Noisey gives Becky Warren’s new album War Surplus an A-

Becky Warren War Surplus ptsd nashville

Becky Warren: War Surplus (self-released) Warren is a singer-songwriter who put her music on hold in 2006, when her new husband came back from Iraq with PTSD. The marriage didn’t survive, but they gave it a hard try, and years later Warren’s solo debut, a muscular, bro-country sounding concept album where she sings five “June” songs and seven “Scott” songs, is born of that effort. June’s a dive bar sweetheart whose love for her man is ironwood strong, Scott a casual patriot looking to escape the day-to-day who comes home with a mouth that explodes whenever he pulls the pin. Scott’s memories of the girl who loved him best are painful. But they have nothing on the Iraq memories of “Stay Calm, Get Low,” borrowed from memoirist Colby Buzzell, who liked Warren’s adaptation so much he wrote liner notes. A MINUS   READ MORE…

The Huffington Post debuts new video, “Thieves” from Thayer Sarrano

On her latest release, Shaky, Thayer Sarrano forges her own path into a Southern-psych dreamland, bottling up ghosts and bringing them to life through her ethereal hymns. The Athens, GA-based artist—who has recorded & toured with a host of notable bands including Cracker, Camper Van Beethoven, Dead Confederate, Of Montreal and Drive-By Truckers—cut the entire album in just one day while at home in her living room. The result is as a potent examination of grace and perseverance amidst loss and melancholia. Read More…

Tsutro shares full album stream with The Wild Honey Pie

Taking an unflinching step away from the folk-leanings of his other project, Branches, Jacob Montague is making his electro return as Tsutro, combining the emotional sensibilities of his previous genre with the audacious beats and layers you’d expect from a left-of-center pop project. PunkNews.org reviews TRASHCLUB’s debut album Black Out

TRASHCLUB black out los angeles atlanta position music

For all the twists and turns rock has taken in different directions (remember that 60s period when every cool band went country?), there are always bands that try to wrestle it back into the direction of American primitivism, of people in garages singing songs about getting fucked up and searching for…well something. A lover, sex, the next bottle of booze, a transcendent high, who knows? Trashclub is happy to be one of those bands, gleeful in their bashing garage pop aspirations. They write simple songs about bathing in the rock n’ roll fantasy all next to some big hooks to keep you happy.

And mission accomplished by the twosome here, whether it’s “Rock n’ Roll Daydream”, which rips off a good five or six classics backed by the “Sweet Jane” riff or the triumphant “Wanna Wanna”. Trashclub’s songs are a mix of garage, post-punk, and disco, the basic feel of the songs elevated a little by washes of reverb on the vocals and tambourine. They sound like if the Black Keys were just a little more danceable and excited – the opener “Black Out” is the best song here, a surfy rocker that’s tight and fun as hell in its urgency and souped up motor sound. Flavorwire premieres Honus Honus’ video for “Will You?” (Feat. Pauly Shore)

Honus Honus will you use your delusion pauly shore video Yumi

Honus Honus is perhaps best known as the frontman for the similarly alliterative Philadelphia-based experimentalists Man Man, but with the release of his debut solo record, Use Your Delusion, in 2016, he’s also a solo artist. The album — founded via PledgeMusic — is a fascinating, dramatic piece of work: less manic than Man Man, perhaps, but no less theatrical than his “main” project. We’re delighted to premiere the video for new single “Will You?”, which features Pauly Shore as a washed-up TV actor. We find him backstage on the set of some unspecified Japanese TV show, and watch as he hits forlornly on his make-up artist, and then stares silently into a mirror — as Honus sings, “Will you blow your brains out on a Sunday?/ Or will you slag it off until the moon goes down and do it Monday?” It’s a short, unsettling piece that captures the mood of the album all too well. WATCH HERE…
