the work of multi-instrumentalist Matt Martin, who, with just a few exceptions, is Wanderwild’s sole contributor.

When the Athens, Ga.-based Martin began considering a video for new single “Evergreens,” one of the highlights of Fleeting, he and his friends from Georgia-based film collective The Wily Breed—Gabe Cuomo, Sean Bradley, and Trevor Blesse—ventured to the Seattle, Wash., wilderness. The stunning visuals for “Evergreens” not only mirror the anthemic nature of the song, but are reflective of Martin’s personal struggles, as well. “Evergreens is a song about internal strife,” he says. “It’s a conversation with myself, as I try to sift through anxiety and uncertainty. I’m battling cynicism with the wisdom that comes from knowing the universe is far bigger than myself.”

Wily Breed member (and longtime Martin friend) Cuomo signed on as director, producer and editor on “Evergreens,” approaching Martin’s ideas with what he calls “passionate idealism.” Cuomo and his team spent hours scaling the rugged wilderness of Washington state—wrestling the topographical limitations of their surroundings while sunburned, dehydrated and freezing cold. Consequence of Sound streams new single from Jet Trash

With their 2015 self-titled debut EP, garage rockers Jet Trash drew comparisons to the likes of Ty Segall and FIDLAR. For their follow-up, dubbed Shake, the Los Angeles-based outfit will continue to be guided body and mind by the same raw rock ‘n’ roll spirit — except they’re taking it to the next level. Think the Ramones’ iconic first album.

“We want to make people feel something direct, tapping into their more base emotions,” singer/bassist Marshall Fassino tells Consequence of Sound. “We’re big proponents of the idea that simple, passionately played music can be just as powerful as something intricate and carefully arranged. We tend toward the more immediate and accessible. Something with no frills — just a good chord progression, a good melody and a strong backbeat.”

Much of the unfiltered intensity found on Shake is meant to mirror Jet Trash’s often intense concerts. “There are no synths, no drum machines, no slick production and no bullshit,” singer/guitarist Paul Kemp adds. “We set out to make a record that captures the raw feel of our live show, and I think we accomplished that.” READ MORE

New Noise Magazine talks to Count Vaseline about depression & more

The experimental psychedelic pop project, Count Vaseline—helmed by Irish vocalist and instrumentalist Stefan “The Count” Murphy and Judas von Basf, his trusty tape machine—first manifested in May of 2016 in Berlin, Germany. Several months later, in September, the project birthed its debut full-length album, Yo No Soy Marinero. Now located in Atlanta, Georgia, The Count released his sophomore follow-up, Cascade, on March 31—an album Murphy refers to as a “micro-universe of record.”

Are there any personal experiences with mental health issues you’d like to share?

I’ve battled with depression most of my life. Not for as long as I can remember, but certainly since my early teens. It has made my life a hellish nightmare at times. Right now, I’m on top of it, but it’s stifled my work, my relationship with bandmates, and my relationship with those closest to me.

How does your mental health status interact with or inform the way you make music?

The wild fluctuation of my mood and the emotional Ferris wheel that it takes me on can render me incapable of making music sometimes, and then at other times, it can shift me into top gear. I have never been diagnosed with bipolar disorder [or] manic depression, but I do experience pretty violent fluctuations in my mood. When I’m down, I can get nothing done, so I use the periods when I’m “up” to my advantage. Though I know the feeling is not healthy and not really to be trusted, when I’m experiencing mania, I’m really dialed in to what I need to be doing. My songwriting flourishes, my organizational skills are on point, and my general work rate exceeds expectations… READ MORE

Bern Kelly shares new single with Glide Magazine, announces new LP

If there’s one constant rule in Nashville, where musical trends come and go each year, it’s that there’s nothing more important than the song. That’s the guiding principle of Bern Kelly’s new album, Lost Films, a record that deploys a sweeping array of styles, from power-pop to plaintive folk & reverb-washed Americana, all in service of that eternal truism: The song comes first.

Recorded with an array of the town’s brightest studio pros, including producer Patrick Damphier (The Arcs, Tim Easton, TheMynabirds), steel-guitar legend Russ Pahl (Dan Auerbach, Patty Griffin, Miranda Lambert), drummer Jon Radford (Steelism, Lily Hiatt, Leigh Nash) and bassist Travis Vance, Kelly’s latest record is a community-minded effort, the result of his decade-long tenure as a singer/songwriter in Nashville.

The Huffington Post debuts PLS PLS’ “Jet Black” video

After 10 years, six albums, and over 1,000 shows with his former band, Dropsonic, Dan Dixon decided it was time to re-invent the wheel he’d spinning for so long. Though Dropsonic had done too many tours to count, and had shared bills with bands such as And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead, Garbage, Archers of Loaf and The Strokes, it had all started to feel decidedly uninspiring. But this changed when Dixon launched PLS PLS back in 2012. Eschewing guitars for a parade of sparkling keyboards and synthesizers, the new project became the vehicle for his creative renaissance.

PLS PLS’ recently released sophomore effort, Jet Black, continues this journey, ending up at the crossroads where dark New Wave & electronic groups like New Order and Kraftwerk intersect with the swirling, anthemic synth-pop of M83 and Twin Shadow. PLS PLS combines jarring electronic textures with arena-friendly hooks, club-ready beats, and a flair for blending analog and digital soundscapes into a forceful wall of sound.

The album’s title track is a dreamy, space-rock cut that is both hook-heavy and minimalist. “It’s a song about loving someone or something that’s metaphorically—or literally—killing you,” Dixon explains. “So much so, that you can’t stop regardless of the consequences.” Though Dixon is quick to point out that his lyrics are more thematic than specifc. “My songs are almost never about one particular event.
